Public libraries aren't for you. That doesn't mean that they aren't for everyone.
My friends and I are all variations on self employed, we spend a lot of our time leeching the free wireless at my public library because the environment is much nicer than our homes. Now, we'd be happy with the public study and discussion space that you mention.
However, around us are people who are using the library and they are very much using it traditionally. There is archive material here that's never been digitized (and may not, depending on the resources and laws in place to facilitate or prevent the transferral). There are immigrants and lower income people who don't have or can't have Internet access at home, or a personal library of books and magazines. These people still need access to information (a lot of them need it more desperately than me, I'm reading Slashdot, they are getting information on how to find a job in a new country).
All too often on Slashdot people post responses to articles along the lines of your comment "well *I* don't see the need for that so I can't see how anyone would need it". But Slashdot readers are not the majority (not even a large minority) of people.
So we're looking for a blind 17 year old named Matthew W. in Boston.
Oh and at then end of it "This article has been modified to remove the surname of Matt's mother, following a complaint from Matt that she might face harassment from his party line enemies."
You got it wrong man, evolutionarily speaking, it doesn't matter how long you live, just how many kids you have (who live to have kids).
So long as Rock Stars and other artsy types keep fucking dozens and dozens of partners like wild cats before they die at a young age, there will be plenty more of them.
There is a significant difference between DVD and HD when you have the right equipment.
Err you just supported his argument, which is that HD might be nicer for people who have HD TVs most people don't have HD TVs and that beyond the HD nicer picture there is no compelling reason to upgrade. Sure, with the right equipment you don't ever want to go back. But most people don't have that yet.
I think that your first problem is having a relationship where you think you need to win. Winning is for debates, not for sorting out your love life. Take this for what it's worth from a former debater who had to go through several relationship before I worked out the difference.
So does Eve have a virtual police and virtual jails to simulate the virtual results of committing virtual crimes?
If not, then how exactly are they simulating real life
They aren't simulating real life. They are simulating life in the far reaches of space on the edges of a war-torn civilization caught up in a centuries long cold war. As other commenters have noted, in the world of Eve there are systems for declaring war on enemies and being able to hunt them down and take retribution.
Now, Second Life may not have intended for there to be scamming and piracy or whatever as part of the game world, so there may be a case to be made there for outside legal enforcement, but I cringe every time people start talking about applying real world laws to game worlds.
The WHOLE POINT of games is that they let you live out a fantasy life, and simulate different (and even nefarious) activities. We don't prosecute Quake players for murder or ship Counter Strike players to Guatanamo. Likewise, if the developers have intentionally created a virtual world that allows theft and piracy and scams as part of the gameplay, the police should not be called in when players play the game as intended.
Vetting software before release to make sure it's clean has to be done for both open and closed source software. Companies do it every day. It's no big deal.
Hi, I work in the industry. I happen to have been at work for 12 hours today because we had two deadlines on two projects at the same time and I needed to supervise both teams, and ensure that we got the drops off so that there'd be no question of publishers pressuring us to work over the holidays.
After careful consideration, I have decided not to spend another hour or two today vetting throw-away prototypes for ideas we might want to keep private, unlicensed code, place-holder assets and code from previous projects in order to give them away to people. Hope you understand.
You're... not just in it for accolades, prizes, and free swag, right? Not for interview time to push an agenda, right? You did it because you had a message to get out.
Err, having an agenda IS having a message to get out.
Please note. You are exactly one of the *philes that the grandparent talks about.
While you complain that you don't have a 70mm projectors in your living room, the rest of us are having friends over to watch movins on our tiny TVs with RCA connections to the DVD player.
Yeah, like the stock market, only for all the people involved, not only the uneducated who decide to buy stock because it has grown 30 percent last month or because their barber told them to.
Keep in mind that I'm not talking about all Windows users. Some people have a legitimate reason to use Windows. GAMES. That's right it has games. That's the biggest selling point I've heard so far. Most of these gamers have a Wii, an Xbox360, and a PS3. Hey here's a thought. Play games on your consoles, and stop using that as a reason for using Windows.
So, what happens when someone introduces the Gnutella of MMORPGs ?
It would mean the end of the industry, not because MMORPGs themselves became unpopular, but because the model of monthly fees would be unmaintainable - you don't need a central server to play, so you don't need to pay anyone to run one either.
What, do you work for the RIAA? Gnutella didn't kill the music industry and this magic new game that you dreamed of won't kill MMOs.
Phase 1: Cally opens up EIB and does an IPO on it. Many people get excited, lots of people invest, lots more people begin to store saving there. Phase 2: Cally builds reputation and Bank starts to seem like one of the cornerstones of Eve's burgeoning investment market. To this day it's not clear how much of that was legitimate and how much was pyramid goodness. Phase 3: A character named Currin Trading runs a scam and makes off with 30 billion ISK (the largest scam ever at the time) Phase 4: Word gets out that Currin Trading was a scam, Currin Trading posts a very long explanation of the whole scam and ends it with another shocking revelation: EIB is also a scam! He recognizes all the signs because it's so much like his own scam. Phase 5: Forum drama. Phase 6: Insane forum drama. Phase 7: Cally's faked a) hospitalization, b) incarceration c) death in very short sequence. Phase 8: EIB is revelaed to be a scam, Dentara Rast is revelaed to be Cally's main (players can have up to three character per account) much gloating occurs. He puts a billion ISK bounty on his own head and goes out to fly PVP with the most expensive ships and equipment he can find (in Eve, if your ship blows up you lose it entirely). Phase 9: Slashdot!
It should be noted that scams are an accepted part of the Eve game mechanics. Eve is ruthelessly PvP in combat and in the marketplace. It seems as though this was an entirely legitimate (in an EULA sense of the word) scam and that Dentara Rast will get off free and clear.
Sony has stated before they want the console to last ten years, so you'll not see a new console with a new format before then.
The PSone lasted ten years in the sense that they were still selling it (and are still selling it?) 10 years after the 1st Playstation became available and at the same time that the PS2 was also in stores. I'm sure that the PS2 err PStwo will still be selling 5 years from now in stores and that when the PS4 comes out, they will still be selling the PSthree.
The PS3 may be "futureproof" but I promise you that it's not futureproof enough to compete with whatever Nintendo and Microsoft will build and release 4-7 years from now.

Well done guys!
Besides Ms. Pac-Man, game like Tetris and Baldur's Gate assist these programs in mapping different behaviors onto their artificial test subjects
BALDUR'S GATE?!

Well, according to this series of articles on Wired, you guys will win the space war.
So, uh. All clear?

THERE's the backlash.
Hello Backlash, we've been waiting for you!
As nice as it is to hear from RedOctane, I'd rather hear the fully skinny from Harmonix.

No.
It's news because certain Wikipedia articles are STILL getting vandalized despite the fact that Wikipedia vandalism was solved.
