My girlfriend and I were having sex when I looked up to see a burning building and went "That must of sucked" then wait back to having sex. It wasn't until afterwards that I realized what happened. Fortuantly the media replayed the entire event over and over for a year or 2, so I didnt' miss anything. At least it makes a great "where were you" story to tell my children.

Which brings up an important question. How long do you support these browsers? I'm not trying to troll or anything. I try to support as many browsers as possible, but I tell my clients I can only confirm ie6, safari, mozilla, and opera in my standard quotes. Anything more will require more debuging time.

At what point would you say we should stop supporting browsers that have much newer versions at no cost. I personally think we should support technology for a max of 3 years. On my personal website I display a page that tells IE users that they are using a insecure browser and my site may not display properly and I provide links to opera and firefox. But that is my personal site, and I know commercial sites can not do this. I just find it interesting we talk about all this new technology, but we never talk about when is the right time to abandon old technology. We just say, well when its supported, or well when most people use X. But most people will never use X product without any reason to. In the computer world software lives forever, it has no natural shelf life. We have to plan its obsolescence (I have no clue if I spelled that right). So what time is the right time to abandon old technology? When should we stop supporting IE5. Does anyone still code for NCSA Mosaic?

Exact figures are not as important as the overall amount of atttempted downloads. Any intelligent use of logs/javascript/php or whatever else you want to use will give you a good feel for the number of actual downloads. If I sell 300,000 copys of a game, and my website gets 210,000 hits for the linux binarys, this tells me that a good majority (possibly 90-130,000) people wanted the linux version. Why is this concept so freaking hard for you to figure out? How can they track actual box sales for windows when the mac and linux version are the same box? Let me answer that. They can't. Do you know why? Because they have no clue if you are going to use it on mac/linux/windows or even simply buying it to jack off on. So how is this any different then checking the number of downloads? Well guess what, it isn't. Now get a clue.

I used javascript as a simple tool to show how anything can be tracked. You may not have 100% numbers, but you can track at least the number of attempted downloads. You could use php, asp, or as someone even pointed out just plain old server logs. The point is it can be done well enough to decide if it is marketable. I'm done now.
