I picked up an xbox 360 (for $150 after rebate) specifically to get play l4D. I bought l4D brand new ($60). $210 to play the game (cheaper than getting a new PC to handle the game). I'm not the least bit irritated about the price differences or it dropping. It was worth it to me. Since then I've bought another 10-12 xbox games all used or severely discounted (Circuit City going out of business yay! even found discounted xbox live points). The amount of time spent playing the game made it worthwhile to me.
Eventually when I get a new PC that can run games in a windows vm (thinking mac pro), I'll probably pick up the pc version for the SDK/user generated maps. So yeah I'll agree initial prices are typically to high, but for a well crafted game that matches your tastes... For me it was worth it.
Have you seen the price of most American media for sale in South East Asia? Books that cost me 50 dollars cost the equivalent of 4-8 dollars. Why because their currency is "weaker" than ours. Well the USD is weaker than the Euro, means stuff is cheaper here. The shit cuts both ways.
THIS.
Seriously, I'm almost 100% against the death penalty but I believe in exceptions for those who hold government offices and betray the trust of those they are supposed to serve. I'm not sure if these Judges were Politicians (elected) or appointed, but if they were appointed who ever did it is also culpable.
Someone mod parent up please. I hate it when people try to claim WWII got us out of the depression. I mean should we be thankful we have the Afghan and Iraq war? If it weren't for those two wars, would the economy really be in the shitter? I think not.
"Add some kind of notepad software you can write notes quick and immediately send it out to another device/computer."
Um... if thats what you want, write a web app to do this (hell there probably already is one).
Provided it has the proper support for user input, this could be a really good mobile thin client. A custom browser than knows when you select the text input field it should pop up a box that interprets your handwriting and translates it.
oh yeah and cloud computing... just for the added 2.0 effect.
The headline meant netflix style rating for games. I was thinking "yes please". I'm sick of sites that seem to rank on a bell curve 1 through 5 where everything is a 3 (or a 7).
Anyone know of any sites that will take your personal rankings (like netflix) and correlate it to others rankings and recommend games?
Yes I know this is offtopic.. just trolling for a reccomendation.
It happens only when I am playing fallout and it happens every time I try to load the last saved game. It most certainly is not the dvd drive and is the game.
Its caused my Xbox 360 to lock up, requiring me to turn it off. Its very repeatable every time I try to load that saved game it locks up.
I think that is a pretty severe bug. Supposedly there is a work around involving resetting sytem memory. Although this means re-downloading patches for all other games (I think):
Go to the Xbox Dashboard, select the System Blade, and select Memory.
-Highlight the HD symbol and press Y.
- Press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X.
You purchase an item on Credit you're entering into an agreement to pay for something they are going to want to know your billing address so that they can verify payment. If you're that concerned about your privacy you need to not enter into such agreements and pay for everything with cash (which protects both sides).
As a side note isn't this potentially a good thing that they sent you an update? You can decide not to use it if you fear its updating drm as opposed to improving the product.
I don't follow this stuff, but if he had/has pancreatic cancer, my guess is he is dying. Pancreatic cancer is a bitch, I've seen two people die from it. I had an old boss who went from 200 lbs over weight to looking anorexic and managed to fight it for a couple years. I think by going on a some experimental special diet, but it still destroyed him.
I haven't heard of anyone getting better from pancreatic cancer.
The first few times through l4d scared me as much as any videogame has ever scared me. After many replays it loses that effect, but that is going to be true of anything. Watching the same horror movie 20 times is going numb you to it. Left for dead is definitely horror-based and the point is to survive. You can't just walk through the game.
nah... in EQ the zone would change depending on the time of day, or if quests were in various states of completion. Killing certain mobs would cause the zone to progress to another state and eventually it would recycle. I stopped mmorpgs before the instanced dungeon became prevalent. I just don't see that much has changed from eq to WOW in more than half a decade other than better graphics. I guess that makes me a troll *roar*.
L4D is absolutely amazing... I've pretty much stopped gaming in the last 10 years. Picked up an xbox 360 just for this title (and streaming netflix). Such an adrenaline rush.
I haven't played an MMORPG in over 6 years (played EQ on a pvp server for about 18 months before getting out with my life intact). A lot of the things listed above as innovative and new were in the original EQ (eg "arena challenges" with increasingly more difficult oponents, zones that were in "phases"). I'm just suprised such things are touted as "new."
So china is self correcting? (more pollution to offset the social pressures for male children?)

I don't know... on my last trip to the UK the only news coverage I saw consisted of two things:
1. the US election.
2. Some BBC Djs on air personalities, in a flap over a prank phone call.
Really not that different than the US news.
Really, someone spent the 4+ years getting a degree and they're not interested in it? I got the degree b/c I love doing what I do. It seems preposterous that someone would look down on that b/c they feel it *might* mean they're only in it for the money. Might I suggest you brush up on your interviewing skills? I should think you ought to be able to divine someone's true motivations with some decent interviewing.
I remember one year growing up the Oaks in my backyard didn't produce any acorns, instead they produced these strange green globes that were soft almost like a grape except more spherical and speckled. When I split one open there was something akin to what cotton wood trees put out or dandylions, a soft fluffy thing. I wonder if the Oaks have a secondary seed production mechanism? Is that what I saw? that was probably 20 years or more ago so the memory is a little hazy. I wonder if the oaks are producing those things? or nothing at all.
"Vegetarians playing the morality card are associating gruesome with cruel, and that's simply not the case when we're talking about execution methods. Sure, it looks ugly, but that doesn't mean it wasn't mostly painless."
I don't find the execution methods to be cruel (typically). Generally speaking they're pretty quick clean b/c that is the most expedient way. What I do find cruel and gruesome and is one of my biggest reasons for not eating meat is the way its raised. Not only is the way animals are raised cruel, I think its typically unsanitary and often environmentally unfriendly.
If I ever eat meat again, it will be something I killed myself (either hunted or even less likely raised).
You forgot Continuous Integration and automated testing. You should have forgotten CMM and ISO9000. Applying manufacturing standards like ISO 9000 to software development is not a good idea.
Can we mod this +10, so many people fail to understand this. You don't have to share any of your changes to GPL code, until you start sharing the binary. This seems to be lost on the majority of otherwise intelligent people.

you'll never run out of pistol ammo. That would make the game a bit more tricky/interesting if pistol ammo was a limited resource.

I see a teacher or school claiming this is their stance, I call bullshit. This has to be a lame attempt at trolling for support/blog hits.

That is hot, I really need to read at -1 more often.
