It would be great to simply rent the game for the eve allowing everyone to play.

I have a hard time buying that RFID info was abused in any of those cases. Should people be allowed to do things illegal for the sake of privacy? Theres a reason why laws exist. If your breaking one, you're most likely causing harm to others. You should be caught.

Holding the method used to convict you responsible for that conviction is foolish. You shouldn't be commiting the crime in the first place. I know everyone breaks the law from time to time... a little weed, speeding, running a red light, cheating on taxes, screwing the neighbors goat while wearing your girlfriends nighty and singing the hee haw theme full voice(just me?). But when you get caught, its you own damn fault.

This type of evidence, I feel, is about the same as using DNA. What if you were robbed, and a conviction could be made based only on DNA evidence. Would you opt to drop the case in order to protect the purps privacy? How about RFID evidence? How bout a rape case?

First, its not learned helplessness. Its simply not their job to fix their computer. That would be YOUR job. And I don't give a damn why it broke.

Second, you fix a machine and that person is back to being productive again. Thus, you have been productive. If you can't get satisfaction from that, then you're missing the point of your employment. (And should you have a shred of social skills, the person you helped will probably be most grateful.)

While I'm at it, let me point out to all that deadlines are part of business. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Why does IT think that acting like a complete ass with co-workers helps anyone?

  16. In the defense of Lucas on Footage From Star Wars: Episode III · · Score: 1

I could not disagree more with some of the posts about Star Wars and George Lucas. I believe that the prequel movies were certainly of sequel caliber, and in some respects even better. And although posting against the slashdot bash-fest is probably a waste of my time, I just can't let this one slide. It saddens me to see post after post slamming Lucas. Shameful, really.

First and most importantly, the prequel narrative is just wonderful. How cool is it to see some of the history of the sequel characters? (excuse spelling here...) Obee-Wan (as a bad-ass), 3PO, Luke's parents, a younger yoda (as a bad-ass as well), the senator / dark lord pulling all the strings, and of course a young Vader? And not a single character is one dimensional. Like 'em or not, they all exhibit traits / flaws / emotions that we can relate to. If Lucas did not flush out his characters so well, could we form such strong opinions about them (take Jar-jar for example).

Subtleties in the story, should you recognize them, abound. Yes Annie wined his way through episode two nearly getting on everyone's nerves. But then, so did Luke. Luke didn't whine as much as his father, and Luke didn't get drawn into the dark side as did his father (hate leads to anger...) Brilliant.

Jar-jar has taken a beating, but I for one enjoyed the character. Lets set aside the fact that this character is 100% CG (flawlessly executed). Jar jar was awarded and honored by a race of folks who he was taught never to interact with. And although he did bumble his way through the epic battle facing thousands of droids, it was not finally his dumb luck that got him his place in history, but his bravery and willingness to go after what he believed in despite the odds. In Jar-jar we see a hero. What a shame Lucas has taken such abuse for introducing such a character.

Secondly, the prequel continues to push boundaries of movie making. If I'm not mistaken, episode one was the first all digital shooting. His green screen work, while in breadth amazing at the time, is more impressive in the fact the CG worlds were of his imagination. The battle scene with thousands of CG droids from episode one and the beginning of the clone wars in episode two surly have opened doors for LOTR and others. And even old effects like blasters and light sabers still sound exactly like they should years later.

To say that Lucas is in danger of losing the franchise is ridiculous. To say that anyone can come up with the same special effects is ludicrous. Lucas continues to be one of the greatest artists of our times, which is why he is out making movies, and you all are posting to slashdot. I for one am anxiously awaiting the most exciting story of the entire Star Wars series, and I'm sure it will be nothing short of incredible.

  17. Thanks for playing... on Nintendo President On Future Of Gaming · · Score: 1

"Although PS2 was a sales success because it had a DVD player function,
Ummm... No. PS2 was a sales success because of the titles offered at launch and the solid reputation as a platform garnered by PS1. Backwards compatibility with PS1 titles and great design didn't hurt either. But to say that its success stems from the fact that it has a DVD player is silly.

And if Iwata doesn't dig DVD players in his game systems, he really is going to choke on the PS3:
If Sony's aspirations succeed, then the Playstation 3 will not be a pure video game console, but rather measure the amount of milk left in the fridge, record TV programs to hard-disk, automatically download new software, perform Tera-flop operations and a variety of other things. In short, if one can automate, computerize, network or electrify a process, then the PS3 should be able to take on the task. From SPReporter article.

And in the same vien (and in his same sentence,) if Iwata is a little put off by "hardware where the sole function wasn't playing games," then he's obviously not a big fan of mods, and throwing away a great customer base.

He used the example that cell phones that play games use up battery power quickly, having a direct impact on the cell phone's core functionality.
And what's next? Refrigerators that dispense water and ice (thus reducing storage space and impacting core functionality,) autos with navigation systems (thus reducing the core map storage functionality of your glove box,) computers that play DVDs (thus reducing the core functionality of your adding machine)??? Yes, Iwata. This maddness MUST END!

Iwata drew parallels between the current state of the gaming industry and the decline in popularity of the shooting and fighting game genres.
No doubt there. Shooters are certainly on the way out. Hardly anyone is making them anymore.

He cited Pokemon, a franchise that has sold more than 10 million GBA games worldwide, as one exception to the rule and seemed to indicate that the industry needs more titles like that.
No question. If Microsoft and Sony would only, then perhaps they could have a glut of non-selling consoles, too!

He once more stressed the pitfalls of online gaming and the problems of subscription networks, and then pointed to new Pokemon games for the GBA as alternatives to Internet play.
Pokemon for the GBA as an alternative to Internet play??? Is this guy for real???

    Iwata is out of touch.
