If you are an elephant in the room, then that makes two of us. I played FPS games a while back, but each new incarnation just seemed like a rehash of the same thing with slight variations. It got old for me.

In my case just hunting your opponant, like in CS, is interesting on occasion to hear your husband yell, "Would you stop killing me!!!!" I, however, find much more amusing ways to get that kind of reaction.

(Honey, when you read this, I promise I love you!)

As a woman who games, I have to agree with your assessment. I am completely insulted by games that are genderized to any extreme. Whether it be towards males or females. Anything that obviously is reaching for a gender stereotype ends up being less than satisfactory in my experience. Nowadays I play the oddball games that don't fit the formulas out there. Katamari Damaci, Pikman, The Sims, Insaniquarium, etc. The game I am really really waiting for with anticipation this year is Spore.

Why don't I play the more violent FPS? You could say it's because I am female, or you could listen to me say I have done that, and it all seems a rehash of the same freaking game with different skins, and slight variations. I am a female minority in my circle of friends, but I am not the only one that feels this way about games. I actually got interested in The Sims because of my male friends spending so much time on it.

  4. I am an interested student on DRM Lite for Electronic Textbooks · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am a student who is interested in electronic versions of my textbooks. I have a shoulder injury that prevents me from carrying much more than my laptop to class.

I have fantastic PDF searchable (and legal) copies of my gaming books from Steve Jackson Games, and can't understand why similar versions aren't offered for text books.

This quarter is the first time a 'hybrid' electronic version was even offered. This hybrid was $53, for a few paper pages, along with a code to get me into the online content for the rest. My problems with this, is that I would be more than happy to pay $20-30 for what I need, but to charge me the same amount as last years paper text seems greedy.

Still, despite the cost issues, I would still pay for it because I am physically unable to carry my books around. At my college no one has access to any electronic versions at this point. At least no one ever knows anything about such a version when I ask.

For me it's all about how easy is it to get my stuff off (or sometimes on) my phone, and to my computer. The last time I had to navigate Verizon's 'easy method' I ended up feeling like an idiot, and the only people who could help me were 13 year old script kiddies on a forum. I swear I have some computer experience out there, and am not a total moron.

I know they don't want you to automatically get stuff on your phone, because then who would they sell ringtones and wallpapers to? I just want to get the pictures off the phone the same way I do it with my digital camera. Speaking of which, I need to call Verizon and see about a possible USB adapter for my phone, and see if that would work.

You know, your husband only did that because he wants a threesome with you and another woman, and it looks like he did a good job of getting you used to it.

Or, perhaps, he likes to play female characters because he just really likes dressing in women's clothing. Do you know how hard it is to find nice shoes in a men's size 14?

And since when does one have the right to play LBBT characters in a role playing game for heaven's sake?

Why would you not have the right to play a LGBT character? My husband and I played DaoC for a while, and he played a female character, as did I. We also played our characters as lovers. By your logic that would not be allowed at all. It's a game that reflects reality. In reality the gay and lesbian population hovers around 11% to 14% in every culture. It exists as a normal part of the range of human behavior, always has and always will no matter who dislikes it.

Just because they set up an arbitrary rule, that is only inforced haphazardly, does not mean it's just. There used to be rules about race, that your argument was used to defend. "Why can't they just sit on the back of the bus. It's the way the rules are." "Women just are not able to vote, they don't have the sense. That's just the way the rules are."

I would be upset if I were to enter a game like this, and couldn't play with my husband, just because someone didn't like that we were opposite genders. Where I couldn't even reference we were in a committed relationship, and everyone around me used invectives that demeaned my sexual orientation.

It costs nothing to be tolerant of another person. If they aren't harming you, or themselves, people should be allowed to pursue their happiness in any way they want. It won't hurt 'the children!' to see and be exposed to different things. (As the 'for the children' argument is always next up.) That is a teaching oppurtunity for good parents to explain the families values.

My experience with the over sexualization of female characters can be summed up in a little anecdote.

My husband and I lived with a roommate, and we got Tenchu for the playstation back in the day. At first I liked the game despite the snotty female character because I could actually play an avatar that was my gender. Then our roommate started developing a fascination with the female avatar. He bought several walk through magazines, and got a cheat code to put the female avatar in less clothing. After walking in on him several times while he was trying to angle the character so he could get a good view of her cheat code induced nudity, I just couldn't play the game anymore.

I didn't really mind that the character was a bimbo, or that there was a cheat code to make her nearly naked on her lower half. I was really disturbed by my roommates behavior, and felt if he wanted to spend that much 'quality time' with the game he should get one for his room so no one had to walk in on him. I never could play that game again. Shudder. . .
