and another that would let other devices play iTunes songs.
If they release it they should be in Jail by the end of the week. iTunes songs as digital files are only liscenced for "authorized devices" enabling any other device would be a blatant DMCA violation. It would be akin to selling a pice of software to enable you to install licensed one copy of windows on hundreds machines.
Call up novell and buy Unix and open source it all. beyond that standardized k-12 textbooks with interactive test databases so teachers can make custom exams. and make the whole thing available as a turnkey server schools could just plug-into their network and supply copies on DVD or BlueRay that would hold every single text. Imagine little Jimmy being issued a laptop containing every textbook he will every use. Hey we might even save enough money to hire more than one teacher for every 50 students
Privacy concerns aside (just a matter of implementation) this is a great idea because it does the one obvious thing we keep missing. It punishes the drunks by taking away the booze!!!!!! There would be far less drunk driving in this country if instead of taking a persons license when thier caught, we take away there ability to buy alcohol. Lets face it you take away a drunks license and he goes to the bar to drink away his troubles and afterwards doesn't really care that he doesn't have a license and hops in his car.
we should be required to show id everytime we buy alcohol. get caught drunk driving or any other drinking related offence your ID gets stamped NO ALCOHOL and your barred from even entering a bar. sure some would get around it (we've all seen enough drunks driving there bikes or lawn mowers to the bar to realize they'll do about anything) but even if we only cut off half the problem drunks we'll save a lot of lifes. And it need not be any more intrusive then when you were in your twentys and had to show ID anyway.
Problem is its not a violation as long as its not used to play ITMS tracks on a unauthorized device (Zune,Zen, etc) or to play others DRM'd files on iTunes/iPod (would require accessing to account key which would be a DMCA violation) So as long as you want to open up a store to sell FairPlay DRM'd files that cant be played on an iPod your OK.
Well this whole concept is useless who could he license this too?
content sellers - yeah we'll just start up a company to compete with the ITMS selling the exact same thing they do...NOT
content owners - a lot easier and cheaper just to let ITMS sell your stuff for you
hardware vendor - no good, making your device play ITMS files is a 100% DCMA / copyright violation...doesnt matter if you can make it play on your device, its not liscenced for your device
basiclly he created his own version of fairplay which can not legally interoperate with Apple's so it could only be used to create a smaller, less capable, DRM ecosystem
Yeah Right Wal-Mart is not paying more than 12.99 for those DVDs...actually in the quanities their buying (full pallet per store) I would guess the cost to be less then $10.00.
Talk about overblown. This is basicly a minor accounting issue. No laws were broken it just wasn't written up right. At worst the restatements would change things by a couple of million total.
were talking about the difference between a stock grant at $35 a share instead of $30. and Apples not a big option company like microsoft. Infact this will acually make Apple money. The restated earnings will reduce there taxes making 30% of the restatement show up as extra cash.
This is basiclly a case of "oops we paid our executives 12 million dollars not 10...our bad"
To paraphrase and old Judge Dredd story. "Guy calls the police to report someone iimpersonating a cop at his front door trying to get in. Cops arrive and arrest the fake. Cops ask the guy how he knew it wasn't a real cop...Guy says if he was a real cop he would have just busted the door down."
From my reading of the law in question there is no way he should be charged with a felony as the law states it is only a misdemeanor if you are one of the parties in the recording.
About a year ago a client brought me a computer to disinfect. With it he brought a Geek Squad disk that was left in the machine by Best Buy. The contents...Pirated copies of Partion Magic, NAV etc. Yes I am sure they were pirated they still contained the original pirates read me's with instructions on bypassing registration and lists of serial numbers.
Anyone wondering if the disappointment in this announcement is just what Steve wanted. The hype has gotten so big around Steve's announcements latley the only way he could suprise anyone is to announce a new product by showing up unannounced at a random apple store and giving them away. Reducing the expectations would make easier to Steve to wow everyone with the unexpected.
We have no ideal what this could do.
This is not like a windmill which pull energy from surface winds. This is akin to a 10,000 foot high windmill placed directly in the jet stream. This is also not like tidal or wave generators for the same reasons those devices capture energy that would have been expended by waves crashing on shore and slowly eroding beaches. This device will pull energy from currents that effect weather and climate world wide. If it were just to shift the current a few miles on the east coast it could shift the currents hundreds of miles in the north sea dramiticly changing regional climates.
Also note that even the biggest aircraft carriers have no effect on these currents as the ships sit less then 10 meters below the water.
While 30 GB is a thimble for the Slashdot crowd. I've worked with a lot of lowend users (grandma's , email only) who only use 5-10 GB. A solid state drive would be perfect for them...smaller,less power, more durable (at least mechanically). Those who don't store any multimedia (MP3s, Movies,Photos) wont ever use more than about 5GB (3 for OS,1 for apps and a gig left for a whole ton of recipes and emails).
I on the otherhand have two full 200GB drives and need to add more.
Usenet is the last true piece of the original Internet. Im glad ISP's are dropping it because it keeps it away from the mainstream and the distortion, commercialization and sanitizing that brings. I like it the way it is; dirty, geeky, slightly flawed, a little dangerous and below the mainstream radar.
Exactly how is the unauthorized use of copyrighted materials not a copyright violation...its pretty much the definition.
If they release it they should be in Jail by the end of the week. iTunes songs as digital files are only liscenced for "authorized devices" enabling any other device would be a blatant DMCA violation. problem is iTunes files are specifically liscenced for use on computers and iPods, playing them on anything else is a copyright violation.

now all they need to do is create something to supply the 900KW it would take to charge it.

Hey I have servers that weigh more than that.

same thing happened to me when I registered an "address"@XXXX.com address. all sorts of generic mail.
Time you spend online playing WoW = Money for WoW's makers

actually it was built by Apple and marketed by Bell and Howell as a way to sneek them into schools as AV equipment.
Wouldn't this make it illegal to show "the Passion" to a minor?
