from the article: "...More important, everybody selling to home users -- Microsoft, hardware manufacturers, software developers and retailers -- needs to do a better job of informing customers of the risks and potential problems of Internet access."
I don't know why Apple doesn't pick up this ball and run like hell with it.
Most of the people I know that run 98, 2000 or XP just assume that ANY computer OS, Windows or Mac has the same internet "experience", but it just costs more to have the same crappy "experience" on a Mac.
"...Monthly prices for always-on broadband Internet starts at $19.99 for 256 kbps, and unlimited mobile VoIP calling is $29.99. Connections up to 1 Mbps and per-day pricing options are also available."
OK- so if I have my own domain: example.com and I choose NOT to have an SPF record for that domain, I should be able to SEND emails out as per my post above
and they "should" go through and not get rejected?
The only reason I would WANT to publish an SPF would be to PREVENT a spammer from using example.com as a bogus FROM address?
If so, then this may not be the huge PITA that it seems to be. (until spammers start spoofing example.com)
I have several domains,
lets say one is:
example.com
I currently use Eudora to send email from my primary ISP (earthlink) , but if I want the mail to "appear" as though it is coming from me@example.com all I have to do is create a "personality" in Eudora. I use Earthlink's smtp and the only thing I see in the headers is this:
X-Sender: me@example.com (Unverified)
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 12:08:28 -0500
To: user@earthlink.net
From: Microcars (me@example.com)
Subject: test
there is just this (Unverified) line in the X-Sender line, does this mean I will no longer be able to use this function of Eudora?
I can set up POP mail accounts for these domains, but I have to use the WEBMAIL feature of my domain's host because Earthlink blocks port 25 and will not allow me to use another SMTP server (can't use.Mac at home either because of this)
getting a little OT here, but after experimenting with the * or "catchall" email address on several domains, I have found the best username to be....SPAM
So many people use things like:
johnNOSPAM@example.com
john@NOSPAMexample.com
johnREMOVETHIS@example.com...
that the SpamHarvest bots seem to harvest emails and then REMOVE words like:
SPAM
REMOVE
THIS
NOSPAM
before adding the names to their "fresh" list of email addresses to sell.
but if they remove SPAM from SPAM@example.com, they are left with.....
@example.com
which should be undeliverable.
so if your email is SPAM@example.com, you should get email from your friends, but my extensive use of that username on USENET has shown me that it does in fact work! I received only ONE spam email to that address in the past year of using it.
getting back On Topic for a minute, see if you can "disable" the "catchall" or "*" email function at some point. While I have not been hit with a dictionary attack, its obvious from the other posters that it is not uncommon. If you can route all non-assigned usernames to null when you discover this to be a problem, you will save yourself some headaches.
wouldn't that be ironic if Apple had a pallet of dead/destroyed/unrepairable iPods and they sent them all in to Dell?
I wonder how much money Dell loses when it sells a DJ Jukebox for $100?
I know if *I* was running Apple, I'd certainly try to take advantage of this fabulous offer!
maybe OT, but even my LIBRARY has free WiFi now
on
WiFi Gone Wild
·
· Score: 1
Evanston Public Library Free WiFi, no strings attached, they have a pamphlet in the lobby about how to use it.
No WEP, nothing. BYOL
I always war-drive when travelling, but that can get tiring and also impractical on the Interstate, so I'll stop at a Flyin' J's Truck Stop with WiFi over some other place.
I like the previous comments about "WiFi is the next bathroom".
I recently helped a friend setup her new SBC DSL which came with a 2Wire WAP.
It was encrypted out of the box with a default password which was linked to the serial number on the unit!
She did not like the long string of numbers though and we tried to change the WEP to something else, but were told it could only be a set of 10 numbers. (well, maybe it can be changed, but I didn't spend much time mucking with it...)
So, on one hand- hurrah that it was encrypted out of the box!
on the other hand, she had me disable encryption entirely..(but hide the SSID) so when the kids come over with their laptops they can get on Mom's interweb connection easier.
We're correcting our post from earlier today about a $50 ipod clone from Microsoft. Basically, it looks like the Denver Post got it really, really wrong when they published this yesterday....
"While I'm sure it's hard studying something that by definition you can never experience, measure..."
actually it can be measured.
