I work in a school and from many years ago I remember the best (imho) moments.

    1. In a classroom with computers, 1 mouse broke, I nailed it to the wall at the head of the room to show the other mice what I would do to them if they also broke down, for the last 3 years in that classroom no mice broke.

    2. One of the administrative staff was having a problem with her computer, she called me and I came downstairs.
She showed me what she did and sure enough, the machine gave an error message.

Me: Ok, do you treat the computer nice enough?
Her (confused): What do you mean???!?
Me: Oh, just the little things, an encouraging word, a caress on its case, you know.
Her (angry): I never heard of such a thing, that thing is a machine, it doesn't have feelings!!
Me: Oh no? Let me show you (as I slowly caress its case), there there, she is not such a bad person, you can trust her, won't you work for her like you work for me hmmmm??

After that, I repeated the same actions in the software as she did 100%, but I did not get the error message.
She was REALLY confused, but saw that my method of working with computers worked better than hers and I cannot count the times I walk into an office and the problem disappears.

So you see, sometimes the stick, sometimes the carrot.

The weight of the original reinforced concrete deck and its supporting stringers was 166,397 tons (150,952,000 kg). The weight of the new orthotropic steel plate deck, its two inches of epoxy asphalt surfacing, and its supporting pedestals is now 154,093 tons (139,790,700 kg). This is a total reduction in weight of the deck of 12,300 tons (11,158,400 kg), or 1.37 tons (1133 kg) per lineal foot of deck.

    Bridge Deflection, Load Capacity

Watch this video to see how the Golden Gate Bridge can move up and down by as much as 16 feet depending on the temperature.

Maximum transverse deflection, at center span: 27.7 ft = 8.4 m

Maximum downward deflection, at center span: 10.8 ft = 3.3 m

Maximum upward deflection, at center span: 5.8 ft = 1.77 m

Live load capacity per lineal foot: 4,000 lbs. = 1,814.4 kg

As an example of how the Bridge is built to move, during the winter storms in 1982, the main span bowed approximately 6 to 7 feet

The three maximum deflections noted above at the center of the suspension bridge are due to the following loading conditions:

    1. The transverse deflection is due to a sustained transverse wind load. The maximum transverse movement of 27.7 ft is based on the maximum allowable longitudinal movement of the wind locks at the support towers;
    2. The maximum downward deflection is due to a condition with maximum live load on the center span, no live load on the side spans and maximum design temperature to elongate the main cables; and
    3. The maximum upward deflection is due to a condition opposite to condition 2 above, with maximum live load on side spans, no live load on center span and minimum design temperature to shorten the cable length.

I don't know how our dutch schools compare to high schools, but for this story, it is comparable enough.
I was in my 2nd year and for the first 6 months a group of kids kept teasing, annoying, harassing me, etc. It was horrible.

I remember being in shop class reaching out for a tool that I needed to continue my work. One of the kids grabbed it after I did and tried to pull it out of my hand, I told that person that I was using it, then the kid spit on my hand.
That was the moment something snapped in my head, everything went dark, I was smart enough to drop the tool and I said one little thing: "Run."

The kid knew I was serious and started running, as did I. I jumped over chairs and desks while in pursuit only having one goal, to destroy that person.
It took 6 people to grab me and hold me against a wall until I calmed down.
That experience made sure that they didn't bother me anymore but it scared the fuck out of me.
I have learned more patience, more forgiveness and more understanding since then since I do not want to repeat an episode like that.

You are correct when some people only understand violence, I wish that was different.
