It looks cool and all, but theres an even bigger looking one to the left. How exactly can they tell the difference? Maybe the wavelength/frequency of the light is different, and if so how would they actually know what they're looking at? I wonder how accurate the stuff that these scientist tell us is. I'm sure a lot of this stuff is just based on educated guesses.

I really hope companies like Epic games and id Software make lots more linux games! I'm still waiting for the Linux doom 3 build, and Linux is seriously in the need of more games. Hopefully Epic and id will motivate more big companies to port their games to linux. While they're at it, they should pressure ATI to fix their linux drivers.

On a similar note, I think Linux is a good candidate for future gaming platforms (I'm thinking ps3) because of it's flexibility. Last I checked, sony has already made use of Linux in their products.

  9. Why would MS conform to standards? on Universal3D vs. Real Open Standards · · Score: 5, Insightful

MS isn't interested in helping the competition, they're trying to push down the competition. As long as they have a monopoly and they ignore standards, it can make it even easier for them to retain their monopoly. We hear all the time about how people don't want to use non-MS products due to incompatabilities. I would be very surprised if MS ever actually does conform to web standards and such.

  10. Re:Get a better account on Gmail Cracks Down on Third-Party Notifiers · · Score: 1

I use evolution, which lets me digitally sign and encrypt messages, manages contacts, and a whole lot more. IMAP is awesome, because you can have 10 different email clients all in sync. Gmail's biggest problem is that there is no pop/imap access, and it can also be slow at times. As well, I think web interfaces are sorta annoying. Thunderbird is a great client if you don't use *n[iu]x, and I think evolution is the best (for me anyways, I use gentoo linux). I can also easily encrypt and digitally sign messages using gnugp, gmail doesn't do that at all. Another thing that gmail seriously lacks is a calendar/task management thing, which is all built into evolution (and i can sync it with my palm).

  11. Get a better account on Gmail Cracks Down on Third-Party Notifiers · · Score: 5, Interesting

I suggest either running your own email server, or getting a decent imap account from your isp. Although webmail services may be convenient at times, you have to come to grips with the fact thats its a webmail service, so you're not going to get all the bells and whistles. Gmail is neato, but I don't think it's good enough for the power user.

Maybe people should consider some other options. Even when MS seems to be making an attempt to fix issues, they always seem to come up short. I think competition is healthy though, cause that means that all software will get better faster. The name Adam Smith comes to mind. I think he said something about how monopolies cause a decrease in the quality and an increase in price of products. With that in mind, the less that people use Windows, the more likely MS is to make an effort to increase the quality of their software.

Seeing as I haven't heard much news on any non-Canadian teams other then spaceshipone, this is awesome for Canada. We're going to be the first to make an official launch, and we now possibly have a second on the go. As things get closer to October (Canadian team launches on the 2nd, Americans on the 4th) this whole X-Prize thing is starting to get really interesting. Its pretty hard to predict how things will turn out right now, but it's definitely going to get very exciting.

On another note, I only live about 4 hours from where the first Canadian team is launching, so I'm going to get to experience that.

I personally love ebooks. I have a $100 Palm m500, which has a backlight, so I can read without having to worry about the lighting or turning the page. Not to mention, I can have 50 books on a SD card. Why more people haven't caught on, I don't know. My favourite part is laying in bed and reading until I fall asleep (which is convenient, seeing as the thing powers itself off eventually, and I don't have to worry about the lights).

Aswell, I've heard other people criticize the whole ebook thing because they think its not as clear (to look at) or something. If you doubt me, you should just walk into a best buy or something and play with them yourself.
