Ok... I'm happy for the record companies to have a choice, either:
A: I buy a DVD, and I own it... I can copy it, put it on my hard drive and if I lose it I have to buy a new one. B: I buy the rights to play the DVD... I can't copy it, however if I lose it I can walk into a store and take another one free.
Seems reasonable to me...
Wait... there is one flaw in my plan, just one word. I'm sure you can guess which one it is.
If I ever get nabbed for some stupid DMCA law, I'm going to very publicly sell my several thousand dollars of purchased DVDs to pay for some of my defence.
1. Assume you know the development time T of the project 2. Realise the actual time is actually 1.87*T 3. Press the start button 4. Wait for the system to reach steady state 5. You now have the value of T 6. If the system never reaches steady state, you know realise that wasting time estimating how long this will take, is what makes them take longer.
Once, whilst walking through town, I was approached by a cheap crook who demanded I give him all my money. I insisted that I not, and managed to make an escape.
Later I managed to find out where he lived, so I broke into his house and stole his plasma TV (rich bastard).
I went to the police later and told them the story, and we laughed together at how justice had been done.
I've worked in the IT department at an Australian University, and it's the hot air radiating from academic kiddies fighting in the sandbox that cause the problems.
Neither have static IP addresses in most cases, Cable may be more likely to hold an IP lease longer, but it is basically dependant on the stability of the connection and the lease times the ISP gives out.
Alot of ISPs in Australia also offer sticky IP (== long lease time), makes traking naughty customers easier. I'm sure the US providers do this as well.
If a DSL customer has 10 times as many IP addresses as a Cable customer in a month, that's a reflection of the ADSL quality - rather than anything else.

Can't imagine any end-user going "Oh, well, I'll download Firefox then, no problem."
Exactly - especially when we have spent years educating them NOT to download strange programs off unknown websites.
"In principle solar panels could be produced very cheaply and they really could meet all of our energy demands."
Two comments here... 1. Not a chance solar panels in their current technology could meet 1% of our entire energy needs and 2. Did you know what crap and environmentally unfriendly energy is required to make a solar panel:)
Nuclear needs to keep us going for only 30-40 years before we works something else out.
Simple answer - you can't be addicted to WoW, because it isn't addictive.
Long answer - what you are addicted to is excitement, socialising, power, money etc. An 18 year old male teenager can very quickly determine if he is addicted... offer him sex, if he accepts then he isn't addicted.
Very soon a balance will be reached, where you lose your job and can't pay the WoW fees any more.
That's when you will realise you were not addicted, just merely foolish.
I'd say that the bulk of informed people find the whole proposal to be ridiculous.
The uninformed will think it's bad to stop them getting porn, the informed will know it's not possible.
So we are covered, only the stupid suggest these sort of things.

I think that will make the point...

Shouldn't you have raped him ?
Use the analogue computing method.

I'm not sure about everywhere else ... but isn't pretending to be or impersonating a police officer somewhat illegal.
Now whilst the rest of it was entertaining, doesn't this really compare to fighting spam by spamming the author ?
Anyway - was entertaining reading, if somewhat on morally dubious grounds.
Split the friggin' internet in half.
Give out odd numbered IP addresses to Linux users, and even numbered addresses to Windows Users.
Then Linux computers just turn off access from even numbered source addresses.
Problem solved.
Ok - time for bed.

Time for a new slashdot category, with a picture of Dr Phil.
And an option to filter it out.
"A huge number of people would suddenly get a lot less spam"
A huge member of people would suddenly loose a lot more sperm ?
Well 18 year old girls seem to need breast implants, so why not 18 yr old boys needing viagra ?
Is it a co-incidence that Bill could do this as well as a Bill ?

:)
Don't be silly, they only accept articles from people who know the combination.
Yes, Firefox crashes, hangs and aborts way more often than IE.
It's an unstable bastard.... but I still use it.
Why ?
I'd much prefer an old rust bucket holden I can lock, than a brand new merc someone can steal at a moment's notice.
Do what I'm doing, this Saturday - WoW is quitting me.

I'm nowhere as addictive to Wow as it is to me

I mean .... we should store all these people in big buidings, shove big hard problems in one end and see what comes out the other.
Stuff jail, send them to a big think tank, make em work for their crimes.
Well, seems GODADDY at least doesn't let EU registrations if you don't live in EU.

And you guys wonder why the rest of the world doesn't trust the US to run the internet
Tell me the above is a late April fools joke.

And for good reason: socialism exists in direct conflict with individual liberty.
