These two things are not conducive to tolerence of any form and are a major problem in society. If you're of such high intelligence stop producing "us" and "them" faction. I believe in evolution but I would not for a second think that I'm more intelligent than a friend believing in creationism. Futhermore there is little reason the two ideas can't coexist.

Normally Canon snobs at least acknowledge the existence of Nikon. Canon having the best digital cameras is hardly a fact or undisputed. Both Canon and Nikon make excellent cameras, and while I find that Canon's bodies are usually better than Nikon's the Nikon lenses are frequently better than Canon's.

I'd consider roads and sewer systems to still be more important to a society than the Internet. Of course the UN doesn't manage that public infrastructure and it's not that infrastructure that would be the target of censorship anyway. The UN has a scary tyranny of the majority problem that I fear would result in censorship of minority speech. You'd also find the UN a lot less receptive of the geek community. Remember how ICANN came down on Verisign after the geeks got all pissed off about sitefinder? Imagine trying to get your opinion across to the UN! Sure, criticize ICANN but they're doing a pretty good job considering what a great responsibility they've been entrusted with. Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

One of the XP power toys allows for multiple desktops.

I agree that linux holds superiorities to Windows. Hell, that's why I use it. But as I see it much of the problem is that drivers and software are still written towards only Windows. People are lucky if they even get Mac support. Some of the alternatives can accomplish the same goal but can also make it more difficult and fall short of more advanced features. The Gimp may rival Paint Shop Pro but not Photoshop. This is true for many 3D games too. It's difficult and expensive to develop software towards multiple platforms.

  21. Server OS on OpenBSD 3.7 Reviewed · · Score: 3, Interesting

OpenBSD is really more of a server OS. Sure you /can/ use it as a desktop, but there are better alternatives. I think its strongest point is how in /etc/rc.conf one can simply change say named_flags=N to named_flags="" (command arguments could go inside the quotes) and bam! BIND is up and running. Many of these services are available in /etc/rc.conf from the default install. Thus with OpenBSD it is possible to bring up a reliable and secure server fairly quickly.

  25. Support Steam on Top 20 Gaming Lows of 2004 · · Score: 5, Insightful

Bashing steam is so popular that it's difficult to find an article that is actually objective. Cutting out the publisher only makes sense. Most of the purchase money goes into their hands, and it seems unjustified. Most games today no longer contain pretty manuals, maps, or even jewel CD cases. The percentage valve actually makes off each retail purchase is surprisingly low. Broadband users, whose number and capabilities are always rising, are able to obtain games in a manner more conveniant by using Steam. Furthermore their games are kept up to date easily and they should theoretically be cheaper (due to a contract with VU this was not so for HL2). I'm not trying to say there haven't been difficulties in the Steam system thus far, but that's to be expected in the first years of such an ambitious idea. Support the idea of Steam.
