Don't really need dupe checking code, from a programming perspective, it's quite simple to fix: Have users mark articles as dupes. If an article is marked as a dupe by enough users, it is excluded from front page posting, marked publically as a dupe, etc.
I agree. We all knew this was coming once they went through with the IPO... In my mind, this just confirms it. Google is now only responsible to its shareholders. Its shareholders make more money if Google is in China and not blocked. Therefore, Google is the Chinese government's bitch. Makes sense to me... I just still wish that Google was privately owned so they didn't have to ignore their mission statement saying "do no evil" because it goes against their REAL mission statement which says "make money, regardless of what you have to do to make it."
Disney, on the other hand, uses what's in the public domain already and creates wonderful works of art and culture.
But what do you do when Disney allows nobody else to use these public domain works because they have copyrights and trademarks on them due to their remake?
I was going to say that they might be more interested in using a real database like Oracle or PostgeSQL, but I see that the moderators have already got to your comment and marked it accordingly:^)
Again, this shows the bigger issue of Slashdot editors not being unbiased when posting articles. They could simply have read the article before they posted it, rather than posting an outright *lie* in the title of the post.
Editors: Please look at articles before posting them. It makes Slashdot look unprofessional compared to some other news sites around.

No.
You don't need to lie to people to inform them about spyware and adware. Hackers AREN'T trying to take over their computer, worms and ads are. If you tell them that they're going to be hacked, they'll go out and buy random "anti-hacker" shit from the nearest "security" company. Tell them the truth. If they have spyware, tell them what it is, how it caused their problem, and direct them to a good anti-spyware utility (don't just tell them to search for one as they'll hit fake ones, show them the Ad-Aware website or the like).
PEOPLE AREN'T STUPID. They just don't use computers as much as we do.
My workplace uses a heavily customized version of PeopleSoft that I'm relatively sure would tear a small rift into the space-time continuum if someone tried to access it with something other than IE.
I know that where I work, we were all given a number to give out, 1-888-SP2-HELP, if we determine that the issue is directly caused by SP2. Microsoft is (apparently) giving free upgrade support at that number.
I would note here that anyone who buys a PC at Wal-Mart is BEGGING for trouble. We have sections here called Wal-Mart "blitzes" that deal with the multiple issues with the computers we sell at Wal-Mart, the reason being that Wal-Mart demands the lowest prices of all the retailers we sell to, and thus we have to use our lowest-end components in these PCs.
No, but IMHO, this is another one of those features that Microsoft is coming out with that they will attach to Longhorn once it is released, thereby quashing all competition as it will be (heavily) advertised in the OS.
Yeah. Basically, they need to parody all of the movie, or parody none of it. So they need to remake it for their parody.
If you're a Sim-ling and you resent your Slashdotting overlord, do you have the right, nay responsibility, to destory his Quicken files?
Ooo... feature for Sims 3? I THINK SO!

Wow, that's like the definition of trolling.
If I had the space and the time, I would start a version of Slashdot that took Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View as a matter of policy.
You are absolutely right, things like this could be easily avoided. Day by day, Slashdot seems to appear less professional. I think it's time.

Like the Open Vote Foundation?

The way things are going now, our grandkids will just say, "But isn't that thing still going on?"
I bet they outsource it anyway. When I conferenced a customer to Earthlink, I got someone with a heavy Indian accent.
Are you pondering what I'm pondering, Pinky?
Well I think so, Brain, but didn't SCO already patent that way of doing business?
Why would they? It's not like they're making money off of these tracks, and it's not like Nintendo is losing anything.
Overclocked Remix has been around for a few years, and I don't think they've ever had a lawsuit.
Anyone else see the delicious irony in the name Contra Costa County?
1000 MB != 1 GB
1024 MB == 1 GB
Way to judge someone you probably don't even know. I agre with the grandparent, you are an asshole.

Winamp does video too.

"Would you like to add a Passport to Windows XP?"
Sound familiar?
Isn't that deja vu?
