Your question is more or less addressed in the last paragraph of question 1.12 in the Duke Nukem Forever FAQ.
They're not a publicly held company, so they can get away with it.
If they are truly trying to make the best FPS ever, and they are actually working on it (I'm skeptical but willing to give them the benefit of the doubt), then I respect them taking their time. Of course, I'm a Nintendo fanboy, so I'm used to waiting a long time for a game:)
Sure that would work in some cases. But what about a virus that exploits a bug making permissions useless? Or hardware failures?
If your information is vital it should always be backed up on a seperate physical medium, regardless of your OS.
Of course, this isn't to say that Windows isn't fcking retarded for always running as root. The worst part is that even if you create a seperate user account some programs (like Warcraft) won't run without root privelages. (If anyone knows how to fix this a response would be appreciated)
I would say for the majority of/.ers that engage in actual discussions, they are being social.
Of course there are trolls who are being antisocial, but I personally would rather those people sit at home and post "BSD is dead" posts than go out and be antisocial in the streets.
Try giFT. It connects to Gnutella, OpenFT, and FastTrack (Kazaa's network).
There's also a lot of different clients for it (even one designed to look like Kazaa. Personally I can't vouch for any of them except Apollon, as that's the only one I've tried, but it works great.
Zelda would be worth it alone. I bought a GC the day they came out for Zelda and Perfect Dark alone. The latter is going to be X-Box only now though since Microsoft bought Rare, but I'm still glad I bought it.
I don't know if anybody else has had problems with SanDisk USB drives, but my friend bought a 128MB one and it freezes up when he tries to save files bigger than 10MB or so. He's tried it on several computers and it always does the same thing.
That doesn't mean you need Windows Media Player to watch it. I just watched it on MPlayer. It's pretty funny in some spots. I like when McBride says "We can look forward to a world that is not free." I think they should make that there company slogan:)
All of them work better in my opinion. Equally well at least by any objective standard.
I would have to agree that they work better. I just happened to run up2date right before reading this story. If I had just run windows update I would be rebooting right now.
80's with touch screens? They were predicted to take over, but that didn't happen.
They may not have taken over, but they are actually quite common. Most restaurants use touch screen cash registers now.

AOL's $299 PC

On the other hand, is that really a $699 computer?
That's actually a pretty common thing in marketing. It doesn't matter what the price comes out to in the end; it just matters that it sounds good when the customer decides to buy it (which at that time they'll be thinking $299 not $699).
Of course, I'm speaking of the average customer. Not those of us who actually use math.
Let me give you the flip side: People who care so little about their noise because it doesn't bother them, and they have nothing remotely resembling a clue that it does bother other people, and it's not a "choice" the other people make, it's a deep-seated instinct.
Yes but there is a big difference in telling your roommates to STFU (which he should have done), and shooting up their XBox.
Hell even unplugging the damn thing in the middle of their game would've gotten the point accross.
I have XP and Fedora (had RedHat 9 until 2 weeks ago) on my box (1GHz Celeron, 128MB RAM, POS), and from my experience Windows is a little faster when running just a program or two, but Fedora/RedHat is much faster when running a lot of apps at once.
Windows also tends to crash if I try to run too many things (usually only with large apps though).
While I certainly don't agree with you that Linux sucks, I definately agree that the posts in the BSD section usually do.
I personally don't get it. With how anti-MS most Linux users are (me being one of them), I don't understand why any of them would want to attack any [free] MS competitor. (Especially if they try to use the monoculture is bad argument against MS)
Oh well, F-them. As somebody mentioned in a post from another BSD article a couple of weeks ago, you just have to bump up your threshold in the BSD section.
exaggeration (how the heck do you spell that, anyway?)
If you're ever unsure how to spell something, type it into google. If you spelled it wrong it'll say did you mean (correct spelling)? (Example)
While I'm sure you're joking, that would be cool if they were really doing that.
I would rather see new characters designed for each movie (assuming they looked real) than the same actors over and over again.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I'd try it now but I don't really feel like booting up Windows.

That's nothing. I got a D in my calc class last semester and I didn't even go for the second half of the semester.
I wouldn't be surprised if we already use similar tactics.
I would imagine people's suceptibility to it would vary greatly though.

Thanks for the info. Games (Vice City at the moment) are the only thing I use XP for anyways.

I make six figures too!
:(
Oh... you mean without the decimal point.
Zelda would be worth it alone. I bought a GC the day they came out for Zelda and Perfect Dark alone. The latter is going to be X-Box only now though since Microsoft bought Rare, but I'm still glad I bought it.
right...just visit the site, unknowingly download the embedded bug/widget, and they'll help themselves.
Why on earth would you use Windows to answer the survey?
This is not that strange. People shouldn't get free repairs forever on any device
Since when is changing a battery repairing something?
I don't know if anybody else has had problems with SanDisk USB drives, but my friend bought a 128MB one and it freezes up when he tries to save files bigger than 10MB or so. He's tried it on several computers and it always does the same thing.
it's only in Windows Media Video!
:)

Is that painting on the top of their website copyrighted?
Well, the painting was finished in 1512 and copyrights didn't exist until 1710, so I doubt it.

I somehow didn't see parent's last sentence before I replied. I guess I need more caffeine :)

automagically
:P
I don't know if that was a typo, but either way it's a pretty cool word
Which version of Windows?

Of course that's just my anecdotal evidence : )
