You must be in marketing. Not only is your statement untrue, but the facts that you did include are misleading. The SPH-I300 is a dual-band phone that supports analog roaming, which means you can use it pretty much anywhere in the US, although you'll be paying roaming charges when not on the SprintPCS CDMA network. The Treo is strictly a GSM phone, which while it could be called a "World" phone, means that it will only work in major cities in the US and in very few places between. There is a CDMA Treo planned for release sometime this year, no idea if it will support analog roaming or not.

How that such a settlement has apparently been rejected (and rightly so), MS can go after the schools with the excuse that "we wanted to donate software to the schools, but the government wouldn't let us".

At any rate, I've been waiting for one of these 2 to hit $200 before I purchase one, now I just have to see whose games are more affordable.

Was this new ROM on standalone units as well. I'm aware that it is active on the DirecTiVo boxes running 2.5 or later, but I hadn't heard that it was also on standalone units. BTW, there's been a ROM hack for quite awhile now that effectively disables the software checking that the ROM does.

That wouldn't be a software upgrade since TiVo currently only uses their dial-up service to perform software upgrades and maintenance releases. What you're likely seeing is the download of the previews and magazine that are buried a few menus below the main TiVo menu. There is speculation that over-the-air software updates might be coming at some point for the DirecTiVo boxes, but I've not heard anything about such a thing for cable service.

Yes, this is true. I believe the spot-beam became active in February or January of this year. To give an example of how it works, I live in Ohio, so the spotbeam that covers my area also covers networks from Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. If I were to use a "test" card, I could receive local networks from any of these cities. I could also receive the national network feeds which cover the LA and NYC networks. Prior to the spot-beam, a "test" card user could receive the network feeds from any other city regardless of where they were physically located. I'm not sure how Dishnet works, but I do believe that they also offer a national feed of one of the Mountain Time Zone cities (Denver perhaps?), whereas DirecTV only offers Eastern and Pacific time zones on their national feeds. Offering a feed from each time zone for their entire customer base is likely the way that Dishnet and DirecTV would offer the networks if they got their way. I seriously doubt that they'd go away from the spot-beam since they implemented it to save bandwidth in the first place.

Along that same line of thought, television contracts for things such as NFL broadcasts are very dependent on certain regions only getting certain games. The value of that package to the networks changes greatly if anyone with a dish can get any game regardless of where they live. This would also hurt DirecTV's exclusive ability to offer their NFL Sunday Ticket package, which currently is the only legal way for a DirecTV or Dish or cable subscriber to receive any NFL game they want. BTW, Dish and DirecTV are attempting to merge, so it seems Dish has decided that the ability to offer distant locals is more valuable than the NFL Sunday Ticket revenues are.

Interestingly, the one user session limit is strictly a licensing restriction on XP. XP Professional is limited to a single remote user connection not because of technical limits, but because MS doesn't want people running terminal services without paying for a server OS. The RDP in XP is pretty much identical to the RDP that has existed in NT Terminal Server and Win2k server platforms for the past few years. That said, I don't see that limitation being a drawback to this particular product since it is more geared toward a single-user environment (where you can carry your desktop computing environment with you to the conference room or to the toilet) and not toward having a ton of roaming users off of this single box, although it would be nice to be able to run the type of home entertainment system from one box and have multiple clients scattered throughout the house.

Yes, that's a pretty good deal. Sprint recently lowered the MSRP on the 6035 since sales have really dropped (competition from the Samsung i300, upcoming Treo devices, etc). The 6035 is larger than the i300 and has no color screen, but Kyocera has actually released an SDK (unlike Samsung) and there is a fairly large user community supporting the phone (www.qcp6035.com). But at that price, it's a cheap way to get a pretty slick PalmOS smartphone.

The i300 is buggier than any other PalmOS device I've used (I probably have to reset the thing once per week), Samsung still has not yet released an SDK, and the screen is a bit difficult to view in direct sunlight. But the color screen is great indoors, the form-factor is very user friendly, and like I said earlier, the ability to carry a single small device rather than 2 slightly smaller devices is a big plus for me.

  21. RentMyDVD.com on Review Of Netflix DVD Rental Service · · Score: 4, Informative
When I first purchased my DVD player a year or so ago, I excitedly took advantage of the free Netflix trial that was included with the player. However, turn-around times were slow since they ship from the West Coast, and it was very rare to actually get a new release within the first couple of weeks of its release.

I then came across a similar company that, at that time, was fairly new to the DVD rental market, RentMyDVD.com. New releases seemed to be in stock much more often than with NetFlix, it was rare to have to wait longer than a week to see a new release. Better yet, they have a shipping center in San Francisco and one in New Jersey, meaning I could normally get a fresh batch of movies here in Ohio for each weekend. I stuck with RentMyDVD.com for 6 months or so and was fairly happy, eventually dropping them once I saw most of the movies that I wanted to see but didn't want to own.

The problem that DVD rental services as a whole face are scratched discs, and this is a glaring problem with the Netflix-types of long distance rental companies. It's frustrating enough to settle in for a night of movie watching only to have some bad skipping an hour into the movie. But when you rent locally, you can run down to the local store right away or the next day and have the problem correct. With NetFlix and RentMyDVD, they'll credit you with a free rental, but you're still waiting at least 3-4 days to have the problem rectified. For the most part, these companies do check to ensure that they're sending out unscratched movies, but I've had at least 5 movies ruined by having some pretty bad skipping right in the middle of a movie. For the most part these days, I spend a few bucks more and just buy the bulk of the movies I want to see, and use Half.com or Ebay to get rid of whatever I don't want to keep.

What you can do (and what I did) is to "pad" the recording time of the program that follows a sporting event.
