If you're starting from scratch, by all means go with Linux and do it now instead of later. If you have to support an old system, you can't just ignore the cost of rewriting scripts, macros, and so on into their format. If you communicate with other companies or entities, and they have their own Microsoft-centric practices, you either have to find a way to handle them or stop doing business with them. Both cost $$$.

The reason this issue gets argued back and forth forever is because so many people think there is only one right answer. In any business situation especially, *all* factors must be considered not just the long-term benefits, or the short-term costs.

It's just interesting to me that people who got addicted to Star Wars when they were kids, despite (or maybe because of) its hackneyed acting and 1930s pulp inspired plot, can get older, lose all touch with that childlike sense of wonder, and feel betrayed by the same hackneyed acting and pulp plots that they grew up loving.

PS - I am a huge Star Wars fan. I say, enjoy things for what they are. Star Wars still appeals greatly both to the young and to the young at heart. I am very happily in that second category.

I can't RTFA as it is /.ed. I will say this though. The Final Fantasy franchise will win my heart back (it's been lost since 8) when they release a game where you have more than three people in a combat. I know VII only had 3 characters at a time active, but the awesome materia system and the great story made up for it. X was obnoxious because the bulk of gameplay seemed to revolve around juggling characters in and out and making sure everyone gets a hit.

Final Fantasy has lost a lot of the tactical flair that made it great. I think the storylines have gone to crap too but that's just a personal opinion.

I have a friend who writes microcode for IBM and he's basically of the same philosophy as myself. And I've "hung out" with many programmers. Not all programmers are pricks.

As for your analogy, it's cute but I don't see how it pertains to the conversation you tacked it onto. I can only imagine you consider the people who keep the programmers' computers, and the services they depend on to do their job, running to be akin to a janitor. Network admins usually get paid a little bit more than janitors, so businesses disagree. Secondly, I respect the janitor who does a good job keeping things clean, and there's no reason you shouldn't except for snobbery. You certainly shouldn't act like you know more about cleaning up than a janitor does, because if you're like most programmers I've met (myself included), you sure as hell don't.

If you don't know how to crawl around on the floor plugging shit in and getting dirty, you do not have the perspective necessary to write software to replace the people who do. The best programmers are not arrogantly disconnected from the people in the trenches, especially if they're working on software directed towards their field. A good programmer needs at least to know what people commonly need support about in order to address it in future software. If your CTO is as out of touch and disconnected as you, I pity your fellow employees.

You're also a poor team player, which is a liability to you and your career unless you work solo. You're also incredibly stuck up and elitist, which unfortunately probably actually helps your career. You're also way off base: you obviously consider yourself "above" the type of people who enjoyed this article, and your comments have been way more of an advertisment of yourself than anything to do with the issue. Why don't you drop out of this conversation and let the high school kids who spend all day plugging shit in enjoy it. Believe it or not, there are a lot more nerds in high schools than in high-paying programming positions. That being the case, this site should have more stories about them than you.

I'm not just talking about the short-term costs of buying the software (though that would be a chunk just by itself) but also the cost over time of free updates vs. buying new products, submitting to new licenses, agreeing to more draconian terms (including the right to do things like snoop on your computer and potentially cause uncalcuable damage), and bending over whenever Microsoft decides to change to a subscription service for which you pay a recurring fee for each license?
