  1. Re:Transferring employees on Nokia Outsources Symbian OS Work · · Score: 1

    I work for Accenture, yes.

The company is large and far reaching. That said with any statistical group of people you will have many different skill sets. I assure you that there are very highly qualified and knowledgeable people here. There are also different cultures and the ability to develop new cultures. Each operating group is for the most part independently managed and could fail, yes. However with any business there are failures and successes. From my experience by and large most projects are successes.

I would encourage everyone to not to write off the possibilities for Symbian and her developers yet. This was a business decision but ultimately if the developers continue to ensure their product is of high quality then there is a future. Trends such that Apple claim to innovate come and go. At the end of the day when people need a phone to be a phone, Symbian will be there.

Disclaimer - My comments are my own and do aim to reflect or speak for the opinions of Accenture LLC.

Listen here the parent obviously did not correctly follow the intentions of both the phone manufacturer as well as the assumption of the software designer. You are supposed to throw the phone into the closest trash receptical after 3-6 months of use and purchase a new $500 phone. By ensuring that your phone is securely in a landfill you can then feel confident that you will be supported to the fullest extent by your software vendor as well as your hardware vendor. Of course both data security and software backups and data transfers are out of scope of both the software vendor as well as the hardware manufacturer. I personally suggest an 8 lb maul against an uneven and sharp surface. Ensure that particles of your previous device are smaller than a dime. As for software backups and transfers I suggest a professional paid service that will steal, ahem, manage that data for you.

  6. Re:Women associate it wrongly on Microsoft Patent Deems Comic Books Shameful · · Score: 1

If a woman was introduced to me as being really into Comic's, Football, and Beer(microbrew) then I would think "WIN" and not something negative. However the same probably could not be said if someone were to introduce me to a woman in the same way. A similar example from the woman's side might be reading Trash novels, Tennis, and Knitting. I guess I don't see anything wrong with any of these hobbies including Comic's. Shame is a public perception right? My argument for this type of perception is and will always be that a hobby that does not degrade, slander, or harm any person purposefully can be justified as not shameful. Comics, as the article relates to is a medium and is not shameful in and of itself. But a comic individually could be considered shameful. The self esteem portion of comic book reading is an entirely different topic. If someone has low self esteem and feels shameful for having a hobby that is not considered mainstream then they have a personal issue that they need to work on and it could absolutely affect their personal life. At a high level I see where MS's patent filing is going. I disagree that it is original and I think it is a bit trolling, but they have the right to file as any other entity. Comic != nerd, Beer drinker != alcoholic, Trash novel != repressed, Knitting != old.

  7. Reminder of a good mastered record on Apple in Talks to Improve Sound Quality of Music Downloads · · Score: 1

After reading the article and seeing the typical discussion of audio quality I decided to go back to my trusty vinyl. I put Orion by Metallica which has some nice subtle effects at the beginning. Specifically there is a washboard like electronic effect on the 3 chord intro E5 & Bm/D & Ebm that can be heard on the vinyl record. Going to youtube or from an mp3 demo the intro is much more subdued and all you can hear are the muted chords. When the drums enter on the record you hear a distinct crash of the cymbals where on the mp3 and youtube you hear what sounds like a tambourine or a tin salt shaker. Also I play my records at around -8 db that same -8db for a youtube video or mp3 would blow my ears out. Those I play at around -28 to -30db. There is a difference and what people need to look for isn't that a different exists but rather which one includes more natural artifacts like hearing fingers slide along guitar strings or when a singer takes a breath. Nirvana's Unplugged album is a great example as well. The CD includes a lot of background noise and the talk in between the tracks but it still seems like the sound engineers played around with the sound and some things are difficult to hear. I don't have this on vinyl but I would be curious to know if some of the recordings subtleties are easier to pick up on in a non over-engineered vinyl master.

If this is Verizon DSL home service than it would not be surprising as the only monitoring they typically do is a link dead warning. Home users can unplug their DSL modem from the wall and they won't get a call from Verizon. A business DSL customer/contract would get a prompt call from Verizon if that same modem were unplugged. That is the difference between a Home contract and a Business contract. The cost difference being sometimes hundreds of dollars for the extra monitoring and uptime securities.

Internet traffic tends to look like a perfect curve that starts an upward trend around 700-800 for a given timezone and increases in a consistent patterned manor until 12 noon. There is a slight dip between noon and 1300 a second peak from 1300 till 1400 and a steady decline until 2300 to midnight. The decline from midday until midnight is slower but from all my experience in web traffic I don't see an increase in traffic after 1800 compared to the rest of the day.

  24. Metro Wifi is unfair and arguably illegal on The Tech Building Blocks of City 2.0 · · Score: 3, Interesting

I live in Minneapolis and our city wide wifi causes more problems than it solves. Once you get into the grid area reception to any access point other than the city wifi is poor. US Wireless ensured that their signals on all three non-overlapping channels are stronger anywhere inside the grid than any other source. That means Joe Bob running a personal wifi out of his home will have poorer reception than if this city wide wifi didn't exist. Oh and the wifi is both not free(actually rather expensive) and low bandwidth. I think that a city wide wireless network can have positive benefits, but I believe it needs to be better designed to not dance around fcc rules of broadcasting radio signals in a spectrum that is designed for general public use. My best suggestion would be to use a radio spectrum that had decent material penetration, one that is licensed by the FCC so no one else can use it, and uses a relatively cheap to manufacture radio in a number of general purpose packages. If we are going to use tax dollars to put together metro wireless internet grids why not simply design a technology around just that purpose. Of course I live inside a perfect world so take what I say with a grain of salt.
