  2. Ender's Saga on Baby Steps Toward Quantum Computers · · Score: 1

    For those of you who are interested, there is a series of books called Ender's Saga which explore interesting aspects of advanced physics in a fictional sense. Although I won't go into details (don't want to spoil it), I will say that the books contain very interesting content about a super-being/computer that uses a concept which closely resembles that of entanglment (called philotes in the books). For anyone looking to massage their brain on this subject, give these books a read.

  6. Re:Seeing alot of misinformation... on Corporate Work in the US vs. Canada? · · Score: 1
    But because healthcare is public, you have no option of spending more to get better service (ie to use private services). In the US, the more money you are willing to pay, the better the service you will get. But you have to pay the money up front. Families aren't forced into bancrupcy because an uninsured family member comes down with cancer.

    This is only partially true. In Alberta (where I live) there is some privitized health care available. It still works differently from the US though. For example, if millionaire Bob wants a CT scan because he bumped his head the other day, he would have to wait at a regular hospital. If he comes up some cash, he can head on over to a private clinic and get a CT scan right away. This way, if Jimmy falls off his bike and breaks his head, they can give Jimmy the CT scan he needs right away rather then having to wait for Bob the millionaire to finish wasting resources.

With custom rules, you can configure snort to report packets which have relavence, rather then capturing all packets and looking through afterwards. Hope that helps.

The bottom line is that we pay levies now to download music, and the music industry shouldn't be able to make us pay levies and buy music. They can't screw us twice without someone noticing. Recently someone noticed too.

    I hardly watch television, but its naive to deny it's influence on society. I think just about everyone, at some point in their lives, will sit infront of the idiot box. For example, even the diehard tv-haters my become bored when sitting in a lobby, and their attention will be drawn to the television. Or, if you ever go to a restaruant or a pub, you'll probably notice how several sport televisions. I myself hardly watch TV, but I'm willing to admit that if I see the news on, I may watch, or if I'm REALLY bored I might look to see if there is something to watch. (such as the simpsons ;)

  19. xbox n stuff on Bill Gates Forecasts Victory Over Spam · · Score: -1, Informative

    I remember how the xbox was going to be an incredible machine and blah blah blah. Although, compared to other consoles it is quite powerful, its still fairly weak. It lacks the possibility for upgrades (such as the processor or memory) and by today's standards 800mhz is hardly anything (i think thats what the clock speed is off the top of my head). Another thing i think is 'less noble' about the xbox, is the fact that most of the important components in the machine aren't even made by microsoft (nvidia i believe). I don't believe console gaming will catch up to pc gaming any time soon.

  20. Silly intel on Intel to Increase Stages in Prescott · · Score: 0, Troll

    It seems like intel is continuing to make poor decisions. Their Itanium processor is lame, the p4 is rediculously overpriced, and now they're planning on making more expensive yet less powerful processors. I personally suspect intel as a 80% marketing, 20% product sort of company. I think i'll stick to AMD for now.

Maybe, it could eliminate a need for a keyboard and mouse someday, making computing much more comfortable. Of course, there are the obvious advantages for special needs people. Without the limitations of a keyboard and mouse, productivity might reach a new level. Writing letters and such might become a lot easier for those of us who think faster than they type or write.

  22. Re:Less TV == more social on Social Side-Effects Of Internet Use · · Score: 1
    Yes, but keep in mind, television is a brainless activity. You can't socialize while you watch the idiot box. On a computer on the other hand, you can spend that entire 15.8 hours talking to as many people as you choose. There are also multiplayer games, forums (maybe ever slashdot), and a host of other things which can all be considered socializing. As well, how does the information online get around? You read it.

    On another note, I have noticed that I read a lot more books these days, and I definately do not watch very much TV. Sometimes I watch a hockey game or the news or something, but thats it.

    The interweb has revolutionized the way we gather information. It has become a cheap, simple, and reliable alternative to traditional systems such as ancient 'libraries'. Once, many years ago, people would actually travel from their homes or workplaces, to these 'libraries' and browse the 'library's' limited selection. Today, there are far fewer information borders. I see it as evolution. At one time, people would even write on pieces of paper and have them delivered to other people. This could often take weeks, which would seem unbarable when compared with IM services or emails. No, I'm not making up stories, despite how unbelievable. Aren't we lucky?
