    What sound system does Windows Subsystem for Linux? Will I get audio from Firefox if I use the Linux binary on Windows 10?

    Ideally the Mozilla people should reduce maintenance by stripping out as much Linux-specific code as possible. If that means depending on winelib instead of pulseaudio then so be it - the Win64 code will have been battle-tested by millions more users under Windows that any esoteric PulseAudio corner case that seems to perplex the ALSA-only crowd.

    (The last thing I want is paulseaudio and systemd infecting my Windows 10 box!)

    Kubrick was such a perfectionist, I'm surprised he didn't just reshoot the scene.

    Although counter-conspiracists might point to such imperfections in the screenplay as evidence that the landing wasn't faked.

    Asus are now manufacturing Atom-based devices running Windows 10 with detachable keyboards. i.e. a poor man's Surface 3.

    Albeit they cost 50% than the equivalent non-touchscreen HP Stream 'netbooks'.

    But not just the web - a lot of content is formatted for print and that requires viewing an A4 page in portrait. One of my textbooks retails for $AU250 but can be purchased online for a quarter of the price as a ebook. My laptop is useless for reading it so, I plug in my trusty 1024x1280 19" monitor (rotated, of course)

    Landscape is good for movies, speadsheets and IDEs such as Eclipse that tack on sidebars. Documents, not so much.

    Here in Victoria we had a coastal rock formation which the Europeans prophetically named "London Bridge". It was a tourist attraction for many a year until, as the song goes, it fell down.

    Nearby along the ocean road there are the "12 Apostles" but I think they're down to 7 or 8 of them now.

    Which is what I miss from Firefox OS. Traditional web pages blend seamlessly and there's no 'native' toolkit layer to get in the way.

  11. That model looks generationally underspecced (512MB) to run a modern OS.
    e.g. when MS promised to upgrade all the 8.x Lumias to Windows 10, they revised that to only ones with a gig of RAM.
    To that extent, maybe upgrading isn't advisable.

  12. What version of Android are you using?
    Lineage OS (nougat) has a feature called privacy guard that explicitly asks you when an app wants to access resources.

  13. I guess that's one of the strengths and weaknesses of Android.
    You no longer get vendor updates after a year or so but the community help out.

    I use a 4 year old handset with a new battery. Thanks to Lineage OS it runs the latest Android as smoothly as it ever did.

    A current-gen Core i3-7100U costs ($281.00) more than this laptop.

    But Braswell is kinda old by now, superceded by Apollo Lake.

    Plus the ability to write on the screen in tablet mode makes it very easy to email mathematical working and diagrams to professors which is really useful for subjects like physics.

    Darn tooting. Just this week Tim Cook was asked to defend why one couldn't buy a macBook with a detachable keyboard, touch-screen and Pencil.

    if I had a grand to piss up against a wall then a Surface Pro 4 running WSL would be tempting.

    I thought the idea was to introduce a premium device on which Google employees would develop Chrome OS. That it was sold to the general public was incidental.
