I completely agree with you about that movie. I don't know how they managed to mess it up so badly; the short story was fantastic, with some scenes that would be amazing in (good) cinema. All it would really need is to be extended for a movie. If they got the right cinematographer, imagine what the grimy underworld of a Gibson city would look like, or the Killing Floor where Molly fights.

  3. Re:Don't pity me on France National Library Attacks Google Book Effort · · Score: 1

I kind of disagree. I think that you're really missing something if you only speak one language. It's certainly not necessary to learn more than one, but going all your life without immersing yourself in another culture would be kind of a waste. It can be frustrating at times, but living in a non-native language really makes your brain work differently (in a good way).

Although, if you're not going to travel outside of the US, you're probably right. For people who live in the English-speaking parts of North America, it's much more difficult than it is for Europeans.

I take it you haven't used both of them. Speaking of the hardware (and there's really nothing very good software-wise on either at the moment):

DS: Crappy-looking screens that are pretty much the same as the one on the GBA SP. Expect washed-out colours all the time. Using the stylus to control most games is iffy at best.
PSP: Beautiful, huge screen, and better graphics as well. Controls are natural, and the system feels pretty good in your hands.

If Sony gets the quality problems fixed, I know which one I want. The DS just doesn't cut it for me; the hardware isn't good enough to justify replacing my GBA SP.

Yes, and if I read books instead of writing them, I'm part of the ignorant masses, right? Same goes for listening to music instead of playing it.

My point is, in any given field, there's going to be a lot more consumers than creators. This is natural, and it's no reason to take on such an elitist air. Just because you would rather mess around with a game instead of playing it doesn't mean you're above people whose talents/interests lie in other areas.

Oh. I didn't realize that those games I'd been playing for years are for uneducated people. Does this mean I should go find some GPL'd software and start tinkering when all I want to do is play a video game?

I don't usually flame on Slashdot, but you come off as a complete prick. Normal people do not care about tinkering with a game, they'd rather spend their time playing it. If you think that makes them "uneducated" or dumb, then you're a bigger jackass than I thought.

First, I'd like to tell off the people who have problems with RE's controls. They're not as difficult as everyone claims, and they're likely the best available with the cinematic camera angles used in the games (until RE 4).

Anyway, I have RE4, and the controls are fantastic. They're pretty similar to the old ones, but much more action-oriented and faster to use. The aiming in particular is very natural, and all the times I've died, I've never felt it was the fault of the controls/camera. One of my only complaints is that the game somewhat abandons a decent story and horror for the new focus on action. However, the new combat system is so fun that it barely matters. :)

There's going to be a lot of times where the person you're speaking to won't understand your native language, and you'll just have to make do. The more practice you have, the better you'll be prepared for this situation.

Besides, do you really think the students should be talking in English at a Japanese language school? Once they've learned the basics, they should be making an effort to talk in Japanese.
