  1. 1% is millions on Mozilla Gains on Internet Explorer · · Score: 1

Come on, lets not be pessimists here. That's a whole lot of people. A few percentage points more and business will not be able to ignore non-IE users. Do you want to be the guy telling your boss that 10% of your customers can't use the company website?

10% is doable and a realistic goal, possibly within a year.

On top of it all, Moz users simply don't have to deal with ActiveX and pop-ups thus lowering their chances of getting crapware on their machines. You bet their friends are going to notice.

Is it just me or is SP2 a big stopgap fix mainly for spyware and security? Considering the #1 WAN app is IE, it seems that this is directly or indirectly a response to Moz's success.

Well, if you're going to read mindless drivel like Clancey, you'll retain and absorb the same amount of "entertainment" information you'd get from a TV show or movie.

I think its fair to say that when people talk about reading they tend to mean books which challenge us, good fiction, smart non-fiction, etc not the best-sellers. Many best-sellers could easily be turned into movies or TV shows with little effort and I think this speaks volumes on how much of a TV-centric culture we have become.

There are lots of things that simply don't translate over well to entertainment media, its visual language or its idioms. Imagine a movie based on The Selfish Gene. You would retain so little of the points Dawkins is trying to make.

Your 'retainment' argument can be applied to anything really. Why go to college when you can simply skim the textbook, afterall you will only retain so much. In the end I think its up to the reader to find works that challenge or interest her. Then retention will then come naturally. Its also up to the reader to get off her ass and find a book club or lend her books out to friends if she wants to chat about them.

I like the ext version of Dune. Its especially good for people who are not familiar with the book. Sure, the narration could be better but I believe it keeps the story flowing instead of people looking around and saying "wtf" every ten minutes.

The added footage (30+ minutes if I remember correctly) fits in pretty well; its not sub-par in any way. It wasn't cut out because of quality, but because it makes the movie 2+ hours long.

Dune will always be a love it or hate it movie, but I'm sure more people would like it (or understand it) if they got to see the longer version with all the narration at the theater.

  6. Re:Scamming? on Best Buy Says Customers Not Always Right · · Score: 1

First off its very easy to unintentionally damage goods. Secondly, the extended warranty usually just doesn't extend the duration of the warranty, but its common to buy "anything that goes wrong" protection from retail stores like Best Buy.

If there's fraud here, its the retailer, not the customer. Also, if Best Buy believes they are dealing with a scammer they can refuse to replace the item. Instead, Best Buy complains about people buying sale items and trying to get the service they paid for.

  7. Re:Makes sense to me... on Best Buy Says Customers Not Always Right · · Score: 4, Insightful

No, those are two very different situations.

You negotiate and decide on a per job basis. In retail there is no such thing; the prices are set and you are welcome to buy the items (in general). If the store can't really sell at those prices and expects you to throw away that rebate slip, then they are lying to you about their prices.

At least you have the decency to admit "No, I can't take this job." A better analogy is you taking that "trouble job" and then screwing everyone over later.

  8. Scamming? on Best Buy Says Customers Not Always Right · · Score: 1

How is a static fry of a video card "scamming?" Umm, the extended service plans are expensive because they cover so many things. If your company is unable to fulfill its contract then it is performing fraud. Plain and simple.

Unfortunately, Best Buy is the kind of company where there is intra-store (departments) and inter-store competition and actually fulfilling that expensive service plan costs the department money, so shady managers screw with customers when they're trying to 'get ahead.'

This business method is just disgusting and makes shopping at places like Best Buy something of a gamble.

This article shows you how unethical this company is. Its one thing to get rid of trouble customers and another to blame customers for actually buying on sale items and mailing in their rebates. If Best Buy doesn't like this then they can stop offering these deals.

Man, can consumer protection be any more impotent?

  10. How is the first one nitpicking? on Spider-Man 2 Has Over 30 Mistakes · · Score: 1

Seriously. When Otto threw the car at Parker I assumed Otto figured out his secret identity. He didn't, it was just a mindless action shot.

Parker was his only contact to get to Spider-Man. Granted, in the process of rewrites and movie-making it may have been true that that Otto did figure it out (Oh, the only photographer is his exact same size!) but it was tossed for some reason or another.

This is a big mistake, because people like to be challenged when watching a movie. I like to guess at what's happening or will happen. Throwing a car at Parker is a big hint that Otto figured out his identity, instead the movie took the low-road of "lookee special effects!!"

Perhaps this story decision is a sign of the times.

That said, I saw this movie at home (shhh) and we just laughed at the cheesy and stoic "romance," and a few other things, but that was the only "nitpicking" thing I noticed and its a real flaw. Then again this wasn't a great movie to begin with and had a lot MST3K qualities to it.

Stuff in memory, stuff that is being used, etc or essentially 'your configuration and usage helps determine if you have to restart.'

That said, Windows needs a reboot every 30 days or so anyway to keep it running smoothly so it tends to work out. Especially on the server side. Trust me, you don't want to work with a Windows box that's been up for 100+ days. "Hey, why is all the RAM used up? Nothing is running."
