I am not too much a fan of Spielberg's movies (besides maybe the oldies ; Jaws, ET , Indiana Jones) but saying that his plots are generic , doesn't give credit where credit belongs.
Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List ; maybe even Minority Report ; leave food for thought ; while the movies you speak of, are forgotten once you exit the cinema.
The PS3 will be using Blu Ray technology (as seen in this previous/. article, located at : http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/05/ 1554219&tid=212)
I see what you are saying ; but doesn't the point i raise also make sense : I have alot of friends who eventually bought Q3 (vanilla Quake 3 not being their kind of game) after I told them there are alot of mods around that change the gameplay ; and maybe change it in a game they like.
And since you agree on that they want people to buy the games : This is exactly what would happen.
Keep in mind, to play a 'mod' : you -have- to own the original game (if you want to play online.. yadda yadda)
"It's what the game console's *case*, a bit of molded plastic, might be made to look like. To be blunt, why does this matter?"
Maybe because that was one of the 'biggest' (gotta love the pun) problems with the first X-box ? It was considered -way- too big.
I agree that at the current stage of development, the case is most likely (maybe even more so now) to be changed ; The new Gameboy DS also did a very quick overhaul in a few months ; and most of the changes put through there were based on the comments they got on the various trade shows.
The new logo (if it -is- the new logo) looks quite cool ; If this a hoax, still some pretty clever design of the logo there.
I don't like the current logo too much ; it doesn't really 'evoke an emotion' with me [/hippy shit]
I hope they will make it possible for custom content (like amateur mods) to be imported, and played on the Xbox 2 : I am sure that the demand to mod games like it is happening on PC's atm, will only increase in the future ; ifnot also raise gamesales, if customers know there is more content once the game is released.
One free chance to be innovative for once for MS;)
then again, IIRC, they weren't going for a harddisk in there this time around (don't know for sure if this still stands) ; and this would make custom content (defenitely at the sizes mods come these days) nearly impossible.
As much can be achieved by photographing/filming them :
You could also replace the 'protestors' with 'criminals' and your point makes alot less sense.
I think placing cameras , if properly used by lawenforcements / third parties, can only contribute to cleaning up some foul areas (as seen from first hand experience , in a bad neighbourhood in Rotterdam, the Netherlands) and might come in handy when they are in fact used for 'inspecting the area/accident' in case of an emergency.
I'm all for privacy ; but it is, and will be , a -public- place : Then again, i think drastic measures like this, should only be done after the city has made a vote for it in a 'referendum' (i am not sure if this is an english word) ; more or less a poll amongst the citizens of the city.
Thanks for the clarification there : Don't know when that 'data polution' crept into my brains : Always have been thinking that Thief was based on the Quake 2 engine :
Thanks for brushing that one up;)
Their engines have served as a -very- good base for other, excellent games.
Thief, Half-life, Hexen, Soldier of Fortune come to mind ; as well as many games i might have forgotten.... And don't forget about the modifications either.
I think id software proved themselves to make great engines, and other studios take on the task to make even better games with it.
I have been thinking about this (no, i have not send them snail mail) : But i was , to call it the least, astonished, that nowadays, with copyright infringements beings slapped on anyone that -might- not have an original work ; emailing to several departments (from legal to customer-service/information) results in no reply at all.
The people dumb enough not to think for themselves and thus refer to empty sources, like the quickly de-bunked Slate commentary (found at http://slate.msn.com/id/2102723).
As a non-American, I hope Michael Moore will be able to let it be on telly, preferably on the night before the elections... Let the landslide begin !
This was a Fan project ; they loved the game, think it would even rock more in 3D : And went along and (almost) did it.
Maybe this project has shown them that they -do- have the capabilities to create alot of assets, and they might want to go on ; in the direction you say.
Respect, on my side, is not lost ; Just because they used a world/story/game , and ported it to their vision :
In that mindset ; -every- sequel of -every- game, would not get as much respect as the 'first' ; and that is not the case (taking Super Mario Bros. as an example)
I wonder if the team asked for permission beforehand ; Most likely not.
Still, a shame that such a project (which seemed to be making quite some progress) gets shut down : Hell, they are not doing it for the profit ; but purely because of being a fan of the (imo fantastic) Chrono Trigger.
On the topic of asking permission ;
About a year ago, I have started porting a semi-2d port of a classis arcade game (Elevator Action) to the HL2 engine.
Knowing that 'getting foxed' is something quite possible these days, I thought beforehand to ask Namco for some sort of permission... and to this day, have not received -any- replies from Namco :
I am not saying that Namco and their lawyers should be replying to me within a week ; but at least (after sending about 7 e-mails to different adresses) they should let me hear -something- : I almost am sure I -would- hear something (maybe within that one week timespan) if I would go along in making it, and calling it 'Elevator Action'
For now, I am continuing on the development of it ; and am considering to just name it something completely different (no 'elevator' or 'action' in the title) : just in case ; but keeping the exact same gameplay... I might even call the dude Otto;)

"no multiplayer support - i recall the rockstar developers specifically saying that they could not get it working from a technical perspective.."
I don't buy this statement though ; I'm quite sure that the next installment (after GTA:SA) in the GTA series is gonna have some focus on MP too ; MultiTheftAuto is just -way- too much fun ; defenitely if some of the glitches (that come with 'hacking' the game) would be gone.

Browsing games on Gamespy 'for free' ; That is, if you can endure the 10 second banners that you HAVE to watch every X minutes on Gamespy.
On your point of ASE not being free : it -is- , you are never forced to buy the software, but it sometimes gives you slack about 'not having enough resources' which most of the time is quickly fixed by refreshing the gamelist again.

I think a story of a cop losing his whole family (including a baby) was quite provoking;
Don't tell me you at least felt a bit awkward (read ; emotional) when Max re-enters his house in his dreams (iirc, the first time he enters his 'dream world') ;
Thinking of that baby crying, still gives me goosebumps:)

A shame half of it is lost (imo) , by posting it as an AC.
How about hiring Charles Bronson ? If I recall correctly, in Dead Wish V it didn't take too much for him to 'flip' and 'kill the punks' ;)
Maybe because that was one of the 'biggest' (gotta love the pun) problems with the first X-box ? It was considered -way- too big.

I might be simple though...

I got that with my Nvidia GForce 4 MX card...
I am still waiting for my 'puter to blow up one day.
