i'd have to agree. my dad is going to buy a new laptop, and seeing as all he does on his current one is browse the internet, read email, and compose the odd document, i figured he should get a mac. so i brought one from work for him to try, and it totally freaked him out. he's not a complete noob, but he was visibly anxious when playing around with osx. it was strange.
after a while, he gave up, exclaiming "i'm too old to switch operating systems!"
i'm gonna try to push it again, but it's going to be a hard to impossible sell.
monitors: two of the normal aspect ratio dell 20" monitors, although i imagine the wide screen 24" ones would be a step up. or the apple cinema displays. i'm not sure three monitors give you any added benefit when they're very large, seeing as you'd have to either move back or turn your head quite a bit in order to make use of them.
mouse: logitech mx 1000. it does not have the email notification lights that the mx610 does, but it doesn't require batteries. the wireless base station also serves as a recharging dock.
keyboard: old IBM clicky keyboard all the way, although keyboard preference is highly subjective
is there a way that you can avoid virus and spyware hassles while sticking with what you know (windows)?
yes. try virtualization (virtual pc, vmware, etc) and combine it with roaming profiles on your domain. users' preferences and documents are stored (and backed up!) in a central location, and you can control what software goes onto the images they're using.
it makes the upgrade cycle easier too.
i don't know if this is feasible for only ~20 computers, but it's definitely something to look into.
just make sure that you work on interesting projects while you're in school. find out what projects your professors are working on and see if you can help with them.
are you interested in robotics? see if your university has a sony dog soccer team.
are you interested in web development? find a department with a really crappy website and give them a free upgrade.
does your school have a darpa grand challenge car? a solar car? are there any big FOSS projects that you can help with?
be proactive about finding cool things to actually do that complement all of the cool things you learn.
when you said "it's basically the same as the FX", i'm reminded of my dual athlon XP computer from a couple of years back.
AMD said that you need athlon MPs for SMP. but the MP and the XP were essentially the same processor. the only differences were that the MP had added testing done, and the XP had some traces cut on its surface to prevent SMP capability. some conductive paint fixed that.
is that the case here? or does the opteron actually have additional functionality that the FX physically lacks
if it's going to be released in japan in early july, then you might be able to download it off the intarweb in late june. maybe that's what he meant by "out"
and finding actual news IS hard. i tried it once. the headlines i came up with were:
- davez0r has pizza for lunch...again!
- it's raining
- the weird dude hanging outside of gamestop says that star wars: galactic battlegrounds is the game of the year
two options:
1. don't buy games
2. go to http://www.gamerankings.com/ and don't buy anything that gets lower than 90%.
this isn't rocket science, come on.
i seem to remember reading about how the guys that do orbitz don't use a database, they use a GINORMOUS custom lisp data access shizzle

this season's real world is excellent. there's so much drinking and hooking up!
i saw a preview for that movie this weekend.
wtf.
lol
my dual 20" monitors scoff at your paltry 19" midget monitors!
you should upgrade, the extra inch makes OOo run faster.

the dictionary says it has to do with adding slack to a rope
n ary&va=payed&x=0&y=0
probably a nautical term, but not having to do with sealant or decks

yea, and also, can you explain how you landed this job.
it seems ideal: tropical island, don't have to be overly competent, can browse slashdot

I know I wasn't the only one thinking it.

you don't die
on osx, openoffice runs on x11 (xdarwin, or whatever magic you have going on). x11 fires up an xterm window by default when it starts.

i'm not sure if that's what you want, but it looks promising
and i don't know what to do about the too dark

good point. maybe a meta tag would be useful
i get a lot of colds.
you can't just get it from the URL?
why would you need a meta tag or a CDDB-like thing
for the odd occasion that a site has a domain name that isn't what you want on your bookmark, you could hand edit.
