While I'm sure this will simply get lost in the noise, it's a very timely subject for me. I had the pleasure of installing Windows 2000, then Windows 2000, then Windows XP part of the way, then Windows 2000 and finally Windows 2000 on my wife's new/old computer this weekend. Her old machine died a blue smoke death, so she inherited my Athlon 2.0 ghz and I got a shiney new P4. Mind you, My sturdy old Athlon ran linux like a champ. We're talking dual headed xinerama and all. The exact same hardware just wouldn't run Windows! The end result was that the TV card was preventing 2000 from installing, then the network printer drivers kept windows from booting, then windows update kept me from sleeping until finally a virgin, pure install of 2k was burned, booted, copied and stored forever to prevent future reinstalls on her machine.

I don't do windows because it's too delicate and takes too much time to get happy.

Im working on finishing my basement right now and their are no shortage of little places to fit a couple of gigs of data. But here is my thought. I bet you could fit a gumstix into a standard outlet box. Get the bluetooth version and an SD card, then just put a dummy ethernet jack or phone line into the box and viola. Easy to get to should you need the access and the last place I would ever look for a machine.

BTW, love the name, that was a great book.

I work in that building. They are actually there just to power the parking lot lights, but they do make a noticable impact on the power bill (My dad works for the company that tends the building). The whole building was designed to be energy efficient. That big lake out front actually holds a bunch of coils for the cooling/heating system. I believe they call it a hydrothermal heatpump and it is the same concept as a geothermal heatpump. Inside, everything is designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Unfortunatly, not many people have moved in as it was real estate that really wasn't needed (look at all the other office buildings right around it!) but I think its pretty slick.

People seem to consistently miss the point of open source software. As an OSS user, you ARE the Beta tester, developer, end user and marketing department. Software is developed to scratch an itch, sent to the general public who then complain that it doesn't scratch their particular itch, the software is tweaked, made better, and before you know it we all have fleas!
No wait, that's wrong. But you get the idea. It drives me nuts to see people harp on how poor an OSS piece of software is when they haven't done a single thing to contribute to that code. This is OSS folks, you dont just yell at a vendor that you paid money to (you did pay money right?) until they change their app. You have the source, resources are online everywhere to help you learn how to code. Use that energy towards fixing what you see as a flaw instead of complaining about it.

I picked up a pair of 7db gain antennas, smacked one on my AP and the other on my laptop. I then switched to channel 9, nothing seemed to be using that channel. While it's not the most friendly, It works. Unfortunatly, the next step involves an op-amp and figuring out a way to insulate my toaster.

Not true sir. Utilities like ettercap make it pretty darn easy to sniff a switched network. Download it and give it a shot. What I did, and it is working great, is cat 5 everywhere. Phone into a 110 block and then the 110 block connecting into a patch panel. A second patch panel handles all the cat5 in the house, so if a port needs to be data, it goes into my switch. If a port needs to be voice, then it goes into the other patch panel.

No harddrives in it, I run everything off of CD and use Ramdisks for RW stuff. It's a little noisy when it first boots up but after 45 seconds or so, it's as quiet as a powersupply fan and a CPU fan can be. Cheap too, I think I have a total of 60 bucks invested (god love ebay). So in short, be a geek and build your own. The power difference over a year between the eden boards and a C3 you can buy will amount to a super sized extra value meal over a year.

These "compression" servers do two things. The first is standards or client based compression e.g. removing carriage returns from your HTML or using a client to pipe the text through a compression program and then decompressing that data at the client side. But the gains are pretty much all seen in the image compression. All the image compression does though is downsample your images to a lower rate, pixelizing the hell out of them and making them almost useless. This is a poor effort pimped by a marketing drone to keep customers from putting too much pressure on an ISP for broadband.
