You didn't have to be born with super powers to become a super... Syndrome worked his way there. There were also common themes about exercising the gifts you're given (Violet not being able to do the force fields without practice).

  4. MD5 SHA on Letters-Only LM Hash Database · · Score: 1

Oddly enough, I was going to start a similar project for SHA and MD5 hashes. Sure, the DB would be huge... But huge is easily dealt with. At 4 gigabytes per DVD-R (I know, I'm such a n00b, haven't gone dual-layer yet), .zip allowing compression to 2/3rds of disk space, that's about 64 million passwords per DVD.

    One DVD could easily handle:
    Every Zip
    Every 7-digit phone number
Every word in the dictionary (Upper, lower, and Capitalized)

Move up to a 2 disc set and get:
    Every date

With a little work it'd probably be possible to do names as well.

If you really want to brute force it:
Every possible password 8 characters or less could fit on a petabyte of storage. Expensive for your average geek, but how much do you want to bet that there's some government agency that did it on a lark?

I've heard a lot of discussion that Osama wants so-and-so in power, all because of these new tapes. It makes great media, but people who are doing these kinds of conjectures forget that Osama doesn't give a crap.

Osama Bin Ladin does NOT CARE who our president is. He will continue to be a threat to the people of our nation. Either major candidate will keep him on the run, and neither will let up (If for no reason other than good press if they catch him).

So why did Osama release the tapes? For exactly what he's been given: Air time. For a few days, he and the Taliban have been gracing newspapers, radios and TVs. He's succesfully produced A reminder that he's out there, healthy, and able to strike again. It is also these kinds of messages that result in terrorist recruits. It's all about the free publicity.

Ok, OpenOffice.org proved to be too large for me to really use, so I hopped over to the GIMP instead. I grabbed a copy of their source, and created a text file that appended all of the c files I could find in one directory... About 750k.

I took the "English with lots of punctuation", and copied the .xml file. It turns out that using their little interface for creating a language is a PITA, and just copying an existing file works pretty well. I tweaked it to change the name of the language, and point to the right training document.

It needs a little work, because there's no way to tell the difference between a space and an underscore, but for the most part it works pretty well. As a fairly quick test, I'd call it a great success.

I also did the same thing using PHP. Similar results. I got a chuckle when I was able to visually see the probability of me typing _POST or _REQUEST after any $.

Pretty neat. Slower than typing, but it has some interesting possibilities.
