Of course, you're lying, and this story has fuck all to do with a decision to come to the US you may or may not have actually made, but it's funny that you'd choose to say the same retarded shit that pops up immediately in these conversations.
Me lying? See Most of the time I booked my holidays a couple of days before taking them. I never know, a big project could force me to stay home.
I simply browse the web and I try to find a place I can afford. Strictly nothing planned. I have been in southern asia, eastern europe, middle east, etc. There are certainly places I'd like to visit in the states but there are also a lot of things outside of it.
I take holidays one time per year, it means if somebody ruins them like:
did you know that the grand grand uncle you have never seen was suspected of Nazi collaboration by the US army in the WWII?
tell us more about your friend Mohammed?
Your record shown that you have spend a night at the police jail when you were 18)
I'm screwed. I'm the kind of guy looking for the less paper (I'm busy like hell, businessowner) and the most flexible destinations. With such measures and their state of mind (welcome you potential terrorist!) they are out of my radar until they change their mind.
I would be doing background checks on everybody I hire.
Being a business owner, this is a thing I will never do. I'm not the police. If you aren't in prison it means you have either paid for your crime or you didn't commit any. But I agree such background checks are needed for people working with children.
Yeah:-) it's 3 hours away from my home, Brussels (thanks to the Eurostar) and London is one of my favorite cities:-). I have already visited twice this winter:-)
When I select a destination for my holidays, I browse my favorite web sites, select the destination, pays and that's it. All I need is my passport if I travel outside the EU. And even outside of it, a lot of countries only need my ID card (Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, Morocco and dozens of others).
I'm simply not used to such a procedure. I'm not used to give my private data to a foreign state. I don't like it. (granted if my business requires it, I will do it).
Okay I'm just a tourist but some developed countries make some of their biggest incomes out of it (Spain, France, Italy, etc.). With so many harassment you feel quite insecure (feeling like they could stop you at the airport and ruin your holidays for ludicrous reasons).
Try developing software for some company in some country whose language is different,
I had this experience. We were working with a Greek company. They did a quite remarkable financial web based application (java applets). 2003 I think.
Everything worked like a charm in Athens...I installed it on my computer it worked too (I had to install greek fonts previously). Then back here in Brussels, we started some life demo in our customer office. It was the nightmare of my life. I was in front of all those guys and java kept crashing for non reason while initializing the applet. The presentation was cancelled.
After days of debugging we finally found why, the piece of software was extremely verbose while running...And every single sentences was in Greek Alphabets. These characters were unsupported on a "latin" based Windows XP computer and it led to a crash.
I would not hire a programmer without a code example
This is precisely what I do. I ask them to come with their USB key and to show me a piece of their code. It can be anything they wish I don't mind. I ask them to comment it. I won't say you don't need resume, but it is quite difficult to lie in front of your own code. Of course you think that they could come with somebody else code, but well it works until now.
It also helps me to spot those with bad habits, like no comment, non meaninful variables, method, classes names, etc. They might be great coder, but they would be terrible inside a team.
Well being European I would find it quite laughable to see the US president using an European plane for his official travels.
What truly matters IMHO is the symbol. A politician has to promote his national industry, European are already in charged of their own products and they don't need any help:-)
Why can't they wait a little bit more for the next Boeing dreamliner or if they need so much space why can't they use the last 747 (upgraded) version?
Speaking as an engineer I would NEVER do that. I would charge the time spent reading manuals to work, even if that meant $75 an hour overtime. You only get 80 years of life, half of which is already over.
Speaking as another engineer (computer engineer) if I didn't spend time to document myself and learn new technologies by myself, I would be jobless and sleeping under a bridge by now, my first job (mid 90's) has been replaced by some kind of a script or server-side program by now.
It all depends of your sector IMHO, mine is a moving target, if you don't know the last technogocial trend, you are a deadman walking. And it also helps me to move from a relatively low paid job to a higher and more lucrative one.
Granted my private life used to suck, but after around 15 years of hard works, it looks like I have finally reached a form of stability, no financial worry and a desire to have a family..And happiness, I'm happy:-).
I wasn't particularly good at university, I know I'm the average Joe, no wealthy family behind me, no social network, my only real advantage used to be my ability to work hard and to take insane risks and sometimes paying back for years.
Now I manage a company, some employees are definitely smarter than me. But They are employees. I'm a the sole shareholder. It all depends of your goal.
In my case, Knowledge is "an investment". hard work pays.
Maybe not a spam but It looks so cheap. It Looks like Lexus needs to make money out of everything just like a low cost airline. I have never liked this brand, now I know why.
I did install their JavaFX plugin, first I watched a video from the marketing department. A popup appeared telling me that an application was about to be downloaded Ok or cancel, it was signed and verified, I click OK.
Then I moved to the demo site...I click on one of their demo, again a popup appeared with the same warning and OK or Cancel.
My question is, does this popup message appears every single time you browse a new javaFx app?
Looks like JavaFX plans to make money with certified signatures. (not the first time I see this business model with SUN, I remember J2ME and their certified mobile application). Sorry guys even if your technology is interesting, I won't enter into such a business model...It is a total no go for end user (quite disturbing) and pretty scary for developers like me who are supposed to pay their roylaties each time they dare to release a new web app. Find another way to make money.
