  1. Who looks at the domain anyhow? on Spammers Moving To Disposable Domains · · Score: 1

It's been 3 years or so since I've been in the business of killing spam, but I recall never EVER caring about the domain name that is so easily forged anyhow. I only ever cared about IP addresses. I even wrote some nifty stuff to analyze my SA logs that once an IP had sent me a configurable amount of spam over a configurable score, that I added the IP to my blocklist and wouldn't allow it to even connect to my server. If I saw enough junk from the same subnet, the whole subnet would eventually be blocked. There was also a timeout on these entries, but they became progressively longer the each time they were re-added to the list.

No, it would not. It would be nice to see downloadable content of the evolution of the Beatles' music. I'm tired of games that supporting DLC releasing add-on discs that force you to completely change discs to play music from these collections when the core game is *exactly* the same. Guitar Hero, Singstar, I'm looking at you here! Kudos to Rock Band 2's ability to import in the songs of the previous games. Here's hoping that the Beatles are no exception.

Wrong, wrong, double wrong. Check the smog indicator on the sticker. Owning both an '05 conventional Civic, and an '07 Civic Hybrid, I can tell you (IIRC) the EPA smog rating on the conventional car is a .39, where the Hybrid clocks in at .09. I'd say that's significantly less. The Civic Hybrid is in fact also designated as a PZEV-AT vehicle.

The biggest problem with hybrids (particularly the plug-in types that put extra strain on the batteries) is that the eco-freaks fail to consider the environmental costs of replacing the car's battery every 2-5 years.
That's really not true. The U.S. Department of Energy performed a study of 3 different models of hybrid over a 160,000 mile span. http://avt.inel.gov/pdf/hev/end_of_life_test_1.pdf

    To summarize the article:

    * None of the battery systems failed completely.
    * All of the battery systems suffered reduced capacity.
    * None of the fuel economies of each car suffered meaningfully.

Really? My Civic Hybrid, and pretty much every other hybrid, begs to differ. Last I checked, I don't have ultracaps in my car, and it uses regenerative braking energy. Hell, the EV1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EV1#Technology) did too, with both lead acid and NiMH batteries.

Basically pixels that you knew should be a certain color, but weren't, or were even flickering between colors on a stationary screen. (I.E. the main Wii Menu) Nintendo gets a 9 of 10 though on the replacement process. Moved my Virtual Console games and Mii's to the new system and everything. The only downside is that since Nintendo technically created the new Mii's, I now can't edit them. I've contemplated blowing them up and recreating, but then I'd lose all my Wii Sports stuff. Oh well, nothing's perfect :-)

I didn't say it was a bad idea to have a phone box with a battery backup. I take issue with their idiot salespeople telling people that battery backups means it will keep working when the power goes out. That battery backup means it might continue working. If the whole neighborhood goes down then odds are it won't continue working.
We're mandated by the FCC to inform the customer of that possibility and that if it happens, there's no 911 service. All non-traditional providers fall under this mandate, so if they aren't telling you this... they're in violation. This is why on Vonage commercials now, you'll notice the tiny print at the bottom of the screen that says "Vonage 911 works differently than traditional 911..." However, we don't usually mention this until people are signing up, so I wouldn't expect a telemarketer to mention this either.
  15. Re:Cable is secure on Comcast Lying About Vonage · · Score: 1

Not all cable providers are "in the dark" if the power goes out. I work for a cable provider, and we have battery backups at every one of our power supplies that will last us 4 hours. This gives us plenty of time to get crews out to downed supplies to put generators on them until the utility power comes back.

  16. Re:Vonage isn't secure on Comcast Lying About Vonage · · Score: 1

Not only that, but it goes over the Internet proper, rather than through private networks linked together. Most cable solutions (at least PacketCable ones anyway) connect the cable provider directly to the PSTN or to their partner that connects to the PSTN rather than going out over the Internet. This means the cable provider controls your VoIP traffic from end to end, and can guarantee call quality where with Vonage, it's impossible to do that.

They're then notified that *something* is wrong, and they need to look at it. If it isn't fixed, we usually call them then. If they continue to ignore the problem, they're disconnected until we can look at the computer. At that point, it's a willful TOS violation for spamming, even if they aren't the real spammer since the messages are coming from their machine.

  25. Re:Matters of opinion. on Apple Switching to Intel · · Score: 1

You've made very good points. I think the only thing I'd really disagree with is lumping Solaris, BeOS and NeXT in with Apple. The difference there is that Apple has much bigger following and more importantly is far more recognizable in the mainstream. I think I'll slightly retract my original thought about not allowing installs on any hardware only to the point that they should get it SOLID on their own hardware first, and once they've done that, then start getting other hardware to work. Drivers are drivers. MS has proved this isn't a huge obstacle to overcome, but it may take some time to get it right. In the mean time, people who want to pay the premium for Apple hardware do so and get a definitely reliable box. For those who don't want to shell out the coin for a brand new box, at least they have an (albeit unsupported by Apple) option to use MacOS on any box they see fit. I could see the Mac community EASILY rally to this cause to evangelize their OS and help support anyone trying to do it much like Linux users do. Once MacOS becomes more prevalent on Non-Apple boxes, (a few years down the road) hardware developers would be pretty much forced to write Mac drivers for everything they create or risk losing a significant segment of the market.

I just think the opportunity to turn a Windows box into a MacOS box with nothing more than a software load is too big of an opportunity to pass up. It is worth the development effort to get a driver database set up to see people begin to flock to your OS. Pardon the pun, but MS right now is an apple ripe for the picking. People are fed up with spyware/virueses/trojans clogging up their systems so easily. They want to switch. You need only look at the growth of Firefox to see that once users have had enough crap and a viable alternative exists, they use it. But if you want them to switch, you can't throw up artificial barriers to doing so. Humans naturally take the path of least resistance. The more difficult you make it for someone to switch, the less likely they will.
