The truth is that another hijacking is unlikely to happen. With the memory of 9/11 anyone trying to take over the airplane is going to be subdued, if not out and out killed, by the passengers.
Unless the passengers are taken out by shock bracelets. Good job, TSA!
"Outsourcing in general is not caused by the minimum wage."
You're going to have to provide some evidence to support this. If the whole purpose of business is to make money, and companies can make more money by paying less to workers, then it is obvious that the minimum wage is going to drive jobs away. That would be true if most of the most of the jobs outsourced would pay minimum wage in America. Let's think of some common jobs that are outsourced - programmers, call centers, factories - their American counterparts make 2-3 times the federal minimum wage on the low end (yes, factory workers make more than min wage - do you think anyone would work in a factory if they could work at a less dangerous job for the same amount of money?). Outsourcing didn't happen so that companies could pay $1 an hour instead of $5, it happened so that they could pay $1 an hour instead of $20. Removing minimum wage won't bring those jobs back, because it's not going to make American programmers take $1 an hour. The only way to make America compete with 3rd world countries on wages is to make America a 3rd world country.
"history it's how things used to be when it was legal to put kids down a mine for pitiful pay."
But advancements in technology eliminate such a scenario in the present-day US. Like I said, no evidence.
Uh... you do realize that people still go down into coal mines to work? Now? in the US? If we got rid of child labor laws what technology do you think would prevent kids from working down there?
Well, I'm sure people who can't afford heat or food want iPhones and PS3s just like the rest of us, but they don't care because they're worried about the disconnect notice they just got from the gas company. I guess if they had different priorities and became anorexic or decided they didn't need heat in below-freezing whether they could afford cell phones and cable and other things, because you're right, a cable bill is less than a heating bill and you can easily spend as much on food for a week as you could for a cell phone for a month - but I don't see people doing that. But when people can't or can just barely afford food and heat, does it really matter how affordable cell phones and cable are?
At this point, in the US, no one without serious mental problems is really "lacking in material possessions". It's hard to find people who want a television but don't have one, say. Or a cell phone. Oh that's bull. I know plenty of people without cellphones, hell, I've known people who've went winters without heat because they couldn't afford the gas prices. And, no, they're not insane. They just make all of about $7 an hour.
The equipment and infrastructure that were used to support the FCC should be sold off to the highest bidders, and that money should be used for compensation. Now that makes sense. But you can't make money out of nothing, and you can't refund money to yourself that has already been spent, which is effectively what you were calling for. But, not spending any more money on that waste of time would definately be a good thing.
Cool! Can I have your tax refund and stimulus check? Your tax refund is basically you just giving the government an interest-free loan. The stimulus checks were economicly stupid. Though I like money, it really wasn't a good plan.
I don't think that's a good example. While the code may inconvenience you, the goal here is to stop others from stealing your radio - which should be in your best interest. It doesn't stop anyone from stealing the radio, it just inconveniences them afterwards. Or, more likely, inconveniences the person they sold it to, and by that point the theft doesn't care and is stealing more radios. So, all and all, it's just an inconvenience, not a deterrent.
Actually, what should be done is that the information should be destroyed, those who were negatively impacted by the action should be compensated, and the public should be refunded the money that was spent on the project. And where does the money the public should be refunded come from? The government only gets money from us. The refund to ourselves can only come from ourselves, making any kind of refund after money has been spent pointless.
Why is the 2nd amendment more important than the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 19th let alone them combined? Because the 2nd Amendment is the one that gives us the ability to throw the reset switch if all else fails. And yes, that's exactly what it's for; all the bullshit reasons about (government-controlled) militias, self-defense, and hunting is just that: bullshit. The guys who wrote the Constitution had just finished violently overthrowing their government, so they wanted to explicitly reaffirm the right to do so again. Period. We didn't get the 13, 14, 15, and 19 because of the 2nd. Actually, we only got the 13, 14, and 15 because an violent insurrection failed, and the 19th wouldn't have come any sooner if women had shot people who wouldn't let them vote.
The 2nd mendment is out of date. We don't have militias, and hadnguns aren't that effective against tanks (and don't bring up Iraq; do we really want to be like that?). Now, I'm not saying that we should ban all guns. But we should base our gun policies on reality now, not the reality of 1781.
Take this game and its pitching, from the video, - how would you expect to pitch with the wiimote. Obviously, how you pitch in real life. It would take the velocity of your swing, the twist of your hand, the motion and direction into account for a pitch. Instead we get the same fucking motion-equivalent-to-button-push bullshit. Watch the video, you pitch by tilting your hand down. Who the fuck pitches by tilting their hand down. The tilt down can easily be replaced by a button press, since they serve the same purpose. If you want to immerse people in the game with unique controls, why the hell don't the actually do it. How is tilting down a controller to pitch any more immersive than pressing a button. Blame the dumbasses who pitched their wiimotes into their TVs while playing WiiSports for that.
