I know what my other devices use, Im specifically talking about the Wii. 11 watts at idle is inexcusable. The default is enable wiiconnect24. Joe Sixpack isnt going to know to turn it off. There are millions of these things sitting around not be used but draining energy off the grid. Someday people will take 'vampire drains' seriously, but unfortunatley they dont. Saying "well Tivo is worse" isnt a solution. Two wrongs dont make a right.

Think about it this way. If I play 5-10 hours a week, how much more energy am I wasting just keeping it plugged in? Lets not trivialize 11 watts of constant drain. Its pretty serious.

Exactly. i played with an XO for the first time about three months ago and as I held it I thought "Why isnt this thing in the form factor of an e-book?" So much real estate is wasted on trying to make it a general purpose computer. Kids, in real life, wont be hacking code 90% of the time, they'll be reading ebooks for their studies. This form factor is a lot smarter for how these students are actually going to use them.

Heck, Im still pissed there's no affordable e-book reader out there. I already have a couple of nice laptops and a nice desktop. I dont need another machine, but I would love a cheap (sub 150 dollar) e-book reader that accepted all sorts of formats and was easy on the eyes. I dont know why sony and amazon think the price point for these things is 300+ dollars. It 99 dollars or less. If the XO people do this it will be pretty revolutionary.

The wii uses 11 watts of power at standby by default because of the WiiConnect24 feature. Nintendo designed it so it it checks in with wifi while 'off' for updates and other tasks. This right here is a good example of bad engineering. Instead of turning this on selectively (or turned on by games that might need it), its on by default and it just eats up power. Its like leaving a new CFL bulb on 24/7. That might not seem like a lot but multiply that by the units sold and you're seeing one of the worst standby machines on the market.

I think if Negroponte ran a non-profit which gave away these devices he could dictate whatever configuration he wanted, but considering the government is the buyer then they have a right to ask for what they want. They also may have other needs than just usability. Perhaps they have some win32 software that theyve developed that they want to run on these things.

I know its unfashioable to say on slashdot, but the customer's wants should be valid. The elitist "we know better, so fuck off" attitude is why OSS is marginalized as it is.

I can see organizations like Second Life stepping up to this challenge by investing some man-hours into setting up a server for NASA. Heck, they could even use the same client and just change the branding. This would be a huge advertising opportunity for them. NASA could then hire people to create the content using SL's tools. If it turns out that no one wants to play this mmo, then its no big loss.
