Windowsupdate is the offical service to update Windows.
All versions of windows use this service.
If Windowsupdate sends out a bogus patch, millions of machines install the patch.
See where this is going? WindowsUpdate could easily be utalized to infect millions of machines with a virus. It could also bug out and send a patch that breaks millions of machines.
This service should *NOT* be sending out mysterious patches that no one knew anything about.
That is an oversimplification of the issue. It is almost the same as saying 'all good webpages should be good'. Well of course. But what defines good? Similarly, what defines making content easily available? The answer is not as trivial as you might think. And the definition keeps changing, because both people and the technology they use keep changing.
Maybe, maybe not.
It is true that Google replaced Yahoo as THE search engine.
It could well have succeded because it lacks all that crap on the front page.
We're not gay, not that theres anything wrong with that!
This really isn't that clever, all this does is check the URL against their cgi script.
Kind of stupid, and the patch isn't really that "open"
obviously he wasn't there, because he would have noticed the diffrence between 'make' and 'maek'.
And the lack of tons of lines of code running through the screen.
Um, if his idea came true, playing games.
Not nessicarily, he's just non-petty.
None of the wars were either, but this is all "Stuff that matters" wouldn't you say?
He didn't say Christianity. Way to speculate.
I've never created a resume (yet.)
You can put Open Source projects you work on in your spare time on a resume?

If someone gained access to that server.. what if they sent out a virus disguised as a patch? I bet more people patch rather than don't patch
At least this was just a "glitch"
What version of IE? IE6 crashed so damn much even my family began to bitch about it it, and they think desktop shortcuts slow a computer down.
Now they use Mozilla 1.4 and i think it's crashed once in about 4 months, IE6 would *LITERALLY* crash every 3rd website they opened.
You just linked to a free geocities site on Slashdot.
Oddly, i never saw the word "gentoo" mentioned in ANYTHING i read about this update. They only said "a public rsync server".
It must have been this exploit, though.
For some reason i don't think they'll go after Redhat.
Just because they've moved away from free distros.
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO
ARG, the last thing i want is having my dual boot* system's having their Linux partiton wiped out if they get hacked under windows.
* Please dont kill me, i only have windows on them for my family, they complain too much about linux. I'll ease them onto it.
Except FTP is for Server \ Client tranfers
BitTorrent is for splitting up the load between many machines. ( aka P2P )

One reason for using a rootkit is to hide up what exploit you used. Especially if its an undocumented one.
I would say you could easily determine Slashdotter's overall prefrences on issues by how the editors by and large feel.
After all, who sticks around a site that constantly pisses them off?
The B in BIOS stands for BASIC.
Does anyone have a list of what motherboards use Phenoix BIOS? I'm going to put a compuer together soon, and i want to know which to avoid.
We're not just commies, we're TERORRISTS!
