Put a frog (alive) into a pot of cold water. Put the pot on low heat. If you heat the water slowly enough, the frog will not jump out, even when it eventually boils to death.
We'll see if they pounce on this. If so, expect something like "See? Open Source projects are inherently vulnerable to hackers infiltrating and corrupting the code base"
This is not good. But it is a good thing it was caught and never got released!
(as a former AOL Time Warner employee) -- typical AOL bufoonery.
Not too alarmed, though. This article makes it like there is a "hacking" taking place, but in fact it is just scripted behavior of an update program running locally on the machine.
Yeah yeah they could "turn off competitor software" and all that.. And get sued IMMEDIATELY!
Not too worried..
I think on the whole he made some very good points.
For example:
"Should there be a reason to believe that code that comes from a variety of people around the world would be higher-quality than from people who do it professionally?"
A very valid question. I have been extremely pleased with how far the Windows platform has come between Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I also believe that Microsoft has been increasingly more proactive with regards to security and patches and creating as rock solid a platform as possible.
Further:
"There is no road map for Linux, nobody who has his rear end on the line."
I have had a problem with this as well when it comes to Linux. The biggest problem affecting Linux development lies in there not being a central vision, a "road map", for the platform.
Only a techie would think that case mods and skinnable apps equals an "age of aesthetics"
"Its clever, but is it art?"
Apple has had the brains to hire top-notch industrial design artists to help them out. Other companies are beginning to follow suit but they just don't seem to get "it" yet. This is partly because the economy sucks and there's not enough margin to justify the costs involved with top notch industrial design talent.. But maybe also because the consumer base just doesn't appreciate it that much.. ??
Rather fun thought -- China secretly planning to beat the USA to the

The PRC is a very insecure state when it comes to international affairs, and also very capable when it comes to R&D. The USA is just not putting much effort or money into Mars.... Well, anyway, who knows, a fun thought..
Instead, I cut my teeth on a TI 99/4A.. First it was BASIC and then that happy day when my daddy bought me EXTENDED BASIC for Christmas wooyeah! And the final joy was my 32k memory expansion unit along with the disk controller and disk drive. Made my system roughly 3' wide and I was smokin!
Yeah but it takes soooo much annoying practice to learn how to surf the waves.. How easy it would be to have a motor instead!
Well who knows if these things will be one of those trendy "hits" like the motorized scooter (you know the one about the size of a Razor but with a tiny chainsaw motor on the rear)
Classic PsyOps -- make the people believe there is an unseen enemy lurking around every corner, or hiding in every computer..
It really rankles me when I hear the term "cyber-terrorism"
A worm trashing your system has nothing at all in common with a bomber killing your wife and child on a bus or a military bulldozer razing your house. (or a plane crashing into an office building murdering thousands or bombs falling from unseen bombers etc etc)
That being said, this software in question SUCKED anyway! Talk about a piece of poorly programmed crapola. Is this the best that these "mad evil genius" ubervillains are capable of churning out?
I just got back from Europe where I was backpacking for some months. Visited an old friend of my family who moved to the Netherlands to be with her fella.. This lady is in her 60's and is suffering from slowly developing palsy. She had a great summation of the state of the American medical system:
"When it comes to diagnostics, they are the best in the world; But when it comes to treatment, they have completely missed the boat."

This is what is happening.
Wow that is really impressive, I hafta say. Twenty seconds to solve a fully randomized cube!! Kids these days!

I would have to think that this sort of behavior from our Sun is quite powerful and significant astrologically. Any thoughts from /.'ers on this?

You know, if it were my kids---
I would set up the email so that it only accepts emails from people in their addy book.
Child predators are a problem out there and they love the Net and email for seeking out and grooming their victims..

If only we had RFID tags back before Sept 11 it would have saved all those poor people!!!! WE NEED MORE!!11!!1!!!~`~@#!`zNO CARRIER
If you can afford em that is.. There's also Cross pens which are very nice.
You should go to a "pen store" and take a few different sizes and shapes for test drives, see what works best for you.
A good pen is an important investment! (well, at least, I think so)

Noisy buzzing surfboards along with the noisy buzzing scooters.. This is where I start becoming technologically conservative-minded.
Sheesh, when I HAD a woman I was LUCKY if I was able to spend as little as 10x of my time on porn sites!!
