You would think there would be limitations on HOW an employee could access such a large database. I mean, does AOL throw out CDs with conveniently formatted lists of all the screen names of its customers?
I don't think taking music and conforming it to critics, good or bad, will net a good song. Isn't that, at least partially, caused the boy band epedemic, Britney Spears impersonaters, ect? I would think the artist that puts themself into their music, has a passion, and some talent is what would make a great song.
Doesn't AIM get some money from advertisers since they get their adds put in front of millions of people? I dunno how much $ this would pull, but I would guess its enough to at least break even? Either way, I could see the justification for the more bandwith intensive parts of AIM being paid for, especially if the bandwith strain on the AOL system increases along with it.
What will the terms of service be? Same rules as using this over satellite, or is the **AA going to have a fit over this (though I think we may already know that answer)?
of some of Microsoft's choices for authentication passwords. For example: 1111111111111111 (dont remember how many, but a good guess) for activating a MS Visual studio package. Nice protection for a $1500 license.
I've had thoughts about this before, but why not have cities/towns/municipilities/ect which already have maps detailed down to the street level digitize these maps in a way that allows easy modification? That way, say a new housing development is brought into a section of town. It would be easy to just mark off houses ans street positions. If whoever would handle the mapping service for the town could integrate with the departments that handles zoning permits and other related topics, wouldn't this be feasible?
I have found rock climbing to be a very rewarding form of exercise physically and mentally. Puny little undergrad becomes slightly stronger, able to do some cool moves on the wall undergrad. If a gym is relatively close to you, I say check it out. Generally, you start out sucking, and then have a time period where it seems your skills sky rocket. After that comes the plateau. I'm just now moving off that initial skill plateau, so I cant comment past that.
Regardless, I find doing something besides "hitting the gym" (for non-running excersices at least). But that's my $0.02.
Wow, talk about support from the community. Even though this may be teasing legal bounds, I say the guy gets what he deserves! I can't wait to see if this guy gives a reply. The guy should send the pdf to him, just to rub it in his face:)
I second that. I dont think I've seen such a good article discussing how the machines work in such an easy format to read. The US could learn a few things from these Indians. I think the most important things they have over Diebold are: Simple (technical and user interaction) interface, the control unit idea/system seems to work rather well, physical security is the concern rather than hacking, and a rediculous lower cost compared to Diebold ($230 vs $3300 I think).
Why do people think of weaponry as the first use for a new method of power? Help to increase energy supply int he US, maybe convert a nuclear power plant ot use this source (whether or not that is possible is beyond me)? Nope. We want to built a bomb with it!
I go to RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) where we have an i2 connection. At least for users of DC++, theres virtually no one I've downloaded from who has been carrying a virus or such. Most users are knowledgeable enough that if they do download something that is spyware/adware they quit sharing it and delete it.
As for the arguement that the i2 lines should be used primarily for research, I think its a reasonable arguement. I try to use our local DC hub over the i2 hub when I can, but considering 600 users on RIT hub, vs 2000+ easy on i2, sometimes their are files you cant find locally.
I think this is a great idea! [Random_idea] Maybe even have an area dedicated to bleeding edge reports. Change the exhibit every month to keep the subject changing. [/Random_idea]
However, I would also hope that they track the validity of such reports. It would suck to have such a valiant effort towards showing REAL science when the report used is falsified. (The guy who falsisfied reports and wasn't exposed until he was up for a nobel nomination is an example that comes to mind. Popular guy to use reports off of, but later proved false.)
I hope this is a path the military will continue to follow. Security is vital when you come to rely heavily on intelligence. Lets just hope the dont stop here and take this as a serious effort.
My bad. I wasn't aware of Microsoft ever doing something like this before, though I have heard of them classifying OPen Source as "viral software". So, sorry about the ill claim.
I'm suprised this got moderated so high. No offense, but it seems like flaimbait to me. If Microsoft ever did something like that, the Open Source community would viciously open that wound and pour as much salt (press) on it as possible.
You do realize you'de be cutting out a siginificant portion of slashdot postings, right? After all, where would all the karma whores be left with? posts with a purpose? Hogwash!
I find in the classroom, internet access is more-so a distracting thing than a good thing, though not always. However, where it REALLY shines is outdoors and in the cafe type areas (Java Walley's at my school, RIT, comes to mind) where you can socialize, gather a group around, or whatever. In fact, I'm thinking of getting a el cheapo work laptop for this purpose. Getting out of the dorm room and away from instant access to the newest FPS can do a world of good. Overall, yay for wireless!
I'm a freshmen in college, (but this applies to anyone around my age group), what in the hell is going to happen to the tech hobs in the next 4 years? (how many years I have until graduation)
I'm a freshmen at RIT. When the non computer literate people on my floor ask for help, and I run adaware, I get 300+ hits easy. Install Google Toolbar, and that'll severly get reduced. So, to the average user, I say putting that handy little google toolbar on your computer is the easiest way to solve alot of headaches.
Amen brother. I find Outdoor rock climbing a personal release where its me, usually a friend or two, the rock, and the scenery when you top out. It's sorta like a meditation in and of itself, and something I would recommend any abled (sp?) body to try. (just bring a crash pad, safety counts)
This is very offtopic, but why do I get
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~lloyd/tildeImages/F ilm/JPark/PICS/3D.FS.gif
when I press the next button in Opera within this thread?
I would think that 0.99... would be approaching the value of one. Sorta think of it in the context of limits, where a function can sometimes approach but never reach a number. (as if you couldnt tell, my math reasoning is less than stellar)

Yes! People need to understand two relatively simple things for weight loss: exercise and caloric deficiet. If you got those, you got weight lose.
Note: This is a suggestion on how to make it fun.

I meant the "el cheapo work laptop". Not a $2000+ alienware that eats batteries for breakfast.

Is there going to be a mad rush for unique and interesting user names like stephee21857?
