  1. Car Analogy on 3D Printing and the Replicator Economy · · Score: 3, Interesting

When was the last time you built your own car? All parts required are readily available.

What percentage of all PC users build their own PC (overall PC users, not /. geeks)??

The thing is, most people don't have patince/skill to build things, and they're better of just buying thigs they need, like TFA says.

3D printing could be the next industrial revolution, but it could also be a niche for hobbists.

  2. Yay!!!! on Sega To Bring Dreamcast Titles to PSN, Xbox Live · · Score: 3, Interesting

May I be the first to say the Dreamcast was the console with the BEST ratio of AWESOME games to crappy ones. Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, F355 Challenge, Powerstone, to name a few.

It's a great day to be a PSN or XBL subscriber!! The value of a subscription just went up!!!

"WTF" quote of the day. What does dual-core have to do with multitasking??????????????? Windows did multitasking long before dual core chips existed.

On a related note, the iPhone DOES multitasking; it just doesn't let the USER multitask. How do you suppose an incoming call gets through while you´re listening to music?

Everyone loves throwing that line around, but I've yet to meet a professional designer (freelancer or otherwise) who's paid for Photoshop, let alone "happily."

I suspect the $700 pricetag is Adobe's way of offsetting some of the losses incurred by piracy. Better that than SecuROM, I guess.

Yes, WinMo allows you to install any WinMo app you want from any site you want.

  16. Re:Unavoidable on Game Industry Vets On DRM · · Score: 5, Insightful

    Disagree on almost every level.

With f2p MMOs, I - not the developer - get to choose IF, WHEN, and HOW MUCH I'm willing to spend on the game. If the game is good, I'll gladly pay to get better gear, charms, etc. If the game sucks, I quit and I'm out of $0.

Compare that to Aion where you PAY $50 for the retail game, then PAY $15 a month just to SEE IF YOU'LL LIKE IT. That, my friend, IS a rip-off.

Obviously, the "race to the top" becomes a big spender's minigame, and you'll end up maxing out a few credit cards to get there, but that's only a minority of the player base.

F2P games were born in Asia, where most players are poor and play mostly from lan houses. So it doesn't make any sense to pay monthly fees.

  22. Inaccurate on Game Endings Going Out of Style? · · Score: 5, Insightful

All arcade, most Atari 2600 and some NES games had no ending and consisted of stacking more and more points, until your thumbs bled or the PCB fried. That was the whole fun of it. The old school-way to do it.

It's when games started telling stories (example, Final Fantasy) that we had elaborate plots and game endings.

But now with the MMORPG craze, every publisher wants a piece of the action (and profit). Game endings are out, micro payments, subscriptions, DLCs are in.

It'll be a truly sad day when all we have to play are Disney MMO, Star Wars MMO, Warcraft MMO, Sonic MMO, Tomb Raider MMO, Halo MMO, etc.
