  1. Acronyms on Microsoft to Buy Stake in AOL · · Score: 1

Between AOL And Microsoft, They have a monopoly on both two letter and three letter internet acronyms, AIM, MSN, IE, WIN, OE, IM, You've Got Mail...etc. There will soon be no room for further acronyms and they will have taken over the internet!!!

  2. Re:Another "new age" for PPC on XBox 360 Launching Nov 22 · · Score: 1

IBM already puts it in their servers, and offers PPC linux for it. PPC also has a huge embedded market. I would say this marks an end for PPC desktops. Laptops are the fastest growing market and IBM has already sold their laptop division. What motivation is there for desktop PPC? None. If you want to hack around with Consoles and PPC devices, you're in luck- and now you can emulate ppc on Intel, too!

  3. Geek Card Revoked! on XBox 360 Launching Nov 22 · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Okay, you've never had a console, but admit to playing Dance, Dance Revolution? I suspect your either a girl or gay. And I don't say that demeaningly. Its just I can't imagine a red-blooded male American (including Canadians) who would play it, except maybe in secret, and definitely true geeks don't have the coordination for it. Geezus what is Slashdot coming to?!?!

  4. Re:Previous Failures on Apple Is Accused of Violating Software Patent · · Score: 1

Which is what Booth should have done! Booth was a patriot? perhaps he was, but not a very effective one.

  5. Creative is already better bargain on Apple Is Accused of Violating Software Patent · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think Creative does have a better product- certainly a better range of mp3 players that deliver more value per MB. The difference is iTunes- Apple has the Music store and the "PC" interface. Creative is unlikely to provide a competitive service or an iTunes quality application. To be anything but bemused about this shows how naive you have been about how the "free market" actually works in the real world. Buy your own helmet and put your bitter disillusionment violin away. 6. Excuse me, miss on Warming Up Mars With Greenhouse Gases · · Score: 1

  7. Re:SimEarth on Warming Up Mars With Greenhouse Gases · · Score: 3, Interesting

Earth didn't have an ozone layer until plant life started to produce mass amounts of oxygen. There might be some way of speeding up that process. I see the big problem as being- not enough water. Underwater life doesn't need an ozone layer to thrive. Humans would still have to carry around breathable oxygen, but that would be a minor inconvenience.

  8. Job Security- sounds smart to me! on Astrologer Sues NASA Over Comet Probe · · Score: 3, Interesting

I think its the paying customers that you should criticize for not thinking clearly, not the astrologers themselves. I confronted an "astrologer" with the same facts you mention, and she explained that's the reason she keeps up on the latst astronomy news, and why people need professionals like her, rather than try to do astrology themselves.

  9. No he asked if they could clone alterboys, too on Astrologer Sues NASA Over Comet Probe · · Score: 0, Flamebait

  10. Hardware support, political games on Longhorn Preview · · Score: 2, Insightful

Firstly, "Overdesigned" may describe "Aqua" on OS X, but clumsy? You also seem to miss the fact that M$ is brilliant at getting the most money from its products, and cohesiveness in the OS doesn't help them do this. In fact, it helps if their software is as scattered and obfuscated as it can be without totally alienating "partner" hardware developers. Extending and protecting their position in the marketplace is important, which is why we will eventually see WinFS. That's what their best minds are working at, and they're succeeding.

  11. Product vs. service, support: Not a Response on Longhorn Preview · · Score: 2, Insightful

"I'm looking for a home-OS is for it to be easily compatible with my usual web/mail and games software" Over the years I've found Win 3.x-Win95,98,Me-Win2000-XP to require "upgrades" for all my usual web/mail and games software, which makes it less "easily" compatible. I would like a product that continues to provide support for my applications without requiring me to download and/or pay for upgrades. This precludes Apple, which has been even worse in the longetivity of support for its software. (How long before they drop support for PPC software on my powerbook? I'm worried!)

Plenty of sunlight comes in here in through the basement window of my Mom's house!

  13. Kombat: Work on your delivery on Sunscreen Not So Good for You? · · Score: 1

"Bottom line: Don't take one-line advice from faceless Slashbots then turn around and change your whole diet. Do your own homework."
Nobody will change their diet, and in fact, people are unlikely to change their diet even when continually urged to do so by reliable experts! At worst, someone might use /. to justify and rationalize already ingrained behaviors. Bottom line: Don't Preach! Its Condescending!

  16. P4 & G5 would be cool! on Apple Moves to All Dual-Processor Power Mac Lineup · · Score: 1

I would be really psyched to have a machine that could use both types of chips. It would certainly make OS X's transition smoother, and it would be great for embedded development for PPC. I used to have a DOS card (486) with an old 68040 and that was fun at the time (good for DOS Games that weren't ported to Mac)

  17. Corporate Espionage! Don the Tinfoil hats! on LA Times Pulls Wikitorial, Blames Slashdot · · Score: 1

I think there's a good chance that LA Times' rivals, and just people with a grudge against the LA Times read about it on Slashdot, then preceeded to do mayhem. What do you think the chances are that these weren't just vandals, but people with specific motivation to bring down the project? Maybe its paranoid, but its worth considering before they placed the blame on the general /. readership.
