There is no such thing as a "gun nut", there are just nuts who also own guns.
Not so long ago there were "computer nuts", these guys built their own computers ! Why would they need one of those ?
People are (with very few exceptions) responsible for their own behavior.
With a nut and "tool/object" , it is the "nut" that makes it dangerous.
Pens, paper, books, ideas, concepts, visual basic, & perl are all dangerous in the wrong hands.
One day even atom bombs might be normal for people to own & use.
"read the book 'Across Realtime' by Vernor Vinge" A bit far fetched maybe, but think outside the box.
Everything can be used & misused.
The current "meth" problem is leading some states to control the sale of cold remedies & fertilizer because they contain certain chemicals used in "meth".
Find something that can't be misused and you will find a pretty useless object.
Seems very pragmatic... Two points of view, two pictures...
I think the concept of public photography is interesting, and even more so when you factor in the cost.
When using film, the cost is much higher and limited capacity. And the original negatives are somewhat tamper resistant. So no one would take that many pictures without good reason.
But digital is cheap enough, I can shoot 1000+ images a day. And archive them to dvd/cdroms for very little additional cost.
And with editing tools (photoshop/gimp/etc) the results are whatever you want them to be.
So almost anyone can afford to do it.
If cameras are everywhere. Ski masks, rubber Nixon masks, veils, and anything like that will become fashionable, not just paranoia unchecked.
Parents shouldn't pay the legal bills. Let them use the public defender, lose the case & bill the government. Then with manditory sentencing, we can have the prisons full of these kids.
Just think, our own home grown cyber terrorists.
Another generation lost in the battle of the brain damaged.
One of them discussed China and it's natural resource problems. Over use of the deep water table for food production, population growth, large scale construction(dams) etc...
I think there could be some valuable data collected.
But with China's past history on SARS, political dissidence, and other topics, the end result will be the same.
There is going to be a very large problem when the system breaks in China.
When the Soviet empire broke up at least everyone wasn't starving and there wasn't a China sized population.
I have always planned spending a lot more on software than hardware.
With the steep discounting of hardware, the cost savings is in software.
A $100 dollar machine will just make software vendors than do NOT reduce prices even richer.
An information appliance with reliable software that doesn't need patching every week would be the cheap option I think is likely.
Something like a Apple 2 with os & sw in a small package with an monchrome lcd, floppy, std usb keyboard, pcmia card slots, 802.11 & ethernet port.
Put the os software on rom & rom cards and data on the memory cards & floppy.
O wait this sounds like an X-BOX , never mind.
Train everyone to use & program Linux in high school, then we can all use the cheap hardware that is being surplused. Like 486's & Pentium 1,2,& 3 systems.
Am I the only one who would want a "almost" exact copy of the the Venus De Milo ?
I say almost exact, because I want the missing pieces added back in.
Which face to use would be a hard choice.
I think I would have to do a survey of the beatiful classic female faces for the correct historical ethnic/area first.
I couldn't use a favorite model/actress face.
Like a Julia Robert, Sandara Bullock, (insert the top 1000 rated women list here),etc, etc. Because, I wouldn't want my statue seized by the copyright nazi's.
How much is one I want one or at least the use of one.
Very few emails actually lead to an arrest. It's the occasional bad message (threats, smut, etc) that would be outta line anywhere.
Sending thousands of stupid product / 419 that mails filters kill is just noise.
Now consider, if you actually had to respond (or be arrested ) to all that spam email with a real name & email address because they spoofed a government email.
And the US state I live in uses some web/email DNS domains, that are NOT easily identified as such.
Everytime I hear about the politicians proposing laws for the "Internet", I think they are morons.
1) there are no borders on the internet. packets go around the world within seconds.
2) the source and destination can/are often spoofed/proxied.
3) they keep looking at ways to "tax" emails.
do politician dream of electric stamps?
4) you cannot regulate chaos, only surf the probability waves.
My concept for ending spam is.
Email readers (with many options)
- sort incoming by spam filter score into folders
- each folder has retention options
- user provides feedback to MTA on spam that clears filters.
how spammy is this message ? (1-100 scoring)
MTA stuff
- user feedback used locally only at first
- if a high spam feedback score (by site/user/content) from many users send the score to other MTA
- if sender address invalid, send error message back to all MTA listed in message & trash the message.
- if sender address does not allow replys, trash the message.
- if multiple (to/cc/bcc) email addresses all must be valid.
- list of top (100) site/users sending to invalid address made available to other MTA's
- users that make the list are throttled down
- MTA's that do NOT throttle bad users and/or provide the list are throttled by other MTA's
All the lawyers (and pseudo lawyers) will stir the problem(?) around. Then take all the money they can. Appeal (do it again). Repeat until both parties have no $$$ Then leave.
I must confess, I did (about) the same.
Except I hung the wind chimes (undamaged) on their doorknob.
They were the neighbors in a condo development in California.
I didn't think the wind was that constant in the area,
untill the wind chimes we hung.
I lasted about 3 nights of the chimes.
We all had a good chuckle over it, over a cool one.
It doesn't take much to disrupt a balanced system.
The water doesn't go away, just changes the location.
Remember, the Sahara desert wasn't always a desert.
And do a little research on the gulf stream, it is having problems.
Lower water temp is changing the effect that Europe is getting now.
If there isn't anything we can do.
Then we can stop expecting the easy life style in many countries.
Deforestation, pollution, over population, plague, famine, drought.
How many horsemen are there?

Privacy in public, what a concept...
I want royalties on my image, personal DRM !
Tag did I make it.
I hate the required regisration system on any web site for "free" access.
So "micro" evolution is not enough to prove macro evolution.
It sounds like at least the first step in a proof.
But any discussion that requires "faith" belong in the realm of philosophy not science.
Language word games are for arguing about nothing. (see lawyer joke threads)
Science comes closer to math.
I don't think that is restricted to Florida.
All states get Federal money for the first year of all child abuse cases.
If they have enough cases.
Q: How long do you think it takes to settle "any" child abuse case?
A: One year minimum...
Parents shouldn't pay the legal bills.

Postal Employee leaks/Security breach at Malibu Post Office.
Nick Noolte drunk again.
Look a the fashions the stars wear every day
Who's that standing in line with J.Lo ?
Star seeking attention flashs Post office.
What about all of us old people (21+) that want content more adult.
I enjoyed GTA vice city, Postal 2, Quake and would not call them G rated.
I want them labeled for content, with good install/de-install programs.
And if you really insist a password/age checker.

Winston Smith lives !!!
I vote for an assisted "roll your own cd distro"
pick the packages by group/subgroup/individually and create install/hw detection scripts and roll an iso image.
There is NO value add to most distrobutions.
Just additional install voodoo scripts.
I believe RMS does get it !
Share your efforts or be waiting for M$$$$soft to fix your problems with another new o.s. release.
(and you can buy all new application too...)
If you can NOT show your source code and share, shame on you.
Software patents are a crime.
And software free or non-free is no substitute for good management.
It is just a tool.....