And I wonder how it will work with ethanol gas? That apparently is all you can get now for cars. Where on Earth is ethanol all you get? I've never even seen ethanol for sale.
I'd love to see someone sit their girlfriend in front of a fresh XP install; "Now, go find drivers for network card, graphics card, divx codecs etc" Yeah right. Some of us girlfriends have been able to do that for longer than out boyfriends. It's not like you need a penis to figure out PCs.
And so is the person giving it away...lets not forget, stuff costs money. You can't survive by working for free. At some point you have to start charging money for stuff. Why not charge for the things you love to do such as writing software or inventing drugs...or whatever it is that you love to do? You could always charge for supporting the software. Or sell merchandise. Or certifications. Or a lot of things. The market is changing, and selling software in shrinkwrap is not the only way to make money as a developer.
If the processor came out even longer ago then that would make his point even *more* salient wouldn't it? Apparently no one knows what year it is. It's 2008. 2002 was 6 years ago.
As a further point about this whole issue, I have installed Leopard on a six year old G4 with stock parts and it not only runs well, all the test indicate that it runs applications at approximately the same speed, and it (subjectively) feels faster than Tiger did on the very same hardware.
Windows XP can't do that, let alone Vista. No, XP can't run on G4s. Or was your emphasis on the fact that the computer is 6 years old? Given that XP is 6 years old itself, it runs on very old machines, down to a 233 MHz processor. It also, subjectively, feels faster than 2000 did on the same machines. (Vista does not because it is a bloated hog) So what is your point?
TFA (wrong): These electronic brains govern everything from meal preparation and waking up the household to assembling shopping lists and keeping track of the bank balance. That's not really false. While computers that control your oven are too expensive for most people, they exist, and alarm clock, shopping list, and financial tracking programs are all very common.
Better solution? Both parents work ~20 hours a week instead of one working 40+ and the other not working (outside the home). That way, children get two parents instead of a parent and a money machine, and both parents get both career satisfaction and time with their kids. Also, in case of a divorce, then the courts could easily assign joint custody, instead of dealing with alimony and child support, and let both parents be parents, and be independent.
it is funny how housewives are denigrated but others who put children (teachers for example) are praised for their selflessness. or is it not cool to sacrifice for your own kids? i guess that is selfish. carry-on. There's a difference between housewives and stay at home parents. Being a stay at home parent is a very important role, but I have no idea what I'd do all day as a housewife. You can only do so much vacuuming.
You have to pay to have kids in the states? Wow. No wonder your "native" population is being pushed out. Childbirth costs $10,000 at a hospital here, if you're uninsured or if you signed a "maternity exclusion" clause to get affordable insurance. That's of course assuming nothing goes wrong. It can easily cost over $100,000 if there are complications.
And what do we get for all that money? The highest infant mortality rate in the developed world. Oh, my bad, we're actually lower than Latvia.
You've obviously never been uninsured. The emergency rooms are only required to provide emergency care. Once you are stabilized (or sometimes if you're not) they send you away. If you need prescriptions, further tests, or (ha!) physical therapy, you can forget about it. If you have severe asthma and you either need an inhaler or to go the emergency room every week, then you're going to the emergency room every week (they only have to provide emergency care, not preventative) until you either get the money for that inhaler or you have an asthma attack too far away from a hospital and die. If you have a degenerative spine disease, you can go to the emergency room for some lame painkillers and they'll tell you what kinds of tests and therapies they'd give you to keep you out of a wheelchair, if you had any money (this actually happened to a friend of mine). God only knows what would happen if you developed cancer or a terminal illness while uninsured.
No other developed country lets its citizens go without health care.
It's not just the newest wave; Linksys and Belkin wireless routers have had the option to turn off ssid broadcasting for a while now. Not that anyone seems to care or bother to take the time to go into the settings and change anything, but it's there.
Depends on the 'chick'. I don't really care about shoes, and I think expensive shoes are a waste of money. I also will never notice if your belt doesn't match your shoes.
If you go out and meet women, you might just find that we're individuals with our own personalities and opinions.
Is abstinence really that difficult? Why even take a risk? I wouldn't take that risk, but I'm not going to deny this drug to others because of what I'd think I'd do in their situation.
Again, obvious nostalgia. A bad NES game is a campy B movie but a similiarly bad PSX game was worse? Bad games are bad games. Both had a multitude. I have to say, the bad NEW games were better than the bad PSX games. Most bad NES games, considering the technology of that time, are somewhat amusing, while the bad PSX games are absolutely horrid. That's because Nintendo was actively policing the games made for the NES for quality because they saw what happened to Atari when they didn't. Actually, the Atari 2600 should probably win the price for worst games ever. No other console had a game so bad it had to be buried in the desert.
Unless the passengers are taken out by shock bracelets. Good job, TSA!
