According to spiegel.de there are no bikes in Berlin today. The Deutsche Bahn has collected them all for a winter break and will check if anybody has manipulated them.

Btw: The CCC will meet from December 26th to 29th for their annual congress. Motto: "The ususal suspects".

P.S.: I submitted this story on Saturday.

  3. Some advantages of an installer on Gentoo 2005.0: A Live CD And [No] Graphical Installer · · Score: 4, Interesting
I want to outline some advantages of an installer:

    • You can configure the system first and the installer does the rest. No need to wait for the completion of step 1, step 2, step 3. You give just all information needed and the installer makes the rest. You can work something else until the installer is finished.
    • The learning effect is low when you have to type a long line of parameters from the manual. This does not mean, you have understood anything. With an installer you can give the lectures right on the right place. 'Learning by doing' instead of 'learning by typing'.
    • There is no real need to make the central configuration files by yourself. The normal user has only one set of devices, he will not change the /etc/fstab every week or once a year. Other distributions show that you don't need to know exactly the syntax of an file to know how the system works.

Well - the German computer magazine c't published three times a customized version called "Knoppicilin". Information are here (German).

I have seen a project like this once before, it failed as foreseen. Someone put on a website, but he did not take much time to consider how users should and could use this list, how could it be updated and so on.

Another project on the same website was to find the best(!) linux distrubution in a wiki - you can see the result here. Do I have to mention that the best distribution was not found?

When you put on a wiki, you need clear questions and rules, you need moderators, who pick the useful infomation out of the chaos and set an reasonable structure for wiki readers and contributors.

I checked the MSN newsbot and was suprised to find there (German) articles, that news.google.com didn't find. In the other way, MSN didn't know most sources of Google news.

What is the deal for content publishers to give MSN and Google access to their databases? If it is readers attention, this way is the wrong way.

Could MSN adopt paid content for their newsbot? This would be another business modell.

  11. The search for new markets on How Microsoft Could Embrace Linux · · Score: 1

Microsoft knows about the danger for its core business. Bill Gates invested his money in gold mines and huge content data bases. But what can MS do?

Microsoft has to find new markets. They brought into the PDA market, the TV market, the search business. They could attack comptetitors very successful with billions of dollars, but by that they destroyed the markets. After MS has destroyed a market they had to find new ways to generate profits again. But in most cases this was not successful yet.

I believe the typical management type is not the typical public library type.

Load an IE theme and nearly no one will notice the difference. URL bar, bookmarks - you need nothing more in a public library.

When you use mozilla in office you will have to deal with a lot of extra functionality of mozilla.
