You wouldn't expect a public office to hang onto every piece of paper, so why should they be expected to hang onto every email they have ever received?

There are always going to be things like replies to an original question and subsequent follow up questions going back and forth, so normally hanging onto the latest/final reply would be sufficient (providing it had the previous history - clearly showed the conclusion).

Now if they were to use this as an excuse to accidently lose records that would be a different matter. This however is where auditors should be playing a role to ensure that they are keeping the right records and discarding the rubbish.

On the whole like you I believe this to be true. However the world as I see it is constantly now balancing on the edge, and there are 2 facts which when combined together may just one day upset this balance:

    • proliferation - Far too many dangerous weapons/substances were left literally lying around after the break up of the cold war.
    • different perspectives - There are people in the world who would definately press a big red button given half the chance without even stopping to think about the consequences.

  12. How 1 clever person got a telco to pay them money on 80,012 Text Messages In One Month · · Score: 1
This reminds of a story I was once told by an UK telephone industry insider. The profit for a customer call to a premium rate number is usually split between service provider and the operator of the premium rate service.

When a well known UK telephone company first created a business line unlimited calls option in the early 1990's for around 400GBP per month someone worked out a clever and legal (at the time!) money making scheme. What this person did was to setup 2 phonelines:

    • Line A - a premium rate number as the operator
    • Line B - a business line with unlimited calls option
They then setup line B (unlimited calls) to call line A (premium rate) continuously so that half the profit of the calls to the premium rate line would go to them!!!

After several days the telephone company stopped this person's profit making scheme by blocking the ability to dial premium rate calls from their unlimited service and changing the service contract but not before the telephone company had ended up paying a lot of money to someone for their clever scheme.
