It may not occur to everyone, but Netflix, Lovefilm, NOW TV or whatever don't have control over any of these things. It's entirely dictated by the movie studios, for example, we/have/ to use silverlight, because of DRM. We can't allow hdmi-out, because the movie studios won't let us. No streaming movie provider makes or has the ability to make any of these decisions, it is entirely within the realm of the rights-holder.
The only reason any of these work outside of silverlight is by the hardware vendor providing some form of DRM under which videos can be delivered. Anybody making hardware will provide this DRM if they have any sense, but for things like Linux, where DRM is a No-No and Microsoft won't support it, you're pretty much stuffed.
The irony is that the provider I work for develops the entire service on Linux, and yet any of our customers who want to watch movies on Linux, simply can't.
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Model fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Super Model for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to get laid. 20 minutes. At home, on my Homely, overweight yet loving wife, which by all standards should be a lot less fun than this Supermodel, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
The whole point of Chromium is that it acts as a single process per tab, not as multiple threads of one process.
So Chromium still won't run.
This is just more fuel for Linux (not that it needs any, nowadays)
"and that everything is layed out differently. Not too differently, but different enough that I want IE back."
I think you mean laid. Have you not noticed then that you can click 'customize...' and move everything about? You probably don't like firefox because you've never really "used" firefox. It's a very decent browser, and I used to really like IE.
Its your choice if you like IE or not, but bear in mind that microsoft deliberately make it nonstandard, and leverage their monopoly to get their own "standard" on the web, which is indeed a very evil and incorrect way to go about things.
52% compatibility? Forget it. Standards are an excellent thing and I cannot tolerate any person or company who decides to break them on purpose.
Lets hope that you never have to use Borland JBuilder then. Lets hope that you never have to pay the £4,000 per seat for the utter TRASH that is Borland Core SDP.
Working for a UK online gambling company who are just re-launching in the US... Our finance directory was questioned at the airport last time he visited the US, for two hours.
The question is, how at risk am I of being arrested if I were to visit?
That article is rubbish. Ubuntu is obviously the choice for first-time switchers, and is the most polished and accessible distribution for newbies and gurus alike.
The article doesn't seem to have much of a grasp of the concepts of Linux, or say who would switch and why, and what they'd encounter.
And as for paying for mandriva so that you can play DVDs. What the hell? Who wrote this crap?
Sorry, nice idea, but better articles have been written before. I think a windows->linux wiki written by past, present, and future switchers would be a much more interesting idea.
Yes, and how long before the flash wears out?
I used to compile java on my usb pendrive, and it lasted a number of weeks before it wore out.
It just isn't feasible.
Microsoft in no way want to help the competition, because it will reduce their profits. No business ever wants to reduce their profits, and this does not exclude Microsoft. THINK.
Microsoft don't want to help competitors. I agree with this, and I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy. But they are a business, and simply doing what businesses do.
So, screw Microsoft. Don't permit them to join anything, just screw them, like they are successfully screwing you. PLAY FAIR.
I'm sorry, in what world does OpenBSD compete with Windows XP, Apple OSX, etc...
Sure on the server side there is slight competition, but OpenBSD is so niche, it hardly counts.

It uses an ActiveX control. ActiveX should be outlawed.
If you're writing an article about the UK, it helps to use the correct spelling. I looked at "phase out checks" and thought, what?! Checks for what?!

I'd like to redefine the OS. I'll call it... Linux.

This is the thinking behind Elgg. An open source, open platform social networking app. Why don't people do research before writing articles.

Where does Leisure Suit Larry fit into all of this?
Yes, ubuntu had full support for both my wireless minipci cards.
One is an Intel ProWireless 2200bg
and
Ones is an Intel ProWireless 28xxabg (or something).
Even funnier, the 28xx one is totally unstable in windows, disconnects constantly, and under Ubuntu Linux it's perfect. Go figure.

Oh but yeah, the pc sounds good too...
