lost the potential to make more money, but you did not lose any actual money.

Generally with short selling the broker will make a margin call if the price rises by a certain amount to protect themselves. So if the price of the stock suddenly doubles, expect a call from your broker in the near future asking for a rather sizeable amount. In the case of doubling in value, they will be asking for close to the full amount that you initially shorted. If you dont have the funds immediately (generally they want payment VERY quickly ie. funds clearing in a day or so), youll be closed out and still have to pay whatever is left over.

Saying you will lose money if you sold lower than you bought is correct, but in absolutely no way any different to any other market transaction, and thus incurrs exactly the same risks. If anything as shorting is usually at much higher gearing than normal trading the risks are much greater. If you buy any stock and sell it for less, you will also lose money. And short selling you DO LOSE MONEY if you sell at less than you buy, REAL MONEY. Not just the potential to make money.

In options trading, which I suspect you are thinking of, if you buy a put option and the market moves against you, you still lose the initial amount you paid for the option. There is no such thing as a zero risk investment. If you want something close, buy treasury bonds and hold them to maturity. From there up the risks increase. Short selling is certainly one of the riskier strategies available to investors.

If you get Linux legally on cd in a format that a normal person can install, it costs more than Windows

I bought my Gentoo CD's from the Gentoo store. I did not HAVE to buy the CD's, it would have been perfectly legal for me to download them for free, or get a copy of a friend. Cost: $15US.

But...I also have AbiWord. Cost: FREE. Gnumeric (which is generally touted as being better than Excel): FREE. MySQL database server: FREE. And you know what, it is all 100% legal!

It also brings up the interesting point of Linus always being put forward as the man behind the free software movement as it stands today. Linus is apolitical and is definitely not the driving force behind free software. RMS has always been championing free software, and it is rather sad that people show no gratitude for what he has accomplished, instead mocking him for his beliefs.

And I always hear this crap about this administration being different to the Bush snr administration. Lets get this straight, unless Donald Rumsfeld has an identical twin, it is the SAME Donald Rumsfeld that was shaking hands with Saddam in the 80s, while he was gassing Kurds / Iranians. Is this the SAME Donald Rumsfeld that is now saying that the US was right in attacking Iraq because Saddam gassed Kurds / Iranians? And the names Cheney and Wolfowitz seem to sound familiar too. I wonder where I remember them from.

And let us see what has changed in the middle east since 98. Yes Al Qaeda brought down the WTC. Thats not the middle east. Basically the political climate pre Iraq invasion was largely the same as the political climate in 98. Same rulers, same factions, same attitudes.

The USA has many good people, unfortunately they are always drowned out by the people who seem to think that their president is faultless. If GWB announced that it was the patriotic thing to bang heads against a brick wall, the hospitals would be filled the next day with fractured skulls.

The problem with the statement was not that he thought Linux was not ready for the average home user (though I dont think the other distros will be particularly happy with that comment). The problem is that he said that average users should use Windows. Why Windows? Why did he not just point out that there are several other OS's out there who offer better desktop alternatives that RED HAT currently offers (IN HIS PERSONAL OPINION). Why actively promote Windows? It is quite unfair on the other distros for him to speak on all of their behalves that desktop users should use Windows

A better comment would have been to say that Linux is maturing at a rapid rate, and to point to Mac OS X as an example of a great Unix based desktop OS to prove that Unix can work on the desktop.
