  1. Re:Two Reasons why Graphics are Vital on Graphics Don't Matter · · Score: 1

While I fully understand your point of view, you're missing something. There is a serious problem with the focus on graphics, and one that's getting much, much worse: Cost. Games these days cost tens of millions of dollars to produce! The biggest reason for this is how vital it is for sales to have great graphics. And then more gets spent on the game, and it becomes even more vital to sell more copies. Ultimately, this can only lead to rising retail prices if it continues. Also, expect lots of developers and/or publishers to stop focusing on things that don't sell as well, like gameplay and creativity. (Hint: EA.)

Without N64 games, it's not likely to fill up at all. My NES roms total at 100MB, my SNES roms at 750MB. That's for pretty much every game that exists in English, plus some that don't. And, of course, while there are lots of gems in there, most of those games are pretty bad.

N64 games are smaller than people think, as well. You DO have some big games, like Conker's Bad Fur Day and Resident Evil 2, at 64 MB. But the majority is much smaller, about 10MB each.

So, you can fit, well, let's say at least 30 games on that thing, if they're all N64. Many times that if they're older. That seems to be extremely reasonable for what comes with the purchase price. You can always buy more memory, so why make every single person that buys the console pay extra?

As for reasons to use flash instead of a disc-based drive, well, there are lots of reasons. Durability is one, noise is another. But when you look at the SIZE of that machine they showed, and consider that they plan for the launch product to be even smaller, size and heat are almost certainly the main motivations.

Not convinced that this is the deal winner at all. All you would really manage to hit is the older Nintendo fans that don`t have their N64 sitting about somewhere.

Well, actually, it scores major points with me. I have an N64, but it's a pain in the ass to get it to work. Mine has problems, my second one has problems, all my friends' N64's have the same problems -- the damn thing never starts up, and when it does, it tends to just turn off within a few minutes. Sure, the GameCube and Gameboys are all impressively reliable, but the N64 isn't. (Neither are its otherwise-awesome controllers, actually.)

But look at this guy. How does saying something so blatantly arrogant help you? "Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a Shihan." Wow. Reminds me of last year's E3 when the man was subtly smug about how his marketing department's blatant lies managed to put the final nail in the coffin of Sega's hardware-making days.

I disliked the fact that Link and Zelda were completely different and just looked like the original Link and Zelda. Its actually a "side story" variant. The final battle with Gannon was very easy compared to all the other Zelda games. I understand this one is a direct sequel with the real Link in it. I guess in the far future, their race's skin becomes smooth and posterized.

Uh, according to the article, this Link is, like most Links, a new one. Link and Zelda aren't meant to be chracters, exactly, but the eternal personalities of the Hero and of the Princess in Distress.

Also, lots of games do come on DVD these days. The thing is, a single-disc install is something they can charge more money for. You mentioned WoW, well, the Collector's Edition included a DVD and a CD set. I believe the UT2k4 collector's edition came on a DVD too. Myst 4 comes on TWO DVD's.

The only reason to put a game on DVD instead of CDs is if it's more profitable. If you have a Collector's Edition, it can make more people buy the more expensive version, but otherwise, 4 CDs are still cheaper to buy and burn.

The main two Java programs I'm using for comparison here are Azureus and Eclipse, which I know people often use as examples to prove that Java programs aren't horrendously slow. And that's true, they aren't all that slow. But a lot of effort is put into them, and in my experience they still don't run as smoothly as a slapdash .NET program does.
