I would advocate getting a VPS (i like slicehost) for $20 a month, where you can actually host a site, and play a bunch.
Then just build and tune your apps on your laptop and deploy to the VPS.
The downside is that the vps won't have much ram to kick around, but i am skeptical of server apps that need more than 256mb per instance to run as a dev env.
Be sure to consider that the more legal, and thereby ubiquitous, firearms are, then the easier it will be to obtain one in the black market. In places where firearms are illegal, it is much harder to obtain one even if you are a criminal. So effectively, firearms regulations do control the gun use of felons, and should not be so quickly dismissed.
By point of evidence, I point to the hilarious antics of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
At first intrigued by a somewhat interesting analogy (cyberspace, pirates, seas), it quick became apparent this author has no real understanding of how "cybercrime" is perpetrated. Seriously, how can we expect the US government to aggressively thwart botnets? The analogy basically falls flat on its face primarily because as a somewhat anonymous, automated and decentralized structure, it would be impossible to target the sources.
There is,however, an interesting analogy the author totally missed. There is a trust network already, where email that originates outside of the major webmail providers must enter a trust network. Once the email enters (gmail|yahoo|hotmail), it is afforded a certain level of trust by the others as it is coming from a source that is known to patrol its user base. Similar to this would be a bunch of ports in the high seas that level a certain amount of security...
There is an overwhelming consensus amongst real security professionals that security is achieved through openness, not obscurity and closed source. Just look at the systems that hyper secure organizations like the NSA advocate. Those who continue to rail against open source systems as being insecure because "hackers can look at the source" (yeah but they can't look at my key) seem as out of touch as creationists.
Don't forget the use of the extensive preview framework, enabling time machine to quickly render an accurate thumbnail based upon whatever is registered in preview for that file type. Even with a fast hackish solution, without a consistent, quick, and extensible thumbnail generation framework, that magic pixie-dustness of timeline becomes a boring, less than usable, badly managed repository.
i installed xp recently for some contract work and was amazed how less usable it was then the default install of xubuntu (this is without taking the blinding speed of xubuntu into account). Furthermore i got a new laptop with vista on it and it was not only infuriatingly slow, but just really hard to use.
The ony thing OSX has on xubuntu is a bit more consolidation on UI conventions. It's less stable (i use a mac at work all day, and have a mini at home), and slower.
in my mind there is no reason why windows is more intuitive than a good linux distro, aside from convention most business users are used to (but with google docs and so on,this will go by the wayside). And I would be willing to contend with a bit more consolidation and simplification in system prefs, linux distros will be as usable or more so than OSX!

is Whedon a 'socialist' or is he just not die hard free market (i.e. advocates a government with social programs and regulation)? Is he just labeling himself a socialist because it seems trendy, or are you just branding him as such because 'socialist' is a convenient slur to pigeonhole people who have stated some level of progressive beliefs.
imo, anyone who capitalizes free market (get it? haha bad pun) and swings about the label of 'socialist' and assumes that this is anything less than an ambiguous emotional judgement is immediately placed into the category 'foaming at the mouth idealogue' until they can rationalize their sweeping statements and provide some measure of intelligent discourse as to their (hopefully) coherent beliefs.
that being said, i plan to see serenity this weekend, and look forward to the attention it supposedly gives economics in a large society, and am willing to ignore that it was directed by a flaming pinko bastard.
nothing a little grinding, some plastic, and some creative use of tissue grafts can't fix.
of course, noting that it is talk-like-a-pirate-day, the recipient will probably look like some animatronic pirate. Now if only we could get the recipient to sing 'Its a small world after all'...
Sure, but in a large scale project, let alone an api, there is a vital need for the extensibility and robustness of the bloaty STI implementation.
Different tools for different jobs. I hope you aren't so naive/stubborn to think that one technique to solving a problem is ever universal... but then again this is slashdot and *I* have already wasted precious cycles responding to this..
actually, i listened to the lecture series on cds a couple years ago, and it was nothing insightful, and hardly any more 'dire' than the conclusions drawn if you read any of his more potent writings on linguistics in mass society. Moreso just a sophmoric introduction to the impact of mass media.
Besides, how does that relate to me snapping back at someone who says that yellow journalism is 'not worthy of a high school paper' when it is a regular occurence among major media outlets.
maybe you shouldn't be so quick to denounce me with a trite name-drop
for fucks sake, when will people realize that terrorism is a phenomenon that seeks out weak points in a society, and that there is No safety from it, aside from addressing the cause... i.e. injustice (mixed in with whatever malicious radical banner thats used to rally normal people into irrational violence and sacrifice).
If we clamp down and do all this 'securing' of the arteries of the global economy, all we do is hamper growth. And that means the terrorists win.. because thats their goal: to impede normal operation and force you to react to them. And look how Fucking successful they are! Want to fuck up their plans? Try treating the people from which they come nicely.
Yeah, but then the astronauts will go from a candy-laden diet to an over-priced biscotti and pastry diet, not to mention the hypertension from the caffiene.
Actually, come to think of it, their diets will come to resemble that of a software engineer (like me!), so maybe they should just use code monkeys to test out space living conditions... i mean they already have the immersive radiation soaked environment, muscle atrophy, and Vitamin D deficiency...
This just in: DARPA researches a new, improved robot that flattens and paves 'that wilderness thing' so soldiers can carry their own gear, and can't whine about it.
Really? Jeez, I mean, as soon as I turned 19 it became a bit tacky to give expensive gifts or even (shudder) money as a Christmas gift.
I can't think of a better way to show appreciation to someone than finding something ordinary that you want to share with them, like a book, a music cd (a home-made mix that you take time in preparing is even better!), a framed photograph, or an invitation to learn more about something you are really excited about, like a linux live cd.
As for me, my mother can't even figure out how to use Picasa, so I think I will just get her a book that I read earlier this year that was good.
not to mention the benefits of all wheel drive, independant traction control, and sheer torque from having four wheel based motors. The only real drawback is the maximum speed.. which is limited to the max rpms of the motor. However, nobody except racers needs to have a car that goes 150 mph.. in fact for all intents and purposes a car that can burn up a quarter mile, but maxes out at 100 is probably the perfect solution for general society.
I am just waiting for the day that i get my four wheel-motored pickup with 400+ hp.. and 35mpg.
Oooor, either buy the boxed version, or use Steam's Backup feature which allows you to backup the game to a CD/DVD
I hope all you naysayers realize that Steam is pretty much the ideal compromise between strong anti-piracy protection, and user convenience. You can install the game on as many computers as you f'n like, but just can't play online with more than one. In fact, i bet you could give your friends HL2, so that they can only play it offline.

how is reducing everything to an abstract set scale of value not cotton candy headed idealism?

"This is yellow journalism, plain and simple. Even your high school newspaper has higher standards than this."
yeah, a world reknowned news organization, like say ooooh CBS news, would never blindly accept a story...