Javascript can't.
The biggest problem imho is animation and vectors. You can't really use formats like SVG which is poorly supported by most browsers (if not all). So if you plan a 100% javascript+html+css, you have to stick to bitmap sprites and even there, there are some issues (slow, browser compatibility, etc.).
Depends of the job...See CPAN for example and all modules available. If you need OOP, don't use Perl, if you need to glue quickly few modules, Perl is still my favorite.
Who's considering them obsolete? I still play with 2003 video games. I'm a big fan of those "classic" games as they call it. I'm not ready to spend +$50 per game nor do I plane to play them on anything than my cheap laptop. Budget? less than $10 per game.
The result? There are usually 10 titles available for that budget in the biggest store of my city. And most of them were had bad review on the release (somes I haven't ever heard of). You have to be lucky to find one with a good review.
Let's take Halo for example. Is Halo 1 or Halo 2 impossible to sell nowadays? I seriously doubt so.
I can buy old movies for $5. When I say old...it is usually 90's movies. But there are some pretty good ones.
They miss sales...Just like they did when they refused to sell arcade games (abandonware) and fans released their own version. And then they rushed to take that market back. They are poor "asset managers", very bad ones.
Please note that Fallout is just an example for why games are a - in my opinion surprisingly tiny - amount more expensive today, i don't really want to discuss the game itself or how it compares to its predecessors.
Movies too, but you don't hear hollywood producers complaining about the cost each time they release their new movie.
The irritating thing about the video game industry is that they make more money than the movie industry and they keep complaining. When you have such an amount of revenues and you still have difficulties to keep the whole thing afloat, the real issue is the management.
Well I had a large project (server) under mono few months ago and Mono + monodevelop did the trick. But of course if you want "linux programming" you would be slightly disappointed:-), it looks so much like windows;-).
The problem I had were the weak winform port for the rest...And few problems while marshalling across platefom...For the rest well it works.
Grammar check is rather poor in French (yeah I know but the whole planet doesn't speak English yet).
Weird problems with MS office for mac (and my main clients are communication agencies working almost exclusively with Apple), mainly spreadsheet and doc forms.
If you receive files in the last MS office format, you are screwed (or you need to use somekind of a automatic convertor, doesn't work well each time).
Some problems with numbering styles (1.1 subchapter, 1.1.1 sub-sub chapter, etc).
I don't complain, I saved money thanks to it, but I'm no fanboy either and I don't care about all opensource politic/idealism/whatever. This is businness. I can easily understand why some people prefer to stick to MS Office. If licenses costs weren't such an issue for my company, I would migrate to MS office.
Same for me but I didn't left the entrepreneurship. When you have no diploma, beeing self employed is an option worth considering. It usually takes more time to get decent earnings (the first years are extremely difficult). But now after 11 years, I truly enjoy being the owner of a small web development company.
In those days I would rather advice taking a self employed activity as a second job and make it your primary job once you've got enough clients and turnover.
I guess the algorithm is linked in a way or another to a clock (time)...If they point to a atomic clock sync, isn't possible to spoof the IP (or change locally domain name config) and then to trace the next domain name?
Arguably, the reason the EU was brought into existence was to compete with the US. There's a lot of pride tied into making this thing work.
The whole world doesn't resolve around the USA you know...The first coal & steel treaty was aimed at creating friendship amongst western European countries. The goal of the founding father was basically trade is the best tool to prevent any further misunderstanding leading to a bloody war. There were no form of pride...Just the fear of a third collective suicide on the European continent.
Switzerland isn't part of the EU.
Most Scientists don't give a damn about nationalist pride...What matters to them is knowledge and too often their own personal interests (publication, reputation, etc)
CERN is run by scientists, not politicians.
"God particles" is a term used by reporters, not politicians as far as I know.
Maybe. probably not. UTF-8 and other language facilitating garbage really divides the whole world further and harder.
Well I'm maybe wrong but I think those characters existed prior to UTF-8. For those of us who have to deal with middle east characters, turkish or nordic ones (names and surnames) in a single database, UTF-8 is the only sane option.
Lets all agree on a 7-bit character set and a single language before it's too late. You have been warned.
And let me guess...That's your native tongue, right?:-)
American scientists are a major contribution to the LHC:
1200 physicists from 90 American universities and laboratories have joined with scientific colleagues from around the world to collaborate in LHC experiments at the horizon of discovery.
Well, sorry to be so ignorant but How does the hacker place his piece of HTML code into the HTML code of the bank web site?
As far as I know :
An army of Penguins came to my mind.

As a potential Johnny foreigner, I will spend my hard won Euros somewhere else.

Actually Berlusconi IS with the mafia.
Well I really don't know if he has such a link, but the thing I know for sure is that he is a shame for Italy and now for the whole Western Europe.
I work with openoffice only.
So here are a couple of things:
I don't complain, I saved money thanks to it, but I'm no fanboy either and I don't care about all opensource politic/idealism/whatever. This is businness.
