To be fair, I bet at least 20% of "Opera Crashes" involve musical related accidents.

  7. Re:No, they aren't on Apple Mulls Flat-Rate "Unlimited Music" Option · · Score: 1

DRM stops those rights I've reserved - I can't (practically) lend it to someone else to listen to and I can't format change it either. Plus I no longer own anything, I just "rent" it.

If you do become interested in downloading songs and music, you may want to look into Apple's iTunes Plus. Depending on the artist / record label, they offer their content in the iTunes Plus format, which is a higher bitrate than the regular downloads and... get this... DRM free. When you download it, the song is in AAC format, but you can convert the song easily to MP3 within iTunes. Browsing around the iTunes store, you'll sometimes see little [+] marks next to the price, indicating it's iTunes Plus format. According to the FAQ page, Plus is now regular price ($.99) for individual tracks and for albums.

Granted, there's not a huge advantage to purchasing songs through iTunes rather than buying CDs, but should you find yourself needing to purchase a single song and don't want cumbersome DRM or lock-in, give iTunes Plus a shot. I still buy CDs, too, but Plus can be a good way to get just the songs I want.

Final Fantasy is coming to the Wii. Though in the form of Crystal Chronicles, which suffered from GBA connectivity for the Gamecube. Hopefully this version doesn't require four Nintendo DS's and four link cables to play four player.

Suffered? Using the Gameboy Advances helped the game out immensely. The screen could be used just for action and menus and item selection could be done on your personal screen. Granted, it's slightly expensive to play if everyone doesn't already have the cables and GBAs, but playing through that from start to finish with 2 of my friends was one of the best multiplayer experience I've had in a while.
I'm looking forward to having the Wii support wireless DS connectivity. That will make Crystal Chronicles that much better, having a touch screen and two personal screens will make for an even better experience.

  11. Defective DRM on Sony Doing An End Run Around Its Own DRM · · Score: 1

I work at a music store, and Switchfoot, the artist featured on Slashdot a week or so ago on Sony's label, was having certain copies of their DRMed discs recalled. I read the paper briefly, and it was stating that there was a problem with the discs not being able to even be played on PCs, but no effect on audio CD players.
Why are the music companies bothering to use this DRM if it's causing such an uproar? Why are they just offering ways around it and not bothering to just STOP USING IT? It's cheaper for them, better for consumers, and doesn't present a problem for the artists. I don't understand how they think the DRM helps them in the least.

  16. Re:I find it depressing... on UK Record Companies Suing File Sharers · · Score: 1

As a musician, computer nerd, and former filesharer myself, I really don't feel all that threatened by file sharing. Granted, my band's music is nothing huge; we've just recorded one CD and are recording another right now, both funded by ourselves.
To me, the best approach bands / musicians can take is to give their fans a taste for free, then charge for the whole meal. A couple of free full song downloads (at least 128kbps mp3, nothing limited by DRM), then sell those songs plus more on a CD. The free MP3's give your band exposure and people can listen to and enjoy your without an investment or limitations. They can also give the files to friends, trade them on P2P networks, burn them onto a CD and listen whereever, etc. spreading your name around.
Now if someone takes our CD and rips it (specifically to share on P2P networks, not just for personal backup) and spreads the non-free songs around, then I've got a problem. They're potentially cutting into our sales by providing for free what we sell (and need to sell to recooperate the costs put into it).

Bottom line is, recording in studios costs money. Recording in the most expensive 'best' studio isn't really necessary, but you're still going to spend three to four thousand dollars if you want recordings that sound good (not necessarily including the CD printing). To cover that cost, someone's going to have to pay up. We're willing to pay the cost up front as an investment, but we need compensation so we can keep making more recordings for you to enjoy, hopefully better than the previous.
I've heard a lot of people say that artists should make money with live shows and give away the recordings, but (unless you're a really big name) live shows barely cover the costs of travelling expenses.

  21. Re:Pretty simple [Cain's Wife] on Many Scientists Admit Unethical Practices · · Score: 1

That's a quite reasonable explaination, although Genesis says Adam had other children after Cain was married (Genesis 5:4 is after Genesis 4:16).
Definitely agreed. I wasn't saying that the Bible clearly states Cain was married to his sister, but it just seems to be the most likely scenario and easiest explaination.

Same thing with the 6,000 year earth idea. The information in Genesis 1 is minimal at best. I don't know of anywhere that the Bible says the earth was created on a particular date.
Yes, Genesis is inspecific as to a date of the earth. 6,000 - 10,000 years is just the best guess we have from tracing the lineage from Adam to Jesus. In Genesis, when listing the lineage it also includes the length of the ancestors' life and when they had a certain child, so it's possible to get a rough idea of how much time had past. Again, we still don't know how long Adam and Eve spent in the garden, so all we have is just how long since he had his children. All we have are best guesses and taking a look at geological evidence.
I'm sure someone well trained in this sort of debate could explain much better than I, but this all just comes from what I've read and heard in the Bible and from other sources.

  23. Pretty simple [Cain's Wife] on Many Scientists Admit Unethical Practices · · Score: 1

"If Adam and Eve were the only two people, where the heck did Cain get a Wife???"

Many people bring this issue up, but the answer seems quite simple. Adam and Eve surely had more children than just Cain and Abel, and some of those children were likely female as well (Genesis 5:4 states that Adam had other children). Back then, the gene pool was definately purer (given all the source material was coming from two humans freshly created), and genetic defects weren't really a problem yet. Marrying your sister may seem like a gross thing to do nowadays, but there wasn't much of a choice back then.
Of course, if God can create one woman from a rib, He could create more. Indeed, a God who could create a universe from just speaking wouldn't need a rib to make a female.
I'm not good at explaining things late at night, so here's a good resource to get some answers from (a lot of fluff on there, but scroll down about half way and you'll find some answers).
