He's right. He didn't say that it was a way to improve education, but it would most certainly improve the public schools. When the top 10% of students who were pulled out of crappy schools by their parents are forced to go back, you can gaurantee that said parents are going to make damned sure that the school is up to snuff and the hooligans who are currently running it are forced out (administration, teachers, and students alike).

I'm not saying I'd like to see it happen, but it would fix public schools.

The problem with the current public schools is that rather than influencial citizens trying to improve their local schools, they're just pulling Johnny out and saying goodbye. If the people with money had a vested interest in the improvement of public schooling, you would see positive changes.

I think a lot of issues with public schooling would be fixed if we all finally admitted that not everyone will go to college. There need to be more VoTech schools and the like. In some schools the graduation rate is abysmal. Children should be given the choice to learn a trade and quit bothering the students who do want to go on to college.

More valuable? I think not.

Seriously... it works both ways. I'd be willing to be that you'd find a similar number of married people with a good work ethic as single people.

Yeah.. like iPod. Something that can be pronounced correctly just by looking at it. Not something that I have to go to the manufacturer's website to figure out how to say it without feeling foolish for saying it wrong.

And all the iterations of iPod haven't exactly hurt it.

    "I want an iPod."

"Do you want an iPod, an iPod shuffle, or and iPod nano?"

"I don't know, I just want an iPod."

"Do you want an iPod 30Gig, or and iPod 60Gig?"

And if someone looks at Playstation 1, Playstation 2, and Playstation 3 and can't figure out which is the newest, then I'm not sure how they were able to figure out how to get to the store.

  16. Re:Oh no. on Nintendo Revolution Renamed 'Wii' · · Score: 1

I don't see how Nintendo Wii is that much better than the other two. When they go into the store the choice is between 'Made Up Name' 360, 'Made Up Name' 3, and 'Made Up Name'. At least the Playstation gives some indication of what it might do.

The Wii almost looks like W2. I think picking a real word would have worked much better for them.

If someone goes into the store never having purchased a system before, they're asking an employee regardless of what the name is. All three console makers could have called them 'Video Game Machine' and there'd be confusion.

  17. Re:I think people have the wrong idea.. on Nintendo Revolution Renamed 'Wii' · · Score: 1

OK.. your parents like playing computer card games. What do they need a Wii for?

I'm guessing that your parents didn't buy the computer in order to play the card games, but to use it to browse the internet, do taxes, etc. The games are a bonus.

Do you think that unless you owned the Game Boy they would have ever purchased one?

And I didn't state that people over 25 don't change. They generally stick with the hobbies they have.

What I'm saying is that Nintendo is expecting a large segment of the population who has never shown interest in the type of gaming that Nintendo has offered in the past to run out and buy a console. Unless they offer a product that's revolutionary, these people most likely won't buy into it. Bully for Nintendo if it works, but I don't see it happening.

  18. Re:I think people have the wrong idea.. on Nintendo Revolution Renamed 'Wii' · · Score: 1

I still don't know who this 'everyone else' is. Most all kids play games, so that's not it. Anyone else who hasn't bought into gaming over the last 20 will probably never buy into it.

After the age of 25 or so, people generally get their hobbies set. What forty year old without kids (if they had kids, they'd probably buy a system anyway) is going to all the sudden get into gaming because a new system that they haven't been reading about or been interested in before has shown up in the section of Wal-Mart that they never go to?

It's like the sports car industry trying to break into the geriatric market. Those who like sports cars already have one, the rest most likely won't buy one no matter what.

I like Nintendo and I wish them the best of luck, but I think they're trying to sell to a group of people who don't exist and alienating otherwise on-the-fence gamers in the process.

But if the target audience is non-gamers, then the name matters that much more. They'll have no idea about the shiny specs, and they're not reading up about upcoming games.

If someone who's never bought a system before goes into the store sees Playstation 3, XBox 360, and Nintendo Wii I think they'll pass on the Nintendo product because they have nothing to base their decision on BUT the name and price. It's a shame too because it would probably be the best fit for that customer.

I don't think it's that they're worse so much, but that a lot of stores aren't enforcing the age recomendations on the games. It's difficult for a child to see an R rated movie, nearly impossible for an NC-17 movie. A kid going into the big box store generally doesn't have a hard time buying a Mature rated game.

I'm on the fence about the issue. On the one hand, I don't like the government regulating EVERYTHING. On the other hand, if stores would self-police better this issue probably wouldn't be as big a deal.
