    Just use a VM

This implies having a Windows XP licence, which is a bit more than "Just"
    some prices
Even if these prices are out of date, you get my drift that this is an extra overhead.

I don't think you are allowed to run IE without a windows licence anyway, so the whole idea of running IE in linux would only be for convenience.

Just so you know I have an msdn subscription and therefore legal access to windows, however I would dearly love to ditch this dependency.

Having to test for IE clients is yet another lock in to windows.

...redistribute GPLed code as a service...

    I reckon that's a contradiction in terms.

Using GPL Code to provide a service is not the same as redistributing the code.

Though, if you extend the gpl'd code to provide a better service, it would be good to persuade people to publish the upgraded source, otherwise there is little incentive to gpl code for "web services".

    void foo(std::string a, std::string * b, std::string & c, std::string *& d)

If you pass a string into a & d, and a pointer to the string into c & d you get the following available inside your function:
a is a copy of the original value,
b is a new pointer to the original value,
c is the original value directly addressed,
d is a copy of the original pointer.

With a you can't modify the original string, only the new copy.
With d you can modify the original pointer.

    So there.

And for what it's worth I don't think knowing any particular syntax is ever a good measure of programming aptitude, it can only be a measure of experience in a particular paradigm. Though I agree with the rest of the post, and very much like Joel's articles.
