Once airline industry embraces this, it will be very quickly coming down to affordable level for commoners for tourism atleast. For commerical travel, it might be a while before this technology is used as we can see from the example or Concorde.
Jay Leno was joking that Southwest will offer space flight for $99 but you will have to stop in fresno, LA and SFO first.

If the storage is temporary, i.e for a week or so, or to transfer files, USB drives are great. (Thumb drives I mean)
For longer term, i.e about a year or so, hard disks are good. Both USB and slave drives should do. (I wonder if there are any wireless hard drives ?!! )
For even long term, you will need back up tape drives.
Also, it depends on the amount of storage you need.
For small scale CDs are cheap and reliable, and for larger scale storage, DVDs are good.
If you want to store lots of mp3s, just get two Ipods!;)
Provided we can quickly learn to use this thing, it will be a great space saver. I will buy one after checking it out at my local store when it gets there.

At the time, he said that Intel wouldn't enable the feature until Microsoft released a 64-bit version of Windows; that operating system is expected later this year.

As I grew up I watched so many programs like "Beyond 2000" on discovery channel and felt excited about being in the years beyond 2000. This is 2004 and none of the promises came true. We are at about the same level as we were in 1999 technologically. Or even worse as concorde is gone. Somebody, move us into the future!
More importantly, I'm curious how other universities will start making their courses available freely online
Virginia Tech CS department has most of the course material availabe for download online. Some courses even have audio streams with them. Best site for CS students everywhere.
You should either be a GOD in CS with a PhD or too many impressive qualifications to find a 'good job' in CS these days. If you have only minimum quals, you might end up as a sysadmin somewhere for a small network.
If you're not a GOD, and want a good job, then try not to be a pure CS guy. Take up a minor that you like while you're still in school and try to think about how your CS skills can be used in that minor. Eg Civil engineering needs lot of programmers who know some civil engineering.
There is a surfiet of programmers in the market who know nothing other than programming lanugages.
To get job security, developers need to position themselves as highly effective business-value generators, working with the rest of the company to solve common goals.
In other words, developers must try to become gods.
R is a programming lanugage / statistical package. Its usability is way low compared to spreadsheets. It's only advantage is it's free.
The other two you mentioned are the similar and moreover, are not free.
The greatest limitation of excel for scientific calculations is that number of rows is limited to 64k.
I was hoping the open source or free versions would overcome this limitation but none of them do so as this makes them incompatible with excel.
can't someone figure out a smart solution for this without asking the user to modify the source themselves??
When I call someone and talk to them, the phone call is charged. When voice transmission itself is not free, why should video conferencing be?

bring prices down and as long as there is someone else offering the service for free, AOL cannot charge for it.

Reading this story, I am remided of the movie October Sky. For wannabe rocket scientists, this is one of the most inspirational movies.
