A group of activists have forced ford motors into designing a car that effectivly comes free of any 'new car smell', due to a new breed of allergy that is hitting the nation by storm, that has been reffered to by many experts in the field as 'crazius-is-teh-youtius'. The allergy is mainly ocurrent in individuals 20 - 45, that work in a closed office environment with little to no fresh air and lacks proper vacation time. Analysts estimate that approximatly %78 of the population is prone to obtain this allergy, mostly centered around the New York region.
My point is, isn't Internet a proper name? not a generic "word for"? internet isn't just "inter-connected-network-of-networks", it's, like... CowboyNeal... why capitalize the "Cowboy"? it's part of the name... like, I can't explain it (partly because I've had one to many bawls and don't have the serenity right now to sit down and think of a proper explination) but, like... damnit... it's the Internet, end of story.
I Spit! (yes, I capitalized that).

I fail to see the logic in your argument. If you were a millionaire, and you needed a heart transplant ASAP, wouldn't you use all the money, or at least most of it, at your disposal in order to ensure your life was saved?

That's insane. In my opinion, one of the most clever things I've seen done. Hey, if you have extra cash laying around go right ahead, you have to think about it, if you get on a waiting list for a donor, you're going to be waiting a while. Face it, the world is run by money, and the people that can't afford to live in it die off. I know it's a pesimistic way to see it, but it's a reality, I don't like it, but that's the way it is. Anyways, back to the point, if you have the money, use every resource to keep yourself alive, isn't that the point of it all?
Apparently a large portion of the Slashdot commenters aren't aware of what '0wn' means in the hacker/cracker sense of the word.
Are you sure you don't mean $cr1p7-k1dd13 sense of the word? No real hacker I've ever met has felt the need to talk in this obscure language we all recognize as '1337'.
For those of you who don't know... '1337' is the hacker/cracker word for 'leet' or 'elite'.
What the hell!? How is that flaimbait? Did you not see my 'sig' underneath that post? It was supposed to be a joke, assholes.:-/
Why don't you mod me down for this too while you're at it?
You probably will too? Won't you? You'll think it's funny too, won't you? You'll laugh 'till your little wee-wee explodes with golden streams of steaming showers and you anus roars with thundering gasses, all the while going 'Hehe... I just modded him down for flaimbait because he sucks at making jokes! Hehehe!'... ...Goddamnit!
What is an academic degree, except a title of nobility?
Look, good sir. 'Title of Nobility' it may well be, but that doesn't mean it's an honourary title. You still work your ass off to get any PhD. So this little 'Title', in actual fact, distinguishes you from those whom didn't bother getting a certain education, and those who did. Granted, there are people that without degrees, manage to do great things. But you can't tell me that having a PhD. in CompSci isn't an advantage over someone that didn't? I've seen various threads in here posting the same thing I'm saying right now. I recall just reading one that said he learned everything from books but still wishes he 'knew how python' worked, or something to that effect, my point? It's not like the Queen of England is giving you an honourary "Sir.", What you get, is just a way of identifying your achievments.
Who would you rather conduce an open heart surgery on you, Dr. Stephens, or the random dude with a 'Cardiology for Dummies!' book?
I dissagree, this seems to be the perfect "American" thing to do.
He knows too much, shoot him! We'll lose money if he leaves!
Even if he signed a non disclosure agreement, by enrolling to work under a competitor, he's not necessarily revealing any secret information about the previous company is he? So that means that if I write the core for Windows XP, then I could never work for any other company that wrote operating systems because there existed a possibilty that I could reveal secrets, specially if the company that was employing me was, TransGaming? or RedHat?
"Filing a lawsuit under the Induce Act is like dropping a litigation bomb on any company that gives users products that have even the slightest potential to assist in copyright infringement."
While they're at it, why not get rid of the internet? All copyright infringemnt, mainly, happens on the internet. Or why not ban computers all together? Tons of potential there... even without the internet, computers can still potentially infringe copyrights. I see this as a bunch of little children wanting to leech the people from their money. Really, these are all actions that I would see a six year old deciding.
little sister: "If you don't let me watch the TV I'm telling mom!"
little brother: "No, You've already seen 6 shows in a row!"
little Sister: "Mom! Tommy's not letting me watch TV!"
little Brother, to sister: "Fuck you."
Hollywood is crying to the senate because they can't get the whole cookie. Stop it, you already own %90 of it. These people are diving in pools of money, what's having 3 lambourghini's as opposed to 4 going to hurt you? 3 isn't a nice round number like four? Aw, poor baby, he can't buy that awsome private jet he always wanted, he'll have to stick to standard one, assholes.
Imagine all the beowulf clusters running linux out there, now imagine the beowulf cluster of lawyers you'd need to get all those shut down. No company could afford a small army of lawyers like that, that's suicidal, that's like... making a beowulf cluster of a million Apple RAID servers, good way to go bankrupt.:P
Imagine a beowulf cluster of all the computers of people that read slashdot everyday, damn, you could hack the planet with that thing in 0.832595 seconds.
That's awesome. As long as the companies don't overdue it and start going bakrupt, thus, this little 'perk' thing dies off, I don't mind it, but I don't want the companies going down the drain and screwing the job market again just so I can get a few gym sessions but lose my job 2 years down the road.
Even a Commodore 64 running Geos could be "ready for the desktop" by this definition, but the fact is that when we read "ready for the desktop" we understand "ready to replace Microsoft Windows".
I can't be bothered to read through all those responses, but what about games? Sure Transgaming / Wine is around, but the experience just isn't the same. Ready for the desktop is one thing. But the fact that you can't play Warcraft III: TFT at the same res/graphic quality on slackware than you can on XP is really going to make linux lose some market, no matter how "ready for the desktop" it is, it all comes down to compatability.
I hope this is the first post. :D
What a shitty website. Science Fiction Writer he may be, but obviously he hasn't kept his site up with the times... Er, the times 20 years from now.
So does this means Slashdot will soon be implementing this?

sue me
if youre an american... please dont
So you mean wired news doesn't feel like capitalising the word, eh? Well, here's what I think.. Aren't you suppose to capitalize words that, ah whatever, google can explain it better: http://www.google.ca/search?q=define%3A+capital+le tter&btnG=Search&hl=en&ie=UTF-8/

Actually, it is a version number. :-/
If I'm not mistaken the latest one is OS X 10.4?
