  1. Picture frame with Media reader & NAS on Lite Linux Distros for a Digital Picture Frame? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been considering building a Digital Picture frame also.

I want to be able to insert my CF (SmartMedia, MMC, etc) Card into a "52,000-in-one" USB reader, hit a Transfer button and have the images transfered to my RAID'ed network attached storage (probably a samba share). Then have the option to erase the CF card

Have files renamed based on the EXIF information imbedded in the JPEG headers when they are transfered to the storage server
(for example, 2004-05-25_021544b YYYY-MM-DD_HHmmss and if that already exists append a letter), or perhaps the creation date of the image file depending on how hard it proves to read the EXIF info.

A simple interface to go through the pictures would be nice (not sure exactly what's already out there)

I was thinking something along the lines of Hardware buttons along the bottom of the frame, one each for going forward and back a year, month, day, and then per image.

Also maybe a dial to vary the speed of the slide show mode, and a "bookmark image" button...hrm yeah that'd be nice.

The general idea is to end up with a device that even grandma can use to view her pictures, and stick her camera card in and hit one button to transfer the pictures to a automagically backed up, raid'ed server.

Does this sound doable (without an insane amount of work :p)? Anybody have any sugestions, comments, want to tell me I'm an idiot, etc?

Microsoft would go a long way toward dowsing the fire of contempt that's burning at their door if they released their core OS (without any add-ons like Paint or Wordpad or any of the myriad extras they put into their distro) as Open Source and sold what are now XP Home, Pro and Server as commercialized add-on packages with support options.

I just literally laughed out loud...BWHAHAHAHAHA!
Are you kidding me? That is simply NOT a reasonable thing for a for profit company that is making oodles of money off it's OS sales to do.

Think about it for a second. Lets pretend you were in a high level PHB position at Microsoft. Would you even consider sugesting that? If so I am speachless.

Let's pretend that they do release their core OS, Why would the majority of the OEM's such as Dell and Compaq have any reason not to simply release their own 'Distro' with the Windows "core OS" and provide their own support *, rather then paying Microsoft for the "commercialized add-on package"?

    * IIRC OEM's already provide the support for Windows and if you call MS and say you have a OEM copy of windows they will tell you to contact your OEM for support.

You need to register in the CORES/ULS system if you have not already. Go to http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/ then click on "register CORES/CallSign".

Here's an FCC help page on FRN/ULS and registering with CORES. http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/about/gettingstarted1. html

Your callsign appears to already be assigned a FRN number. Go to your QRZ page and click detailed info, then click "FCC: ULS Listing". Your FRN appears on the ULS page.

I am also VERY sure that a Violin bow made with fishing line would sound awful. Horse hair violin bows are made in such a way that the hair is about an inch wide and as you play you rotate the bow so more of the hair contacts the bow when your hand is furthest from the strings and less as you move towards the strings. Also horse hair is quite fine. Much finer then then heavy fishing line

MS speach recognition is awful. Try Naturally Speaking Not great but from what I've seen and read it's the best out there.

Do nott forget to use a high quality headset (NOT a standalone microphone) such as one from Plantronics* or Logitech and try to get it posistioned the same way every time.

A short history on Naturally Speaking.
It was originally created by DragonSoft. Infact there was an article on the company and the Husband and Wife who started in in MIT's Technology Review back in the good ol days (around 1998) when you'd count off the weeks until the 1 issue per quarter would arrive.

They were then bought out by Lernout and Hauspie who had their own speach recognition software. Dragon Naturally Speaking was then integrated into L&H's product. If I recall correctly the integrated product didn't work very well.

L&H was then bought out by ScanSoft where Dragon Naturally Speaking lives today.

I'm not sure why I bothered to write all this (and I've probably got some of it wrong) this early in the morning. Oh well

    -TMF

I've found you can get the plantronics headsets _much_ cheaper online. For example the Audio .90 which sells at circuit city for $30 can be had for $15