several years ago I was watching a documentary on some Antarctic geologists or something and they made a tunnel under the surface to "x" depth so they could look at the layers of ice and what they contained and over how many years the span was. I don't know why they didn't just use core samples, maybe they did the tunnel for the documentary so they could bring the camera in?
I don't know, anyways- The guy with the goggle and frozen beard was explaining what all the various strata meant in the ice wall we were looking at. It was fairly mundane until he pointed out one section that, based on the information he had provided earlier, showed rather obviously that SOMETHING had happened to cause a dramatic climate shift to another "ice age" in a period of JUST 50 years.
He didn't speculate on what caused it, but noted that it was possible as it had happened in the past and we were now staring at the evidence.
That's all I got for my science, some some documentary on the Discovery Channel.
while recently driving through Nebraska, I decided to try out Flyin J's Wi-Fi Hotspots. Apparently they had some agreement with TonServices for WiFi and also some other Truck Stops had joined in as "extended services"
So I stop at one of the "Extended" Services places, a Bosselman truck stop that was listed on the Website's MAP as having WiFi, but no matter where I drive around the parking lot, I got nothing. No signal. So I get some gas and then go into the place and ask the only person there if they know anything about how to use their WiFi Internet.
"What Internet?" was the response.
"there's no Internet here"
later in the week I get an email from someone at TonServices saying they were "having problems" with that location.
using Safari to connect to real.com in Mac OS X, I get the main REAL splash page and a link in the upper right hand corner that says: "Free RealOne Player".
That link takes you directly to the no muss no fuss signup page.
Of course, you still have to ignore the gigantic "Free Download" button on the Front page.....
Since I watch the Screensavers I usually go to the Screensavers website and look up stuff in the show notes. Sometimes months later... There's alot of good info in there.
/starts downloading the entire TechTV website.....
...Their example they show a Windows PC, what do you use on your Mac or Linux machines to post images automatically?
the TextAmerica site from the article works fine with my Mac once I set up an account. I just send an email with an attached file to the email address they provided and it appears on the website ready to go.
however- after reading the TOS above about them "owning" all the content, I think I may not use the service.
some of you are familiar with the SMART car, it's not really available in the USA, but it's all over Europe. It's pretty disposable, they already have an "end of life" program for them.
These things are highly desireable in the US partly because they are not available, a friend bought a rolling SMART chassis (no drivetrain) off eBay from the now-defunct eMotion. He has since purchased all the other bits (engine, drivetrain, etc) and is now trying to put it together but he's stumped because he cannot get the SEVEN computers to talk to each other. He is no stranger to working on cars either. And once he screws it up, he can't exactly take it in to a "dealer" either since both he AND the car are in the US.
Why would Glaser attempt negotiations via an email and a "leaked" version of the email?
Does he think that he will "win" either way?
Apple and REAL apparently tried some sort of an agreement a couple of years ago, but it fell through because REAL wanted access to all Apple's QT code, but would not give up any of the REALplayer code to Apple.
It appears he is just looking for ANY publicity at all for REAL.
But of course, there is no such thing as "bad" publicity!
"...More important, everybody selling to home users -- Microsoft, hardware manufacturers, software developers and retailers -- needs to do a better job of informing customers of the risks and potential problems of Internet access."

I practiced and practiced hoping she would notice me and became the Second Best Typist in that Class!
of course, the story ends typically: Did Not Impress Girl.
oh well, at least I can hold my own in a chat room without those stupid abbreviations.....
I look down my nose at all those who make more money than me that can only "hunt and peck".
*sigh* I don't know...is the ability to Type a Gift or a Curse?
Connections up to 1 Mbps and per-day pricing options are also available."

I wish I could mod you up (I have mod status today...) but I chose to ask questions. thanks for taking the time to answer them.

how about the same one that has worked for them all this time:
Charge for listing an item
Charge again if it sells
I particularly enjoyed the part where Doc and Spidey fight so hard, they get knocked into Chicago and land on what appears to be the Red Line.
Now THATs a fight!
