Yes. this was what first came to mind here ; somehow got modded Troll for it though (on the other hand, it proves there is -some- diversity on Slashdot, and they are not all praising Apple ;) )

But this seems solely to be a competitor, only to drive another one out of business / harm their business ; instead of going for a profit themselves.

But as you said, maybe in the long term, there is profit to be made.

Since Apple is getting profit from their Itunes solely from the sale of their Ipods (afaik) , how would MS make profit from this ? (besides f*cking Apple up the ass, if this would be able to take away customers from them)

    Anyone ?

I'm not saying that a piece of art like the Nachtwacht is on the same levels as Southpark ; but merely the uses and effects of different forms of art , made knowingly , -or- unknowingly so by the creators.

But, as i said ; instead of them whipping in 'team deathdmeatch' 'deatchmatch' *insert any other dead dumb gametype* as the halflife 2 multiplayer component, they wanted to see how easy it would be to port over old mods of HL to the current engine.

Since they own CS at the moment, and it's the most popular online fps game, that choice was easy.
As noted by VALVe, it wasn't too hard too get most of it ported and graphically updated : And tbh, when i look at the new CS:S shots/footage, i can't say it would have been too hard.
Also a bonus, and part of their 'project', is that presumably everyone buying HL2, will also get the HL1 : Source content with it.

I hope they focus some more on a cheat-free environement though :/ CS has been unplayable on public servers for the last two years.

Overtime, the gamedevelopers are able to build up a solid library of assets, once a the new technology gets adapted (for instance, the incorporating of bumpmapping/normalmapping in about every new game getting on the market right now).

IIRC, id software has allready build themselves a nice library of assets with Doom3 ; I read in some interview that they wanted to keep in mind that the assets they made for D3, could also be used in their next (unnanounced) title ; thus sparing them alot of time re-building a whole new library.

The way they have made the in-game textures (by creating objects in 3dsmax/lightwave ; and taking the texture-information [eg. color, heightmaps] from those models) is a new way of creating texture assets, which are easily to be modified when needed in the future in another format/structure.
