I took a joke course on scripting languages last fall, and the professor was in love with Tcl/Tk, but seeing as how no one cared, we learned Perl/Tk instead. The Tk widgets are the more useful part of it...Tcl was OK, but it frankly shocked me that it was still being developed actively. Anyone used the new version and can vouch for the speed boost? It was so gawd awful slow before that I couldn't bear it.

Why is it that Europeans can be so incredibly full of themselves, their culture, their history, brimming with arrogance, and call Americans the only bad guys in the world? I mean, come on, everyone has their faults, on both sides of the pond, but ignoring one set and focusing on the other is irresponsible reporting.

    From article:
"Europe is the birthplace of the Web, with a wealthy, technically literate population, a network infrastructure that rivals that of the US and a rich cultural and political tradition which can counter US constitutional imperialism."

So all of us Americans are ready to run over to Europe waving the Constitution around, eh? Sheesh. Maybe like the Simpsons, the 2nd amendment is there to let us keep the King of England from walking in and pushing us around. Whatever. Get a clue, pal. We're fine and happy to let Europe run however they want, at least most of us. Stop listening to a couple pundits and company spokespersons and see what the rest of us Americans do: not give a shit.

"An important factor in Europe's favour is that we retain a belief that governments are a good thing, that political control is both necessary and desirable, and that laws serve the people. These beliefs are now lacking in the United States, rendering it incapable of acting to create any sort of civic space online or allowing its government to intervene effectively to regulate the Net."

Not all Americans are anti-gov't. I doubt many are. We just take a vocal stance whenever the gov't does something we don't like. I for one, have little faith in the system for immediate results. I think we're going to suffer for years with irresponsible, ill-advised, and sometimes unconstitutional laws and court rulings on the internet and technology problems, but in the end, I believe it will even out, much as regulation of the telephone companies and cable providers. It just takes a while for them to get a clue, which is expected in a large bureaucracy unfortunately.

And I'll bet there are a lot of folks in Europe that complain about gov't policies they don't like as well. And I'll bet they've been doing it for hundreds of years before the US even existed. So don't even start on civilized, conformist Europe Thompson.

"The United States is incapable, for the reasons I've described, of understanding this or of escaping its constitutionally-determined destiny to attempt to establish hegemony over cyberspace. "

Yeah, the US is definitely one big hegemony, a monolithic country seeking to dominate all. Bleh. Try a multiplicity of different groups who all want something different, but only really get heard outside their communities by doing something highly illegal or pouring money into someone's coffers. The simple fact is that Thompson is painting Americans as one giant evil group, while Europeans are all united in goodwill and such. Please. This guy needs a good thwapping with a trout.

If he presented two viewpoints, showing a more accurate look at both american and european wrongs, and suggesting controlled networks being shared among all nations, I might care. As it is, he's painting anyone as a guntoting radical (in oregon, no less) if we want our internet the way it is. Take a hike, I say.

I was thinking of building a frame into a backpack, and using straps to secure the chassis into the air in the middle of the frame. Add some flexible shock protection (elastic or something), and it would ensure a stable base when sitting still, and shock protection for transport. This would also keep the space free from all around the case for heat and airflow issues.

A friend and I have been tossing around the idea of a backpacked minirig system for some time now, making use of small scrap cases from HP or something and the smallest form factor parts we could find. We wanted to build the entire thing into a backpack, so we just unzip a pocket, pull out a power cord and cat-5, and plug them in to go. This would be for both LAN parties and just doing work on the fly, and much less expensive than a laptop; more upgradeable too.

The Shuttle setups seem almost ideal to this, as they've already solved some of the cooling problems we were finding with our minirigs. I'm just waiting to see what a Shuttle w/nForce2 looks like, and maybe some AMD support instead of Intel.

I noticed recently a new rollup keyboard on thinkgeek as well, which would be suited, so long as it works well; small factor mice are readily available for laptops, so those arent an issue.

Have any other /.ers tried/accomplished anything like this? Also, for those of you who've used them, whats your personal opnions on Shuttles other models? I'm especially interested in the cooling issues, as building a computer into a backpack creates even more :)

I'm a practicing Baptist, and have some strong issues on some things. However, when my church was passing around a petition in support of mandating censorware on school computers, I spoke out against it. People looked at me like I had suddenly turned into a gorilla.

Honestly, when public schools are underfunded, and hardworking teachers are underpaid and under-rewarded, should schools really be spending money on software that has been proven time and again to be ineffective? I haven't got this program to test, but how much of google's cache do they block, I wonder? And the Usenet archives? Between those, I imagine you could get anything you wanted anyways. My experience with the censorware at work has been it even blocks Slashdot on some days, but never anything else. It blocks a few online game sites, like Sony's Station, but not much else. I don't sit at work and browse porn, but I've loaded pages before that had plenty of it (people really need to identify whats in the links they email me) and the censorware didnt stop it at all.

So I ask you: Censorware that arguably does as much harm as good? Or raises for teachers and administrative staff who could better nuture teens' growth away from questionable sites as it is? It doesn't take much for someone to walk thru a computer lab now and then, and anyone turning their monitor off quickly is rather obvious. Censorware is a leech-like entity, and rates only slightly above spam mailers in my opinion (only because they once had, deep down inside, an urge to do something good--or so I like to believe).

But taking an active role in childrens education about such things, and occassionally checking in on them while they're surfing are far better alternatives than spending money thats going to limit so much of the good with only a little of the bad.

This is the US version I'm referring to, so I believe there is probably a difference. Copying was near impossible for a while, until someone released a cracked ds.exe file. Even then it was hard to find (not that I was looking, it was a friend at work, honest).

3 of us purchased the game, one person's worked fine in his computer, the other two of us actually exchanged the game because it did not work on a total of 6 cdrom drives between us. After the exchange, there were still problems, but after a long fight I got it installed. On my computer at work it installed fine. It just depends on the CD drive, but there are an awful lot of non-compatible drives out there for this game. Its disturbing that my newish Sony DVD-ROM wouldnt install this, and my 6 year old Ricoh CDRW would. Of course, since the CDRW is a 6x read, it took an hour for a full install.

As it is, I'm afraid to try and install it again...dont feel like dealing with the PitA that it is, despite it being a fun game. Fortunately, I got it for $20 at Best Buy, when it was still retailing for $50 on average, so I'm not worried about letting it gather dust.

This is just wrong on so many levels. One, as anyone in Usenet knows, there are a lot of trolls out there who claim its wrong, not that we listen to them.

But seriously, how many CD copy protections prevent the CD from being used on a majority of players?? I know of one game thats been almost endemic in its lack of functionality, and thats MS' Dungeon Siege. I've got 3 cd drives (32x, DVD-ROM, and CD-RW) and dungeon siege only worked with my CDRW. Thats the worst case instance I can think of for software lack of functionality due to media changes (MS has some lovely copy protection nonsense on the CDs). And there are legitimate complaints all over the place about that problem.

The majority of software is protected via regkeys and other software based methods, *not* by scratching the CD so only some players can read it. Someone want to come with me to smack this guy with an EUL printout or two? It'd be fun...
