    if you think management is just "skimming all the profits off their work" you probably won't amount to much in life untill you realize your error.

    proper management allows you to focus the best talent you have on the most critical problems or most profitable production. a good manager will ensure that the ace programming team (or insanely great solo coder) doesn't have to spend his time doing stupid menial shit by hiring some mediocre and somewhat above average coders to complete the mediocre tasks.

    a skilled manager allows an artisan to concentrate on his work and ensures materials, storage, and marketing gets done.

    a skilled manager makes sure a team of ordinary office workers are operating efficiently and work does not get wasted and duplicated.

    that is what switched cable is for. switched cable means that each customer gets N channels where N is the number of boxes you have, probably 1-3. with that they can give each channel 10 times the bandwidth, offer near infinite channels, AND have a metric assload of bandwidth freed up for other uses. the downside is that unless the hardware and signaling is very snappy you get annoying lag changing channels.

    i think the problem occurs when the switches "learn" a circular route and so packets get stuck in that circular route at whatever speed the network runs at.

    i worked in a supermarket, yes it is sloth and gluttony causing the excess weight in >95% of cases. take a field trip to your local supermarket and observe the produce, bakery, meat, bread, and frozen foods aisles.

    i'll tell you right now where you will see the fewest fatties; the produce aisle.

    did you fail econ 101.

    the expectation is that they will sell MOAR. and it is likely that they will in fact sell moar. if $10 got you one CD on a particular service you would reasonably be careful to only buy a CD you wanted, but if you could get whole CDs for 10 or 15 cents you might spend $20 or $30 to get tons of music, the utility of any given album may be lower but the combined utility of a large collection is higher than a single "better" album.

    anyone who analyses the literature will hate neuromancer and most other cyberpunk as well. if you prefer to visualize it as a story and put yourself into the world it is a thouroughly enjoyable book, i say this not based on old memories, but rather based on a week ago when i finished the book.
