Seriously, I don't know why people have this loathing of Notes/Domino. It's proven to be secure, the mass mailing worms never worked, had a tabbed interface long before any browser, had a document library way before sharepoint, you can customize the crap out of your application / email, and build in a work flow to meet your business needs.
Not to mention that in the years I administered a Domino server (6.5 on Linux) not once did the server crash, go flakey, or some other problem.
Granted, I've been out of the Notes / Domino world for quite a while now and haven't really seen R7 or R8, but R6.5 was pretty damn good, especially if you'd seen R4.
Paranoid much? S3 is pretty secure. If someone gets access to my S3 account they'll find lots of pictures of my kids, some documents and that's about it.
That sounds like NYC and surroundings. Parkways that don't allow commercial traffic and bridge tolls for trucks that are extremely high during rush hour. Makes for good speeds on the parkways and no truck traffic during the morning commute.
I pretty much manage my own PC at work. Now we have site licenses for all the Windows and Office installs. I don't track my licensed software on my own, it goes in the DB with all the other information on my computer. Now I did that myself and have complete control over my entry in that database. Fortunately, if I need software, it's purchased for me and a few other co-workers. eg I run F8 as a base install with VMware Workstation to handle testing and windows (XP, Vista). The rest of the department can't really touch the host OS (I'm not nice enough to set my root password to one of our local admin passwords) But SMS is still able to patch the windows VM's and I manage patching the host.
So, I get my host OS that gives me most tools that i need to be happy and still can say that I have a fully functional and compliant windows installation(s).
Your analogy is not correct. The OS is not the engine, the CPU would be. Changing an engine in a car to a V8 from a 4 banger would be like smashing a new quad core xeon on a socket 7 board. Switching from Vista to Linux would be like changing from 86 octane to 94.
While this is not a way to recycle CD's, it is fun and will destroy the data on it permanently. Put one data side up in the microwave and run it for 2-4 seconds on high and watch the light show. (I wouldn't suggest doing this in a microwave you like, it *seems* to do no damage to the microwave but I can't be sure)
Unfortuneately, it seems (according to the article) that the real explaination is much more mundane- touch screens need recalibrating from time to time, and somebody has been sloppy with the recalibration schedule.
which is a safe bet, since your grandma is running the polling places and therefore the ones re-calibrating the machines.
There are times when caps lock may helpful. I wouldn't remove it entirely, just put it up with the scroll lock key or something, just to avoid accidental use. (Maybe make ctrl+scroll lock be a way to toggle caps?)
is to blur the totally useless targets (Britney Spears' house, Paris Hilton's house, etc)
how much processing power does Duke Nukem Forever need! That's like supercomputer performance from 10 years ago.
there's not a big userbase for noggin. Unfortunately, my kid loves that channel.

So, seriously, why such hatred?

I'm so glad I don't have to do that any more.

You should have to untangle the cables with a minimum of down time.

it's not that hard to find the wav file and replace it with 0.01 seconds of silence. and if i have to i will.
just because it "worked" for star wars doesn't mean it's going to work for star trek.
it's on at 9pm, what sunshine?

... pretty up a PC it's fine with me, as long as they let you get it without OS. It'd be nice to have a well designed PC for a change.
upside down, blurry, they are nice ideas, but i think i'd just put the entire page inside blink tags.
